Send in Cheney, Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz. They'll get this mess straightened out in six days, maybe six weeks. I doubt it would take six months.

And make sure to give them a couple of billions in "walking around money" that will go unaccounted for.  They'll need some funds to bribe ISIS to be nice.

Who knows, but I am totally in favor of the idea of sending them and leaving them there until they have the whole 1400 year old shiite-Sunni tiff all sorted out.

Remember those discussions we had about breaking the country up into three separate regions - Shia, Sunni and Kurd?

I wish we had listened more to those people.

I think Bremer, Feith and Addington should go too, just to ensure that the mission is accomplished, you know. And we can start a PR campaign among Iraqis to announce their arrival, and they can be greeted as liberators.

I've seen this one before. Cheney shoots Wolfowitz in the face, Rummy cries and breaks down, resulting in his being captured and tortured for information by the rebels. Cheney moves into Saddam's old palace and sets himself up as the Dark Emperor whose reign shall last ten thousand years and begins drinking the blood of infants.

Yeah, I'm not sure how cleanly drawing the lines inside the boundaries of just one of those countries would have helped in the long run.  Short of building a wall around the entire damned country to keep them isolated.

It's a nice idea in theory.  But some of the rivalries and violence there are rooted even more deeply than the Sunni/Shia divide.  These are nearly ancient tribal and ethnic rivalries, too.  And they are not neatly confined by arbitrary geographical lines.

As long as the arguments people make in favor are about who "the bad guys" are, it's a bad idea for a war.  That still really just means you don't have a real objective.

If al maliki is "the bad guy" then you don't really have an objective for what helps the country.  If ISIS are "the bad guys" you also have no objective.

It's where Bush messed up, in aught-3.  I will only listen to anyone who presents objective achievable goals with regard to military involvement.  No one else deserves the chance to even present a case.

Honestly, considering Dick and Liz are making the rounds on the shows saying we can't allow Iran to assist in this matter because Iran is the biggest terrorist group of them all, I would be completely unsurprised if the eventual solution they would seek if in power was to back Sunni extremist groups like ISIS in exchange for them taking their fight in Iran in the short term, with a little dash of "we believe the Ayatollah has ties to al Qaeda; ISIS has some disreputable elements, but that's all in the past and they're nothing like the people who really intend to do us harm" on top for maximum effect. Because paying people we hate to kill each other has always worked out for the best before for us.

This didn't get out of committee, but it seems like a good start:

War Profiteering Prevention Act of 2007 - Amends the federal criminal code to impose a fine and/or prison term of up to 20 years for profiteering and fraud involving a contract or the provision of goods or services in connection with a war, military action, or relief or reconstruction activities within U.S. jurisdiction.
Prohibits:
(1) executing or attempting to execute a scheme or artifice to defraud the United States; and
(2) materially overvaluing any good or service with the specific intent to defraud and excessively profit from the war, military action, or relief or reconstruction activities.
Imposes a fine or prison term of up to 10 years for: (1) falsifying, concealing, or covering up by any trick, scheme, or device a material fact; (2) making any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statements; or (3) making or using any materially false writing or document knowing the same to be false, fictitious or fraudulent.
Establishes the fine provided by this Act as the greater of $1 million or twice the gross profits or other proceeds derived by a person convicted of an offense under this Act.
Expands venue rules for the prosecution of offenses under this Act.
Grants extraterritorial federal jurisdiction over offenses under this Act.
Subjects any property which constitutes or is derived from proceeds traceable to a violation of this Act to civil and criminal forfeiture.
Makes the war profiteering and fraud offenses set forth by this Act predicate crimes for racketeering and money laundering offenses.
