A cell hone by the very nature of its operation, combined with US law, is spyware:  It has to "ping" the local cell towers so that the system knows where to route your calls.  Essentially, it beacons your location every few minutes, even when you aren't actually using it.  Those records are required to be stored by the cell providers for a certain period of time, and the cell providers are required by law to make them available for law enforcement upon request.

It's even worse if you've got WiFi enabled on your phone, because it can be much more accurate than a cell tower based location, and you've got no expectation of privacy on someone else's WiFi network.

If in the 1970s I was saying that everyone would have a tracking device on them I'd have been ignored as a crank. If I said that everyone would being PAYING FOR THEM, I'd have been either locked up, high level NSA, or killed on the spot.

Of course article was referring to embedded malware, not 'mere' spyware, which given that Android code came from Google, is pretty much a given too

If you don't like google products being heavily subsidized by advertising and data reaming, don't use them?  It's not like it's a surprise that the massive numbers of free services google provides are paid for somehow, is it?

This. If you're not paying for a commercial service, you're the product and not the customer.

Android phones are free now?  (and not as in free with 2 year contract.  That's not free ) Wow.  Unique business model!

And don't take my acknowledgment that it happens as a big objection that it does.  I just find that many people seem oblivious to it, so I like to remind the world how they are paying for certain things.

Shame they didn't mention the brand of phone.

I've got more than a few friends who use Straight-Talk(it's cheap), and those phones are made by ZTE. They are the biggest hunks of crap I've ever seen. Wouldn't surprise me if it was them.

RTFA.  It's branded "Star", but they were unsuccessful in tracking down the actual maker.

Awww! Did that joke hit a sensitive spot?

Being a fandroid is actually exactly the same as being an apple fanboy. Claiming your fanatical drivel is different than your chosen enemies' makes you a moron.

I don't advocate anyone buy iProducts. Nice try though.

Awww..

You can't tell the difference between an operating system, Linux, and a company selling pink phones to girls, Apple.

Next time, don't bring a bowling ball to a basketball court.

My apologies. The ZTE phones aren't visibly branded, either. They have names like "Majesty" and crap like that, so I thought "Star" waas just the model, not the maker.

The only way to tell for sure on droids is to dive through the system settings.

Yup.  Phone company knowing what county I'm in is comparable to software that intercepts personal info and sends it to a server in china.  I'm shocked this thread went any further than this unique contribution.

just picked up a Galaxy Note 3.  Love it.  Don't love all the Samsung Touch WIz junk, but some of their
"add on" features almost make it worthwhile.  As Dittybopper mentioned, your phone is spyware, no matter the manufacturer or OS

I have a ZTE N9810 (pretty nice, BTW) and the first thing that caught my attention in the article was the one model number that was mentioned: N9500.   ZTE makes a model N9500 that is available from Sprint who call it the "Sprint Flash".  It is quite probable that many ZTE models, including the N9500, are marketed by other companies under other model/brand names.

So yeah, I'm thinking the "bugged" phone was probably made, though not necessarily bugged, by ZTE.
