Researchers are now hoping to find live samples of the disease elsewhere around the globe. But warn that it would have to be carefully contained to avoid a new epidemic.

May I draw everybody's attention to the fact that they can't extract a viable sample of the virus/bacteria/whatever because of the climate of Egypt? So, much ado about nothing.

Yep
Not to say that the Cyprian plague isn't scary, because it certainly is.  I guess they wouldn't have gotten nearly as many hits if they had said 'ancient smallpox victims found'.

Saint Cyprian, bishop of Carthage, Tunisia, was an early Christian writer and linked it to the end of the world as he heard stories of it spreading from country to country.

He wrote: "The kingdom of God, beloved brethren, is beginning to be at hand."

Well don't sound so excited.

He said: "In a climate like Egypt, the DNA is completely destroyed."

But it preserves the shape of everything well? I don't know how this works. I've just heard of everything being preserved better by deserts.

ltdanman44: you mean smallpox subby?  No!  Plague of Cyprian sounds much more scary!

The symptoms mentioned in contemporary accounts don't sound like smallpox. I read on the wiki page for the plague it says "probably smallpox", but there's no (citation needed). Why not? There is for every minute detail of someone's toenail, but calling a plague of epic proportions "probably smallpox" is okay?

I dispute the smallpox hypothesis.

I am an expert in contagious diseases and smallpox in particular, and I'll be writing to Wikipedia to complain.

/not really.

The plague of 1630, 1810 fresco by Luigi Vacca (1778-1854). Collegiate Church of Saints Peter and Paul, Carmagnola. Italy, 19th century.

Over a thousand years off and that was a bubonic plague.

The Deliverator called, wants his tablet back.

Once upon a time, there was no snake, there was no scorpion,
There was no hyena, there was no lion,
There was no wild dog, no wolf,
There was no fear, no terror,
Man had no rival.

In those days, the land Shubur-Hamazi,
Harmony-tongued Sumer, the great land of the me of princeship,
Uri, the land having all that is appropriate,
The land Martu, resting in security,
The whole universe, the people well cared for,
To Enlil in one tongue gave speech.

Then the lord defiant, the prince defiant, the king defiant,
Enki, the lord of abundance, whose commands are trustworthy,
The lord of wisdom, who scans the land,
The leader of the gods,
The lord of Eridu, endowed with wisdom,
Changed the speech in their mouths, put contention into it,
Into the speech of man that had been one.

Do you really want to cart around those things, that's just a back problem waiting to happen.

Totally with you on the rogue research labs thing. I think we need one dedicated to breeding a humanzee too. Just for kicks. And populating antarctica with cloned mammoth herds.

It was smallpox.

The Cyprian Plague was smallpox. You know, the stuff we've pretty much eradicated?

Alarmist bullshiat. Stop falling for this crap.

This reminds me of something I read about the black plague.  Monasteries would have people throw gold and so forth over their gates to try and be saved from the disease.  The monks, fearful of contamination, refused to go near the piles of gold and so they just lay there for decades.

2014-06-18 05:43:25 PM
Actually, I take that back.

It wasn't "pretty much eradicated". It's been certified to be eradicated by the WHO. As in, it no longer exists as an infectious disease.

Maybe.  But then our DNA extracting techniques are constantly improving.  I remember reading that Neanderthal DNA would be impossible to extract because it was just too old, but today we have an extensive Neanderthal genome.
