I think they deserve harsher punishment.

Judges can make you post an apology on facebook?  Why not make them confess their crime on 4chan with their home address and personal phone number?  That would be fitting, and a complete nightmare.

Wow.  I guess the Marine Mammal Protection Act is all bark and no bite.

LeroyBourne: Judges can make you post an apology on facebook?

They can make it part of your probation. They can't make you do most of the odd things you hear about, but they can make it the only alternative to jail time.

Noticeably F.A.T.: LeroyBourne: Judges can make you post an apology on facebook?

I guess if I hear 'alternative to jail time' I'll do what ever that is.

They mistook the manatee for their girlfriends.

Said Taylor Martin, "We've been taught our lesson and the whole world has been taught a lesson. No one will ever do this again.

I'm the last splash.

But the whole world should learn this lesson from us. No one should do this again.

I know you, little Libertine
I know you're a cannonball

But don't do it kids. Don't end up making sorry sorry on Facebook like us."

F*ck those young sociopaths! Manatee are loving, peaceful creatures and harm no one. Florida, being the republican backwater place that it is gives them no protection and has tried to take them off the endangered species list.

Don't feel like looking it up...  What was that woman who rode piggyback on a manatee given?

Manatee-herpes.

So did sailors, they called them mermaids. Wonder if they cannonballed or just balled.

Hopefully they'll cannonball into the mouth of a hungry crocodile or a pond full of piranhas.

Opinions about her will vary, but Jenna Marbles cracked me up when she referred to Manatees as "sea shiats."

This bit from the article, "Martin, who is already on probation in Alabama" sums it all up for me.

I would assume that already being on probation would disqualify one for probation.

How odd it does not.

Well, gotta keep those prison cells available for pot-smokers, I suppose.

Maybe it's some strange states-rights thing where Alabama and Florida don't care about each others probation cases?  If so, for state-level offenses it might be possible to serve 50 concurrent sentences as long as you get out on probation for each one with enough time left to commit a crime in another state.

I smell a reality television opportunity...

Absolutely no word on the condition of the manatees.  Shows what is really going on here.

trappedspirit: Absolutely no word on the condition of the manatees.  Shows what is really going on here.

Actually there's a sliver of good news on that front in the article, but yeah I agree that more info about what happened to them would be good.  The end of the article noted that the judge said if there was any evidence that the manatees were injured that the men would have been sentenced to jail time.  So I take that to mean that the prosecuting attorney didn't present any evidence that the animals were harmed when trying to get the men convicted.

People slice those poor creatures up with boat propellers every day and nobody cares so I doubt they give serious thought to what the kids did. If there hadn't been a media storm they most prolly wouldn't care at all.

I agree with you in general.  The reason I'm a little hopeful in this case it that the prosecutor presumably wanted to nail these guys and if there was any evidence that the manatees were harmed he/she probably would have used it to strengthen the case against them.

Agreed for sure. It would have given me pleasure to sentence those POS idiots to a year in federal prison.
