I 4ts got to chat with her at a fundraiser before the primary and report she is charming in person, whatever the merits of the tax plan.  A pro-choice medical doctor and admin.  She'll have to say whether she wants to cut food aid and such or close bases.

I do recall Gingrich proposing that corporations suggest a tax rate they could live with.

TAXES BAD!

"For example, reducing corporate and individual tax rates to 25% would create million [sic] of private sector jobs and increase wages for American workers."

Sure, because when rich people have more money they ALWAYS share it with their employees. Does anyone still buy this trickle-down snake oil?

Pretty much. Merkley would have to get caught eating a Bald Eagle or something.

This is the lady that when running barely identified herself as a Republican, and wants to cut people's health insurance off.

She's running against the governor more than Merkley.

Running for office each year becomes more and more like jr. high school voting for class president running on the promise of "longer recess".

Obama just pilfered over a trillion dollars from the working people in taxes so far this year. Why any Republican would be expected to offer new ways for Obama to rob Americans is unclear.

I am so tired of this game. It always works. All they have to do is get people saying "don't vote Democrat if you don't want your taxes to go up" and people will vote Republican no matter what because they are cash short or greedy or both.

It makes absolutely no difference if the Republican's "plan" is bogus, illogical, doesn't really exist, an outright fraud or any combination. 98% of the people won't do the homework even if they do care about the details. They just assume that someone smarter than them did do the math and the things they are used to getting will be paid for somehow. All it has to do is promise lower taxes and they will go for it in droves.

Several years ago they wanted to cut taxes, increase defense spending, balance the budget, and not hurt Medicare and Social Security.  Somebody finally got it through their skulls that this is impossible.  So you get the Romney & Ryan plan of cut taxes, increase defense spending, balance the budget in 50 years, and gut Medicare and Social Security.

Business owners hire exactly the number of people they need in order to run their business and make a profit. They don't hire 1 person more. The only reason a business owner will hire more people is to meet increased demand for whatever it is they're selling. Give the owner a tax break, and he'll hire nobody. Give the owner a thousand new customers, and he'll hire more employees.

Pfft, his tax plan was incredibly specific, you just have to decode it.

Lower the rates, broaden the base.

Lower the rates = cut taxes on the rich
Broaden the base = add a bunch of new taxes on poor people.

Actually, that is true. If consumers have more disposable income, they're more likely to spend it. Especially if that increased income is spread out over the entire year rather than showing up in one lump some.

Well, it's certainly a line that sells to the lowest common denominator. Even a Rob Ford can get some people to vote for him by managing to slur out the words"Cut taxsshhs". But it only works for so long, like any magical spell or thinking.

Which also suggests that we should raise minimum wage rates, and raise wages at all levels across the board.
But yeah, business owners don't hire more people if they have more money. They hire just enough to make as most as they can. They would not meet their fiduciary management to their shareholders if they were to spend excess profits on unnecessary workers.

The laffer curve: because an entirely theoretical thought experiment that hasn't ever been actually observed, much less quantified, is the best tool to use to make highly specific claims about the net merits or costs of a tax rate change.

Why not make a higgs-boson tax plan?  At least those are  probably a thing.

The only problem with that term is that it's too generic.  It could describe the economic policies of e.g. Venezuela just as easily as it could trickle-down.

I don't hate taxes, either. I don't like not having the money, but I like a lot of the programs that money pays for. The only tax I am subject to that I hate is the Use Tax, and I simply refuse to pay it. I think it's asinine to have a tax that relies on everyone subject to it self-reporting and that there is really no way to enforce. Plus, I'm not going to save my receipts for out of state or internet purchases made throughout an entire year and then try to determine which ones are actually subject to the tax, which ones aren't, and which online retailers have a nexus in Illinois. Either come up with a way to remove the burden from taxpayers and enforce the law or eliminate the Use Tax.

Fine. Drop the upper income and corporate rates to 25%. In exchange, the individuals and corporations in that bracket get zero deductions. None. Nothing. If you make $1 million, you pay $250k. Do we have a deal?

I haven't heard anything about the guy that won the Republican primary for governor.  Must look at the statewide returns.

Oh wow. More people voted for Merkley than voted in the entire Republican Senate primary.  Same with Kitzhaber and the governor's primary results.

The GOP wants an American empire, but they also wanna play dine-and-dash. The first thing to understand about starting an empire is that all empires are expensive. If you aren't willing to pay top dollar to maintain your empire, you aren't actually interested in having an empire.

Do you want a miniscule government or do you want a massive empire, because you cannot have both.
