Jay Leno is a funny and nice guy, always has been.  His version of the Tonight Show was very entertaining and always did exactly what it was suppose to do and that was why he was almost always ahead of Letterman in ratings...

Leno was and is a class act.

Hate all you want.

Ha ha, subby.  You made a funny about Jay Leno not being funny!

I'm in stitches here.

Have you seen this award, Kevin?  Have you heard about this?

I have no problem with Jay Leno.  What should I?  He does what he does, people pay him astounding amounts of money to do it and he has his airplane hangar full of toys and such.  I cannot, however, watch his show because it seems to me that this man could not interview a flat rock without completely interrupting it at least 4 times.

2014-06-18 08:19:56 PM
i chuckled more at subby's headline than any "Tonight Show" shtick

2014-06-18 08:20:04 PM
He's been funny at times, I do like some of the voice work he's done in cartoons, where he parodies himself. But I haven't liked the Tonight Show in many, many years, it just got meh.

I'd say he truly earned this award 1989's Collision Course with Pat Morita. Long time coming, really.

No subby, the joke would have been that Dane Cook won the Humor Award ... and a very sick joke at that.  Leno's alright, he entertained his audience every night on the Tonight Show and that's no easy chore.

2014-06-18 08:33:58 PM
He is far funnier live than on TV.  Even Letterman believes that.

2014-06-18 08:37:50 PM

Minimum: Leno was and is a class act.

No. He's a dick. He presents himself as a nice guy. What he did to Letterman & Conan are proof. He's a corporate douche.

But he could rock a comedy venue. No one denies that.

When can I see you perform subby?

/Leno is a very likeable guy

Pat Morita carried him in Collision Course.

"Hey Jay, your current show blows and we are going to cancel it. Also, that clown O'Brian isn't getting anywhere near the ratings we need. He's getting s-canned too...would you prefer unemployment or your old job back..."

Among those who have not yet received this award are Mike Nichols and Elaine May, David Letterman, Norman Lear, Eddie Murphy, Woody Allen, Don Rickles, and Mel Brooks.

Jay Leno was a perv with young female celebrities. He made unwelcome jokes and they usually seemed uncomfortable in his presence. His jokes were old, softball dad jokes. His show was boring and I stopped watching 15 years ago.

Shhh..... he's listening from the other room.

Leno is a real pro.  He always respected the audience and tried to put on a good show.  Leno still does standup every week and knows what works. I loved Letterman for years but you often had the feeling he didn't want to be there and that he thought you were kinda stupid for watching.  I still like Letterman in small doses.  I never had the patience for Conan's show (stop mugging and gesticulating and just tell the freakin joke already), but some of his recorded bits are hilarious.  Kimmel puts on a great show but gets obsessed about certain things.

Like I said, Leno is a pro and tries to give the audience what it wants.  Worked for him.

2014-06-18 09:25:22 PM
Leno had a team of writers doing all the work for him on the Tonight Show. Everything from his monologue to the wise cracks he made interviewing guests was scripted ahead of time by others. I'm not saying he's not a funny guy, back in the day when he was doing stand up he was, but everything he's done in the last 20 years was by no means his doing.

2014-06-18 09:31:10 PM
It makes sense that he's popular with the people that give out awards.

Leno is "comedy for conformists".

No no no no no. He earned the award for American Hot Wax, where he delivered this comedic gem to Fran Drescher:

Leno isn't funny.  And he totally screwed two of my favorite comedians (Letterman and O'Brien).  Screw him.

Ya, Letterman and Conan would have turned down a job if they found out that others wanted the job.

Better than giving it to Conan O'Brien....at least now the only one whining about Conan losing The Tonight Show is his jerk-butt agent Gavin Pollone

Nice to see some people appreciate Leno.  It sometimes seems like I like all the wrong late night hosts and hate all the ones I'm supposed to like (e.g., anyone whose first name is Craig or Jimmy).

I don't hate Leno.  Obviously he's pretty cutthroat in the business but I have heard that he's a very nice guy in the car world.  I find it easy to believe that he is a good live stand up when he isn't hemmed in by network TV, but you list puts the proper perspective on things.

2014-06-19 12:33:55 AM
Leno gets way more hate than he deserves.  He got it from the old folks because he had to follow Carson, now he is getting it from the hipsters because they resent his popularity.  He gets my respect by being such a dedicated car guy.
