I need to clean the Super Secret Lair of Ultimate Doom pretty badly. I've got a pile of boxes in one corner that I saved for shipping things, but I've not felt well enough to do any of my Happytime Surprise Mail packages in forever. I've also not really done too many internet auctions or trading lately, so there's really no need for them all. Now that there's that big ol' pile, it's like "dude, that is way too much to deal with right now" and I take a nap instead. I think that's called "procrastination" and I've been doing it for at least a month. Eventually I'll clear it out, though. Then I'll need one of the exact size I threw out. That's just how those things go. :-/

My neighbors that moved in last summer are really bugging me this summer.
My dog Jack is antisocial and very protective of me and our property. I have "Beware of Dog" signs on my front door and on the gate to my back yard. Jack had an abusive history before he moved in with me 10 years ago.
I have tried everything to socialize him and have succeeded somewhat when he is off our property but you still can't touch me. He hasn't bitten anyone in 10 years , but I still worry.
When these people moved in with their children I warned them about Jack and told them not to let the kids try to pet him thru the fence and just ignore him if he barks.
If they have company or a picnic I make sure Jack is in the house, I don't mind that. If the kids are outside I make sure to go outside with Jack  in order to minimize the barking.
The backyards in our neighborhood are pretty big and my yard is fenced in.
My neighbors put up a swingset and sandbox in their yard 2ft from my fence, their yard is 90ft wide. Why would you put the toddler 2ft from the dog? They also put up a basketball hoop where any missed rebound balls are going to end up in my fenced in yard. Are these people hoping to eliminate their kids and have me get the blame for it?

Well, I should open up RWDA's Little Shop of "I Told You So". It's like a psychic, but strictly common sense delivered with a bit of snark. You are obligated to leave a post dated check for double the initial amount when you leave, so when I am proven absolutely correct I can write "I Told You So" on the back, sign it and cash it. You're welcome.

Anyway, we've had two mountain lion sightings out here in the past two days, because DUH, we're in a drought and of course they're coming down to where there are things like swimming pools and rivers and stuff. I totally called it months ago, because it's happened before. For some odd reason I'm the only one who remembers this stuff (though I'll forget what I walked into the garage for to bring into the house, but everyone with a garage does that, right?). My mom is scared now because she thinks she's going to look in our back yard and see a mountain lion going after one of our wayward kittehs. We've actually had sightings all around us since April that I know of, she is just hearing of the latest one, though.

There's nothing I can do about Hisss! because that sucker is wilder than the mountain lion probably is - the big cat would probably run if it saw me and go find its own food, Hisss! acts like s/he will eat my face off if I don't hurry up with the kibble. Lord Earl the Grey I could just grab and throw in the bathroom for a few days if there was a mountain lion too terribly close to my house. I don't know really what else to do though. Well, other than tell my mom to chill the fark out. I dunno what else to do. I don't think they make mountain lion repellent I can load the Super Soaker up with and then spray every cat in the neighborhood. I think it's best to just keep the back yard well lit and hope any thirsty mountain lion visiting the 'burbs finds the neighbors with the pool instead of us.

Here, have a cat. I gotta go fix a dinner or something.

ugh. It is like going to the pool or the beach..there can be acres of space, but some idjit has to park them selves 6 inches from your chair/ blankey...i think you need to remind them that if their kids try to pet the dog between the fence they are taking a big risk..maybe you could suggest they install some very fine mesh on their side that will exclude prying fingers...

That is exactly what they are! I am right in the middle of their territory, just south of San Antonio.
I came in form mowing to let the machine cool down a bit before I re fuel and finish up. We have been getting enough rain to make the weeds grow and I want to reclaim more of the ground around the base of the bigger trees. I hope the burn ban is off because I have a lot of branches and brush to take care of.

img.fark.netSuper long saga, feel free to skip as it's pet related but no cats involved.

shiat got real last Sunday night.  About 7:30pm I was upstairs changing into pajamas when I hear my husband yell, "Oh my God! The birds got outside!". i look out the window to see Jo sailing over the patio home next door. I ran downstairs & out the door to find Hank sitting on the ground. I scoop him up, throw him in a cage & go back out to find Super Panicked Man & try to figure out what the hell happened. Apparently he forgot that he had a bird on each shoulder when he decided to go out & check if the grill was cool enough to put away.  Jo apparently caught a bit of an updraft when she freaked out from going through the front door.

Now we're both trying to figure out if Jo is in the tree that my husband thinks she went into. Did I mention that he tends to panic?  After about an hour &' a half, we still can't see her in the super fleshed out Maple tree and we haven't heard a sound from her. Now, both birds have their wings clipped, so they can't fly but the can sort of glide so they don't drop like a stone but they can't really propel themselves upwards either. At this point, our neighbors know to keep an eye out for her so I put her cage out front with the hope that when she wants to go to bed she'll return to her 'house'.

After we go inside for a few minutes Jo starts yelling for us because she can't see us anymore. I go outside, husband is in the bathroom at this point, & I can see her about 15' up at the outside edge of the Maple tree.  I yell for my husband to get a ladder.  Now it's about 9pm & I'm barefoot, in boxer shorts & a tanktop & I'm about to try to climb a tree for the first time in 25 years.   I can get almost to the branch she's on, but I can't quite reach it to shake her out of it.   one of our neighbors loans us a fishing net, but I still can't reach her.   Now I'm out of ideas & I'm figuring that I'm going to wind up sleeping under the tree tonight. My husband decides that he's going to call dispatch and see if he can get the local fire volunteers to come out with an extension ladder. I work for a fire dept, so I'm not optimistic about this plan, and I know that once this goes out on the radio I'm never going to hear the end of this.

Dispatch pages put the call to the local Chief, who agrees to cone out & see what the deal is.  How often do you get a call for a bird stuck in a tree?  Curiosity got him to come out. A few of the guys show up  & they decide that an extension ladder isn't going to work based on where she is in the tree. Now it's about 10pm at this point. They decide to bring in their quint with the arial & use the platform to get under her & get her.  They raise the guy up and, of course, as soon as he reaches for Jo she just scoots down the branch out of his reach.  After 2 more grabs, he just shakes her out of the tree.  As she can't fly,  she starts flapping wildly while falling (proving that we aren't lying, she really can't fly). I was able to catch her in the fishing net & throw her in the cage. Of course the guys take some pictures with her because they need some photographic evidence that they got called out to get a bird out of a tree.

I still haven't decided what to press for, but there's no doubt that my husband owes me big for this one.

Good thing you don't work in retail. I get that EVERY day! I just have to shake my head, and say WTF??

gremlin1: My neighbors that moved in last summer are really bugging me this summer.

Tie a sign to the top of the fence, that will hang down to kid-eye height on their side that says all the parts you want to keep, keep on your side of the fence.  tie another one at parent-eye height that says I'm keeping everything that lands on my side of the fence, including fingers...
