Yep.

This is less a top list and more of a list of stuff on my DVD shelf, X-Men that I just saw and Twelve Monkeys so I don't sound shallow.

Groundhog Day or BTTF should be at #1.

Back to the Future and Groundhog Day. The others can get out of town.

2014-06-19 08:21:23 AM
X-Men:DOFP shouldn't be so high on the list. I mean, I loved the movie, but the time travel was simply, "Hey, you're in the past now!" Groundhog Day CLEARLY has to be in the top 3 with BTTF and Terminator. In any order. And Looper? Really?! Man, f*ck you.

Is the first Planet of the Apes really a Time Travel movie, though? it's more of a "I forgot to set my alarm clock to wake me up in the morning" movie.

2014-06-19 08:25:59 AM
I've seen 5 of those. I didn't care for Looper. Also agree that The Philadelphia Experiment should be there

2014-06-19 08:26:18 AM
Looper's missing (though I never saw it... was it any good?).

Somewhere in Time... meh.

The classic The Time Machine.

Star Trek: First Contact was a time travel movie, but maybe because both times are in the future, it doesn't count?

2014-06-19 08:27:50 AM
Oh wait, Looper's on there. Sorry, I'm having a bit of temporal lag from my last chronological excursion.

antron: Triangle

That was a fantastic movie, one of my favorites, but it's not really a time travel movie, but a retelling of Sisyphus.

Brad Pitt overacts the f**k out of 12 Monkeys, making his scenes almost unwatchable. It is easily his worst performance ever, even worse than Cool World.

I appreciate that the author wrote that this is a list of ten personal favourites. No grandiose claim about it being the best of all time. That's how it should be with this sort of thing.

It wasn't on there originally, but while you were gone I went back in time and fixed it.

One of the consequences of time travel is that real life has continuity errors.

The Obama Presidency

/It was a major box office success in about five years. The critics trashed it before it came out, and the initial release was limited and didn't do so hot, but it picked up steam on word-of-mouth.

"Aaron, I'm standing at the time border which scientists say follow Terminator rules. That is, it's one way only and you can't go back. This is in contrast, say, to Back To The Future rules, where back and forth is possible, and of course, Timerider rules, which are just plain silly."

I haven't seen it in a while, but recall Somewhere in Time is a nice movie.... a bittersweet love story.

It's more of an alternative future then time travel.

T2 is a pretty fun movie ...but Eddie Furlong is so flipping bad in it, anymore, I have a hard time watching.

Somewhere in Time is how women punish men by tricking them into going to see a "time travel" movie.

Wow ... most people I know love him in that movie. One of a long series of secondary roles he knocks out of the park (at a time when it seemed he couldn't put out a good leading role).

And of course, the list misses one of THE best time travel comedies I've ever seen (and suggest you do, too).

Bonus: It featured a young Mary Steenburgen as the female lead.

Yeah, but in a few years people will look back on it and see that it wasn't as good as they remember, really more or less average, and the only reason it was looked upon favorably was because it was visually better then anything else at the time.  Think of it like Avatar, wonderful to look at, but a mediocre story that has been told many times before.

2014-06-19 09:06:12 AM
They didn't even mention the most clever use of time travel in Bill & Ted; the escape from the detention cell.  The whole "I'll use the time machine to come back later and put this thing here to help" bit is actually really cool.

Which is too bad really. It looked like it was going to be pretty good when they were first making it, but the producers and the director just didn't get a long and the studio kept threatening to pull funding if certain rewrites weren't made and kept meddling with the casting.

It's a wonder it wasn't more of a disaster, really.

I think that writer of TFA is 17.  Maybe 20. Only the inexperience of youth could account for that much fail.

There is in the sense that he travels into the future because his ship is going close to the speed of light, and during that period human civilization collapses and the apes become the dominant species. So the type of time travel that is actually possible if we ever manage to create ships that travel close to the speed of light.

/Still wouldn't put it on a "time travel" movie list though

I think the newness of the lead actor is what drew audiences in to see it.   All the action was shown in the trailers however, and the full movie was a let down.  Sure, it had it's moments, but overall it was just bland.

I have heard people say they won't get fooled by the next blockbuster, but I doubt it. People tend to forget, which is why the two major studios stay in business.

2014-06-19 09:52:00 AM
The Terminator was more of  time travel movie than T2 because it dealt with the effects of time travel, ie the paradox of Kyle being John's dad. T2 was just a chase movie that didn't show any effect on the timeline. Unless they would have kept the deleted scene where Judgement Day never happened and John is a senator and Sarah is old. But then they couldn't have anymore sequels.

You win one unit of win.

Also, Steenburgen at any age is an automatic good thing

You'd think she wouldn't be so skeptical of Doc Brown's time machine then.
