FTFA: Reports indicate that an undisclosed mining company in South Africa has purchased 25 of the "Skunk riot control copter" devices developed by military surveillance and communications contractor

That got depressing fast.  I don't know what a South African mining company would need with riot control devices, but I would hope they'd need a better name than "Skunk".  I'm all for the development of corporate militaries, but I'd like to see the PR folks pull their weight.

Pepper spray isn't magic. If they can hit you, you can hit back.

Lasers? Bigger problem, but it's illegal to use high powered ones. So some normal welding goggles should be enough to take the sting out.

They need the drones cause of miners rioting, usually over low pay and brutal working conditions.

Probably Amplats. Dealing with a 5 month old strike by mineworker unions. Current news is that they and the Unions had just reached a deal when the Unions demanded an included measure (i'm not sure for what, the article wasn't very clear) which would cost the mines a further R1 Bn (around $100 mill) on top of what was agreed on in the settlement. The M.O. of strikers in dear old SA is to riot and burn as much property as they possibly can, too. Oh, and to torture/murder the workers not taking part in the strike.

Rumour is that amplats have called in a bunch of experts from Europe to survey the viability of mechanizing the mines. South africa still has mostly worker-labour intensive mining with very little mechanization for the purpose of keeping a lot of people employed. That is biting them (Amplats and the other mine owners) in the ass now with a strike every other year.

No. Unions are useful in most cases. The problem here is is that the Unions have deep political ties to the ruling party the ANC (in most cases) and holding the mines hostage is as much a political war as anything else, since there is a big calling from (mostly stupid) people in this country to nationalize all the mines.

To be fair, the MO of most groups in Africa is to riot and burn things, when they're not to busy killing witches, that us.

All you naysayers better wise up. I used to be skeptical, too. I foolishly doubted AIex Jones and his warnings about flying pepper-spraying drones. That is, until I was in NY last Thanksgiving and witnessed one of these drones firsthand. Gawdamned NYPD was in pursuit of a little Mexican kid wearing a backpack, when the drone was suddenly unleashed on a crowd of innocent bystanders...
