Yet another person whose first reaction to an obstacle in the road is to do nothing.

Norfolk Police Department maintains that my report can't be acted on in spite of video evidence, the motorist's license, and insurance identification.

You can bet your ass that if the driver hit a cop on a bike the report definitely would have been acted on.

Surprise, another self-important asshole SUV driver who thinks rules don't apply to him and concern for other people's continued safety and existence is below his conscious radar.

News flash, colon breath: The fact that you can pilot a land barge down I-64 doesn't mean you get to drive anywhere you farking want.

What kind of mad civil engineer builds a bridge out of pedestrians?

So drivers are forced to share the road with bicyclists but bicyclists don't have to share their pathways with drivers?

Thats fair.

I live in Vancouver, so I've seen some pretty boneheaded shiat from other drivers*. That takes the cake, though.

In what universe is that considered a good idea?

*Yes, the implications are there.

Why was he/she even on the pedestrian walk when the road is right there? What am I missing here?

Obviously the truck shouldn't have been there, but that cyclist had more than ample time to miss the truck.

The Virginia Universe.
It's a f*cked up place.

cgraves67: What kind of mad civil engineer builds a bridge out of pedestrians?

One that is no longer quite so civil of course

though humans make terrible structural members, they have a tendency to wander off unless you permanently immobilize them, then they perform poorly as rigid members over time.

the local govt agency uses that bridge as a roadway, there's a sign that indicates it as such

jigger: Obviously the truck shouldn't have been there, but that cyclist had more than ample time to miss the truck.

He had time but it looks like the camera is mounted to the bike so of he was looking at something, not directly in front of him, there is no way he could have avoided this. Nobody on a bike path is expecting anything as big or as fast as an suv coming around the corner.

"The driver of the Ford Escape involved in the incident was a Virginia Department of Transportation worker......the statement provided by the Virginia DOT says that the pedestrian walkway is regularly used by employees to and from work, and that there are signs warning pedestrians and bicycles that there is a chance they will get hit by a car on a walkway meant only for pedestrians and bicycles"

What the hell?

Stop driving on the sidewalk! This is not acceptable.

Sorry to stiffle your rage but the idiot on the bike made 0 effort to miss running into the oncoming truck, so fark him. Says right in the article that the bridge is sometimes used by vehicles and not to be a tool about it but apparently farkers aren't the only ones who don't bother to read.

2014-06-18 09:17:28 PM
Oddly enough, the statement provided by the Virginia DOT says that the pedestrian walkway is regularly used by employees to and from work, and that there are signs warning pedestrians and bicycles that there is a chance they will get hit by a car on a walkway meant only for pedestrians and bicycles, as if that makes it all somehow acceptable.

On one hand, yeah, it's dumb to have cars driving in the bike lane. But the SUV was plodding along slower than a bike, and the cyclist made no effort to avoid him (and appeared to not be paying attention as well).

2014-06-18 09:49:23 PM
The video clearly shows the Virginia DOT employ steering away from the cyclist. The idiot on the bike crashed into the suv.

the Weeners in TFA is one I agree with

"I`m not arguing that the car shouldn't have been on that bridge, but the cyclist seemingly made no attempt to move over or slow down, and almost looks to have hit the car on purpose. I know a few cyclists that wear helmet cams like this, and the majority are colossal douches."

I agree the cyclist aimed for the car and was surprised it continued to exist.

It appears the cyclist had warning there may be other objects existing in reality but failed to prepare themselves for the possibility.

Stop driving on the sidewalk except where explicitly allowed! This is not acceptable.

Three year olds get told to look where they are going or they will have an accident.

You`re saying that this person is operating at the level of a three year old?

The SUV didn`t hit them, they hit the SUV.

There is a very obvious way they could have avoided this.

Looking where they were damn well going...

FTA "there are signs warning pedestrians and bicycles that there is a chance they will get hit by a car... as if that makes it all somehow acceptable. "

You know, strangely it does.

In fact it makes people just riding into the cars they were warned might be there NOT acceptable.

I find it strange they warn the bicycles, not the bicyclists.

Maybe that`s why this cyclist wasn`t ready?

I find operating motor vehicles on a pedestrian overpass to be unacceptable. It's farkin' stupid and whichever paper pusher at V-DOT thought it was a good idea needs a swift kick in the arse.
