When I read the headline I thought to myself "there's no way Anthony Weiner would support Cochran, and I didn't know he had a history of substance abuse." Now it makes more sense.

2. How is Thad Cochran not already a gay porn actor's name?

How would spelling "Thad" with  "k" make it sound more gay than it already does?

This is exactly what I thought when I heard Farve was stumping for Cochran.  However, in MS, those things are features not bugs.  Kinda like being "indecent with farm animals."  They just kinda wink and nod.

You know, McDaniel's nasty business with regard to Mrs. Cochran makes me want Cochran to win.

Combined with the fact that the Chamber of Commerce is rooting for him, it makes me wish both candidates could be fed into a woodchipper.

They'd do more good for their constituents as mulch.

I hope they get him cleaned and sobered up in time for the warp test.

It'd be less messy to just let them secede again.

If you think this has fail written all over it, you clearly don't have a clue about the gullibility of: Cochran's constituent base, the absolute awe and adoration of Mississippians for Favre, and the undercurrent of hope that Favre will email pictures of his junk to all registered Republicans.

He's trying hard because he knows Republicans are giving up on him. He messed up by publicly getting support from Bloomberg. He's hoping to get a lot of Democrats to turn out for him so he can win the primary as well.

What is it with football players stumping for conservatives? First we get Terry Bradshaw's take on Benghazi, now this. Is it a head trauma thing?

Hopefully the Dems are smarter than that. Why would they vote him when the other guys makes them look so much better? They should go out and vote for McDaniel.

Favre is popular in MS. Bringing him in to stump for Cochran is a decent idea... for February, back when ACTUALLY FARKING CAMPAIGNING COULD HAVE DONE SOME GOOD.

The subtext to McDaniel's campaign at this point is basically, "Listen, remember how those guys broke into his wife's nursing home to try to get embarrassing video of her suffering from Alzheimer's? I'm not saying I ordered it, but for all Thad Cochran knows I did... and ol' Grandpa Thad's still too snoozy to do anything about it. Thad Cochran: a pussy who won't even stand up for his wife when I do incredibly shiatty things to her... allegedly."

I don't know why it bothers me, since I don't want either of them to win, but it's just embarrassing to watch. It shouldn't be possible to make me feel bad for Thad Cochran, but here we are.

Probably. The only openly liberal NFL player I can think of is Chris Kluwe (sp?)...and he was a punter, the guy who gets hit on the head least frequently. Also, one of the symptoms of CTE is behaving like a selfish asshole, which conveniently is also a symptom of being a republican.

It explains a lot.

Yep. Major league football is the epitome of right-wing conservative corporatism to the tune of millions of dollars, complete with big honkin' truck ads and Bill O'Reilly interviewing Obama. It's almost embarrassing in a supposedly enlightened age like the 21st Century.

Normally I'd agree. There is a reasonable case to be made that it doesn't apply for  these Democratic voters in  this state, though. MS sucks harder at the federal teat than almost anyone else, and the case McDaniel is making against Cochran is that he must have been sucking every Democrat's cock in Washington to make that happen (and besides, we don't need no gummint money, etc.)

McDaniel is basically saying to his potential voters, yeah, you might feel a bit of a pinch, but those Negroes in the Delta rely even more on Uncle Sam, and they're gonna take it so hard up the ass they'll think it's 1814, not 2014. That's why Cochran's very hesitant courting of black Democratic crossover votes is such a story here. It's not a terrible strategy on paper, but it's practically unthinkable in practice.

Cochran isn't doing anything because there is nothing he can do. Cochran's whole spiel is that he's the good ole boy who will bring home the bacon--it's not that he is a member of the cast of Duck Dynasty. If he takes the gloves off and starts hitting MCDaniel's that rips off his gentlemanly facade. Worse, it would show that McDaniel has the ability to successfully "punch up". So he has to stay the course and ride above the tumult.

As for Farve, this can backfire on him. On one hand Farve is popular but he is also to a large degree an outsider. People may resent his intrusion.

Is it too late to get on the ballot? Sounds like you could win on the "I'm not either of them" platform.

It could also simply be a matter of where they were raised. Bradshaw's a Louisianan and Favre's a Mississippian, both located in the conservative Southeast, whereas Kluwe comes from the liberal stronghold of California. Just another possible reason for the divergence.

Not being either of them is a pretty low bar to clear. Even the "Democrat" in the race, Travis Childers, who's only okay with an abortion if it's committed with a handgun, manages to not be Cochran or McDaniel.

Still, it's good to know I can count on your vote, Citizen.

Farve went to Southern Miss...and no Ole Miss or Miss State alum/booster gives a care about Farve. It doesn't play well north of Hattiesburg

One of my good friends has an interesting take on the NFL.  Amongst the owners it's practically communist - all of the owners share all of the revenue generated by the league.  But for the coaches and players it's a fascist organization - although they are well-paid (for the most part), the players have limited personal freedom and even have to obey a certain dress code to the letter or else they get fined.  The players must conform absolutely or they're out of the league.  It takes a certain mindset to buy into that kind of organization as a player and it fits nicely in line with the current Republican mindset.
