$1 million going into his pockets for doing literally nothing.

And this is why we have so many millionaires and disparity in wealth. You have money that can be created out of thin air with a few keystrokes and given to someone and if it doesn't work out , then someone gets rich and those investing just write it off.

That's totally stupid. Now if they made an app that only sent "Hodor," that would be awesome.

This is backwards, though. There aren't any students /clamoring/ to take Film Appreciation, it happens because they don't have a farking choice, to get their ticket to a career they have to pay for a bunch of shiatty time-wasting courses. Anybody who thinks that people who don't want to be taking English Lit will profit from taking English Lit and should be made to take English Lit if they want to make something better than minimum wage can go fark themselves.

I don't get it.  Isn't that a text?  Why the fark do I need this?  Are the 3 extra buttons I have to push really worth it compared to an app that, I assume, only works if we both have it?

Creator Or Arbel told the Financial Times: "It's not just an app that says Yo, it's a whole new means of communication."

No, it really is just an app that says Yo, but in "a few taps" instead of.. um... a few taps required to send a text.

"With Yo you can send a friend an acknowledgement in a hurry with just a couple of taps on your phone, less time than it would take to send a text. "

Excuse me while I go develop an app that lets you send only the word "buttsects?"

FTFA:   With Yo you can send a friend an acknowledgement in a hurry with just a couple of taps on your phone, less time than it would take to send a text.

The old way: Text comes in, tap on it, swipe a reply, press send.
The new way: Text comes in, drop from your messaging app to your home screen, tap on Yo, find your contact, send an ambiguous Yo, go back to your messaging app, wait for response from contact who will ask what you mean by "Yo", reply as a text, press send.

Yeah... seems much faster.

FTFA:   It's unclear how many of these signups were simply for the sake of being ironic.

I think it is safe to say the percentage is near 100%.

Oh, I don't know, a fair number might have been people who thought it sounded like a good idea because they didn't think about it in the slightest, then tried it, realized what a dry turd it is, and now, realizing how empty their lives are, will dedicate themselves to a life of public service.

All because of 'Yo' app.  'Yo' App, making the world a better place, for the children.

they buried the lead. the paragraph at the end highlights why there's funding & it could have a future.

if you add WORLDCUP to your contacts list, you get a "yo" every time a goal is scored.

This isn't an app to send your friend a pointless message, it's a broadcast alert system.

marketers will use this as a passive push notification w/o making you download their app, just add them on yo.
the contact name will become the message. the yo is just the alert.

OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE says "yo" - oh look honey, our table is ready, lets get our drinks & head to the hostess
BELLAGIO POKER ROOM says "yo" - great, a seat opened up, I can leave the black jack table now.

the # of yo's broadcast could become a stat that helps measure popularity of a product or place & how willing people are to seek it out.
Just allow subscribers access to each other's info & all the sudden these places have automatic demo info on anybody that made use of their notification system.

Outback knows from how far people come to visit thier restaurant & it can inform their marketing initiatives.

in the end, this will be a marketing tool if it's anything.

Ed's Wood: in the end, this will be a marketing tool if it's anything.

But, even as a Marketing tool, it's not good. It leaves something to be desired, anyway.

SMS gives you 160 characters to play around with. Twitter gives you 140. With either of those, I can also send my customers a link to, say, a coupon.

Hell, I signed up for something with Outback a couple years ago, and I get a reminder every time their NASCAR driver finishes in the top 10, telling me I can get a free Bloomin' Onion the next day. That's a solid marketing tool, because it can push traffic. If I just got a "Yo" from them, I wouldn't bother to check and see what it was about, but with an email, I'll at least read the subject.

Which was probably the real purpose in the first place. Fund with $1M, get a little more virality by sounding like the most dumbassed waste of capital imaginable, and probably the worst that happens is you get most of it back when you shut down via acquihire next year. Get two marketroids fighting over you and you might even get $2M for it, which would be an adequate return.

Fair point.
I never said it looked like a  goodmarketing tool, just that it's real potential use is buried when you highlight the peer-to-peer aspect.
You're right it wouldn't work in the manner you described. I'm thinking it would work much better onsite in the manner I described.

Restaurants that have those heavy buzzers can do away w/ them. Casinos can let you roam free while you wait on a seat to open up.  This can apply to literally everything w/ waiting lists, inconvenient notifications or terrible impossible-to-understand PA systems.

No idea how you'd monetize it but frankly I thought twitter was a ridiculous, impossible to monetize dumb product but hear we are.
I'm guessing the pitch that we'll never hear that garnered $1,000,000 in funding revolved around the aspects I'm driving at much more than what the focus of the article made it appear to be.

Outback will incentivize you to use this instead w/ some dumb thing like a free app.
then they'll make that money back many times over w/ the built in analytics in the Yo dashboard they payed for that's only available in the premium level.
(totally making this up as I go along, but it's a theoretical possibility)
