Do you think he's not aware of how he's seen?  By being an insufferable blow-hard, he gets mentioned all the time in the media.  I'm sure if you checked major news stories about wealthy Americans done in the last 12 months, he'd come up near the top of the list for media mentions.

I'm sure Steven Jobs knew that he came across as a complete jack-ass, that didn't quiet down his behavior, either.

I know what it is, but it transcended that 5 years ago and has become the starting point for many people's news. I know this because it's obvious. The Daily Show is part of politics now.

It's propaganda disguised as comedy. And no, I don't care how that sounds since I am correct.

I want my comedy divorced from politics, I mean, they at least can't share the same beach house, except on holidays.

It's not so much that I'm surprise that people give a crap what Donald Trump is up to, it's that I can't believe people still give a crap about Jon Stewart.  He became a cliche parody of himself within the first couple of seasons.

For some reason there's this group of people who are all about Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Seth Rogan.  They get all of their news and worldviews through those lenses.  And at the same time, they're also the loudest bunch of farkers on the internet and know nothing about the things they shout about.

If you still find the Daily Show interesting, it's probably time to get out of your mom's basement and get a job.

I LOLed.

Aristophanes in "Clouds" also had an ax to grind with the targets of his satire.  That doesn't make it anything other than the 2427 year-old farking poster-child for what farking political satire is.

Just because you don't understand what political satire is, or that its level of influence is irrelevant to its status as satire, doesn't make it less so.

It's been a while since I've been to Chicago but last time I was there I seem to remember there was a huge Boeing logo on one of the buildings downtown. The Trump sign doesn't look like it is more of a visual clutter than Boeing but can't tell for sure without them side by side. Trump is one of the largest douches on the planet and probably is loving the controversy since it gets him in the limelight again but that's not reason enough to apply different rules to his building than the rest.

It works particularly well against 0'Reilly who can't seem to come out of character, drop his schtick and be real.  In my world, I like to think that most of the bloviators on TV only believe half of the things they spew.  Stewart at least points out the hypocrisy and cartoonish nature of politics and does it with humor.

When there has been pushback on the Daily Show, it's usually for things that are, in fact, bits. On the rare occasion it's not, they've been actually pretty good about admitting fault (It's really not a rare thing for Stewart to say "I was wrong") or addressing the criticism in a serious tone. I don't think I've ever seen an instance where The Daily Show has specifically used the "we're a comedy show" response when they were clearly doing some serious editorializing. If you've got a specific example of that, feel free to provide.

Usually, that response is reserved when they're doing things that are, specifically, jokes.

I did before I threw them out.  Do NOT follow the urge to buy Spy: The Funny Years the supposed 20 year retrospective volume.  The reprints are way too small (and their type was alread on the small side in the first place) it is not a comprehensive anthology as suggested by the cover, and the overanalysis sucks the humor out of it.  It was also kind of a publication in and of its time, most of it doesn't age well particularly the Page Six style smarm on local personalities.

quick synopsis:

1. inherit $200,000,000 from someone who turned a profit exploiting government relief funding after the depression
2. turn your $200,000,000 into -$5,000,000,000
3. get bailed out and walk away from the $5,000,000,000 debt; $1,000,000,000 of which you personally guaranteed
4. have an IPO, based largely on the investor confidence from not being required to pay off debt
5. profit

I'm pretty sure that if anybody laughs, it IS comedy. If comedy/"propaganda disguised as" gets more people paying attention to politics than otherwise would, I think that's a good thing.

Is there some new definition of the word "comedy" you're using?

Also, I am pretty sure I would hate your idea of a comedy show.

He is a court jester.  He does what court jesters do.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jester

In ancient times, courts employed fools and by the Middle Ages the jester was a familiar figure. In Renaissance times, aristocratic households in Britain employed licensed fools or jesters, who sometimes dressed as other servants were dressed, but generally wore a motley (i.e. parti-coloured) coat, hood with ass's (i.e. donkey) ears or a red-flannel coxcomb and bells. Regarded as pets or mascots, they served not simply to amuse but to criticise their master or mistress and their guests. [5]

It's propaganda disguised as comedy. And no, I don't care how that sounds since I am correct.

I want my comedy divorced from politics, I mean, they at least can't share the same beach house, except on holidays.

It's cathartic.  Not much different from what hard right conservatives get out of Rush Limbaugh when they're sick to death of hard left liberalism.  That said, if I need political catharsis I'd much rather laugh with Jon Stewart than bust a rage vein with Limbaugh.

The lefties are better at comedy, that's for sure. And I appreciate the catharsis of it all, I guess it's worn thin.

"The lefties" - oh, go fark yourself Donald.

Stewart is funny AND smart. Sorry that chafes you because he doesn't suck Sean Hannity's dick while being so funny and smart. Maybe if you got smarter yourself you wouldn't want to be associated with "the righties" anymore.

The Daily Show is a satire of news mediatainment. If "news media" weren't nakedly trying to direct the political discourse, he'd have nothing to push back against.

soseussme: I'm pretty sure that if anybody laughs, it IS comedy. If comedy/"propaganda disguised as" gets more people paying attention to politics than otherwise would, I think that's a good thing.

You got me there, no doubt they get laughs.

The other part of that I disagree on completely. They would be better off reading the newspapers.

Actually, if I focused solely on comedy..I'd starve to death, but seriously I compartmentalize my humor. I have material for an act, and I've gone so far as to use it here and there as small tests. I'm getting there. More material, hone the inflections, work on impressions...

However making a show every day? I think mine would be closer to Chappelle Show (without the "S" is how it started) than the Daily Show, really.

Avoiding the divisive topical humor is kind of my thing in public, in person I mean.

Despite this fact, nobody is obligated to invent falsely equivalent words or deeds to Democrats in a meaningless effort to appear "balanced".

Misconduc: Well considering he started with nothing

"Trump was born in New York City in 1946, the son of real estate tycoon Fred Trump. Fred Trump's business success not only provided Donald Trump with a posh youth of private schools and economic security but eventually blessed him with an inheritance worth an estimated $40 million to $200 million. It is critical to note, however, that his father's success, which granted Donald Trump such a great advantage, was enabled and buffered by governmental financing programs. In 1934, while struggling during the Great Depression, financing from the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) allowed Fred Trump to revive his business and begin building a multitude of homes in Brooklyn, selling at $6,000 apiece. Furthermore, throughout World War II, Fred Trump constructed FHA-backed housing for US naval personnel near major shipyards along the East Coast."

stampylives: TV's Vinnie: How does someone as dense as Donald Trump get to become a bazillionaire while intelligent people struggle to even get a student grant for college?

quick synopsis:

1. inherit $200,000,000 from someone who turned a profit exploiting government relief funding after the depression
2. turn your $200,000,000 into -$5,000,000,000
3. get bailed out and walk away from the $5,000,000,000 debt; $1,000,000,000 of which you personally guaranteed
4. have an IPO, based largely on the investor confidence from not being required to pay off debt
5. profit

The next time someone tells me "I have never heard such tripe from left wing idiots such as you, clearly you have no idea what you're talking about", I will respond with "That's okay, I forgive you."

If someone asks me "Do you have any idea how many millions of people agree with me?", I will respond with "Yeah, you can use it, but it hasn't been cleaned in a while."

If someone asks me "When will you people learn?", I will respond with "About 4:36pm, on a Tuesday."

But I just cleaned it this morning!!

So when he comments on actual hypocrisy and lies, with video evidence, that's fake news to you? You may not care for his style, but it is far from fake news. There are a sizable number of voting mouth-breathers who don't fact-check a thing they are fed by Fox (are you one of them?), or any other news site. JS is good at sourcing info and waving the bullshiat flag on inflammatory, misleading rhetoric. Sorry, but the Fox News crowd provides more fodder than "lefties."

I'd bet you've never actually watched his show because it is too humiliating after a minute. He uses big words and provides citations to back up what he says.

It is not even that I disagree so much as cannot stand his fake laughter, oh and the fact that he hides behind being a comedian when he clearly wants to direct political discourse.

Al Franken has now said he's above reproach..lol

The Daily Show is a satire of news mediatainment. If "news media" weren't nakedly trying to direct the political discourse, he'd have nothing to push back against.

Recently, several reputable/independent media-watch organizations have concluded that The Daily Show is a better source of informed and informative news than CNN, MSNBC, FOXNews, or most other major network news stations. Don't take my word for it, it's easy enough to find on Google. So yeah, it *has* become the starting point for many people. Don't blame The Daily Show for other networks' choices to do pandernews.

And it's not "propaganda" just because you don't agree with it. And no, saying you are correct doesn't make you correct.

By the way, comedy has *never* been divorced from politics. _Bloom County_, _Doonesbury_, Will Rogers, Mark Twain, Punch & Judy, _Punch_ magazine, court jesters through the ages... hell, Hammurabi probably had some guy off in the wings cracking jokes. Politics may not be where comedy got its start, but comedy has informed and shaped politics since forever. You'll get used to it.

/or not... and I really couldn't care

The "lefties," most notably Jon Stewart, chose humor as a foil to the "righties'" choice of vitriolic hate. Right-wing strategists Ailes & company engineered the Politics of Fear that's currently polarizing and destroying the country. Some on the left (e.g. Bill Maher) tried to combat it with equally-vitriolic talk radio/tv from the other side, but it failed to gain traction because fear and hate don't actually play well to middle/left America. Say what you will about the left, you cannot broadly accuse them of hating/fearing other people. The right's complaint has always been that the left doesn't fear other people *enough.* "Bleeding hearts," right?

Then along come Stewart, Colbert, and Jon Oliver. Completely different approach. Call it the Politics of Laughter. It tries to defuse the fear, to draw out the venom. It's hard to hate when you're laughing. And it's effective, and it's expanding.

Now, Stewart's real genius is embracing people (as people) like O'Reilly while making fun of their illogic/gaffes. In other words, reject their politics but dialogue with the person. What I've seen of Oliver misses this; Oliver is too tempted, by the dark side as it were, and criticizes without compassion. It's just the left version of the politics of fear and hate, closer to Stewart in format but Maher in spirit. Stewart knows that presenting the left p.o.v. isn't enough. He's trying to redress the balance of views on the airwaves, yes, but he's also trying to draw some of the venom out of modern politics. He's trying to get people to listen to each other even when-- *especially* when-- they disagree.

Compromise politics is the only thing that ever made this country work. Congress' current historic lows in compromise, do more than "coincide" with an historically low rate of accomplishment *and* historically low public opinion ratings. It's not a coincidence at all.

Me, I've always been a centrist. Like most Anericans, I like some planks from the right and some from the left. But in the last two decades, the right has been trying to force everyone to take a hard-right position or be left out. And it's pushing me increasingly towards the left, since the left is largely still willing to let me be in control.

Sadly, there is a movement on the left to mirror the right's extremism. If it succeeds, I don't know where that'll leave folks like me who don't believe in "pick a side, we're at war" politics. If you agree that blind obedience is a poor substitute for good citizenship, you'll root for Stewart's approach even while hating his views. Oddly enough, he's doing more to protect your right to free thought than any of the mouthpieces I can think of on the side of red-right-and-blue.

Well, not entirely useless - those people always get something done. But a real possibility of charging without pause in the wrong direction all by yourself is worse than simply failing to change the world*. In this case you're probably charging in the right direction, but in a society which politicizes underwater basket-weaving you're going to have a hard time finding a joke which doesn't have some political content.

I have no feelings one way or the other about your point, but the style in which it was made reminds me too much of people like Pat Robertson. There's an admittedly slim possibility that he may be right about something eventually, but if that ever happens nobody will listen because of his track record and because he'll still sound insane. I know nothing of your track record and you may or may not actually be insane yourself (which doesn't really matter on a site like this), but the addition of that one little sentence has probably pushed more people to adamantly disagree with the point than would otherwise have simply disagreed and forgotten all about it.

Then he shouldn't act as if he's not playing favorites, huh?

Yeah... he doesn't. He's pretty open about being more left-leaning.

Here's a question: where's all your anger and criticism over Fox "Fair and Balanced?" Have you *ever* criticized Fox for pretending to be unbiased? I can't recall your mentioning it in this thread.

So your hate for TDS is really about "he doesn't believe what I believe." Stop painting it as something else. There's some debate about whether he actually did what he was given permission to do.

Anyhow, lots of people, and Chicagoans at large, care an awful lot about architecture and the aesthetic appearance of city skylines. To these folks-- yes, they really care and, yes, it really matters.

Misconduc: Isn't donald worth 4 billion? *not sure if serious* that sounds like a ton of cash for someone not successful. I think he just might of picked up a thing or two from dear ol dad.

No, really, he's gone Bankrupt a few times. He has others bankroll the properties he puts his name on, then cashes in on that fame. The dude was in debt billions of dollars in the 90's, and the only thing keeping him afloat were the 3 casino's he owned. As we know, the house always wins. Basically, he accrued a shiatload of debt building the casinos, gave a bunch of property to the Banks while filing bankruptcy and did everything he could to keep his casinos. Casinos generate money. He is known for way overextending his lines of credit, then giving up the farm just to keep his revenue streams. Had the banks taken his casinos back in the early 90's, he'd be a has been right now for VH1's Where Are They Now type shows.

The best part, is up until 2007 or so, he was a Democrat, even being critical of Bush during his presidency. Now, he's a hardcore Republican.

Truth be told, he's not a financial guru or genius by any stretch of the definitions, he's just insane. He's destroyed more of his investments than he's created simply by being The Donald, as if it has some sway in the real world. Simply put: If The Donald is investing in something, get out now, because he will take you down with his own investments.

walktoanarcade: Just like I thought: Fark has become such an extreme liberal echo chamber that you wish for me to constantly state my opinions on everything because you're immature, insecure and a political tool that's a dime a dozen. And I have stated my piece of mind concerning Fox News, and a lot of other shiat.

It isn't my job in life to forever state my mind for you in thread after thread, or for anyone else.

I don't have a team like you do. I'm not even an "independent", I'm probably going to stop voting too because it doesn't affect anything.

By the way, the way some of you follow me around from thread to thread is creepy, creeps. If you dislike me, please, ignore me.

You're probably not capable of understanding someone like me at all.

I'll give it a shot... you are a troll that gets off on the thought of making people angry at what you post.

Wow, so: self-righteous, prone to tantrums, *and* paranoid. By all means, please do stop voting.

Like Farker Mugato said, I have no idea who you are. And like him, I am talking about your Fark identity. If we've interacted before, I don't remember in the least. Nobody is following you around the threads. You need to get over the ego, or the paranoia, or in all likelihood both.

Don't sound so plaintive. Someone here may know of a few psychiatrists capable of understanding you.

No. Not by a long shot.  I tell it like it is. And some farkers are following me from thread to thread, obsessed with me.

Shiat, I know I don't ever accuse Farkers of the things they accuse me of. Some of you are an entirely different species than I.

Yup. What's the saying? "Get a loan for ten thousand bucks and the bank owns you; get a loan for ten million and you own the bank." Scale those numbers up and you have Trump; he leveraged his assets and name into loans so big the banks couldn't afford to let him fail because they'd be overextended and would collapse with him.

He has made a business of being bailed out, and the real wonder is how he gets loans on new ventures. But then, we know from recent experience that banks are as susceptible as anyone to promises of big money.

I'm kinda sick of hearing about "people who only get their news from the Daily Show".  These people do not exist.  You'd "need* to get your news somewhere else for the Daily Show's comedy to be funny.  If you turned on the program, with no prior knowledge of what they were talking about, it'd be like watching a program in a foreign language.

This is the polar opposite of FOX News, where if you get your news from *anywhere* outside the echo chamber, it won't make sense.

No, they are not.  No one is obsessed with you.  You have the attention a sewer pipe that breaks gets.

Go to sleep.  Then wake up, and start and new day and try not to be a douchebag until you go to sleep again.  Repeat.

MontanaDave: Ishkur: walktoanarcade: If I get the feeling someone dislikes me for one thing, I assume they dislike the whole package.

I think what everyone dislikes about you is that when you are wrong (which is almost all the time), you refuse to admit that you are wrong, and instead of letting things go or leaving the thread, you dig deep with the mighty Shovel Of Arrogance, plant your Boots of Ignorance and refuse to budge off your Opinion of Worthlessness, even going so far as to insist that everyone accept that you are right when you haven't the inclination to ever back up your assertions with evidence or citations (hell, you've already done it in this thread).

That makes you a thoroughly unlikable person. Who would even want to have a conversation with someone like that?

This is why I have him/her farkied as "This person is insane."

No joke, even his/her profile. Anyhow, I've got a similar notation on the account now: paranoid, possibly insane.

I wish they'd call it "Farked" instead of "favorited." The former is a good neutral term covering lots of uses. Some folks aren't quite so bad as to need Ignoring, but the need to assign them a warning label doesn't make them a Favorite either.

You just know someone's writing a 'bot to profile us by our Favorites. I don't want to end up on someone's equivalent of the no-fly list just because I needed to assign some warning labels.

Nope. Needs the latest version of flash, which Adobe is dropping support for. Got a real link, now?

Cyclometh: TV's Vinnie: How does someone as dense as Donald Trump get to become a bazillionaire while intelligent people struggle to even get a student grant for college?

A combination of being born wealthy and a lack of ethics.

He bets big every time. When he wins he makes money. When he loses he declares bankruptcy and everyone who did business with him eats the loss.

My parents parents were far better people than anyone alive today, and you can thank one of them for winning WWII because without their help, we could have lost.

There were not many code-breakers back then, not like now.

Yes, I am the product of something that's been in motion for longer than even my parents parents, as are all of us.

Most cities have rules about putting up signs,

As long as trump followed the rules what's the problem?  if a mayor does not like the results, he should call the Director of Planning and Permitting and get those sign rules changed.
