And yet, I bought one last year, and do not regret that purchase.

/Still better 1st party titles than PS4 or Xbox One.

When Wii U craters in price, I'll scoop one up. MarioKart is digital crack. I just want a good deal.

Eh, the price cut already happened. $400 for the PS4 didn't stop anyone and the Xbone is really doing OK at $500, will probably do better at its new price. They really just need hype and marketing.

THIS

Seriously, the Wii U seems to be Wii + HD, and I'm not spending £250 for that. When they hit £100, I'll get one.

Just waiting until after this round of races (hoping I don't crash).  Once the budget has shaken out, I'm getting one for Mario Kart 8 and Smash.  Until now, there simply hasn't been a single reason to own a WiiU.  Also, Nintendo is absolute farksticks regarding YouTube critics/LPers, and I don't want to give them any money that isn't absolutely earned via top-shelf games.  They deserve to starve until they pull their collective head from their collective ass.

Granted, there wasn't a single reason to own a PS4 at launch either, yet here we are... (inFamous: Second Son was fantastic though)  I spend more time playing small indie titles than anything else.  Watch_Dogs is absolute crap, and it's a struggle to be bothered with finishing it.  Glad I wasn't the one who paid for it, but still angry that Ubi got that $60, regardless whose pocket from which it came.  On top of the boring gameplay and uninteresting story, the damn UPlay login screen is the first thing you see every single goddamn time you load the game.  On a console.  Fark them.  Swearing off Ubisoft titles from now on.

Xbone will probably be viable this Fall.  They released the Kinect-less package, but there still aren't any games for it worth playing, excepting Dead Rising 3, which I'll be picking up on PC instead during a Steam sale.  Still, Microsoft has addressed pretty much all of my grievances with their product, so it'll be welcome in my home.  Just not yet, since they don't have any compelling titles to warrant another $400 purchase - I already blew that load, so everybody else has to earn their place.

Definitely going to be picking up a PS TV at launch.  I love my Vita, but sometimes I want a bigger screen...even though the OLED screen on the Vita blows every single TV away.

It seems like Nintendo may be pulling back on their efforts to focus on the North American market overall, aside from the 3DS. The Wii had fantastic hardware sales, and they did what they could to have a good library for it, but they lost steam. With the XBO and PS4 having motion (and voice) controls and cute little representative avatars, they more or less stole the thunder that made the Wii unique.

With the lack of aggressive marketing of the Wii U (coupled with the poor choice in console name, leading to internal brand confusion, like people not realizing it is a new console) and a comparatively weak starting library (lacking a new Zelda/Metroid/Smash bros/unique new Mario game), Nintendo really needs to nail down their next console launch here in North America, or have some major new blockbuster IP revitalize interest in the Wii U.

Growing up on Nintendo since back in the mid-80s, it is kind of sad that they are no longer the "go-to" company. I hope they pull themselves out of this rut, because I believe they are too stubborn of a company to do what Sega did, which is cut their losses and become a software company instead of hardware and software, and they would likely never license their IPs for use on other consoles.

I bought one before the price dropped and I adore it.  It's worth every penny I spent on it.

A controller for the Wii?

A portable Wii?

I think the deal just needed to be sweetened with some compelling games. I think Mariokart has done more to sell Wii Us than anything else- those Mariokart bundles aren't the easiest thing to find right now. I had toyed with the idea of getting one but ended up deciding none of the existing games sounded that interesting to me. With Mariokart and the impending Smash Bros, I think it might finally be interesting enough to buy.

If I can find a Mariokart bundle I may just grab one. I do wish it had better third party support but at least Nintendo's first party games tend to be good quality.

On the assumption that Mario Kart won't be your only game, you should consider that if you buy it and register it before July 31st, Nintendo is offering a free game download - one of New Super Mario Brothers U, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, Pikim 3, or Wii Party U.  You're unlikely to see much of a console price drop for the time being, since the console has already dropped in price since its release.

New consoles are almost always never worth the initial investment at first. And those that look like they are (3ds, Vita), they suffer worse for the next year because all the games came out at once instead of scattered for the next six months.

Sony and Microsoft will always have their exclusives, but Nintendo lives by their exclusives. It's all they have anymore, and thankfully they're good enough devs and have a large enough fan base for that scenario to work. Otherwise they'd have gone the way of Sega a while ago.

I didn't know that.

Have you heard of the search engine called Google Search (more commonly known as Google)?  You can enter terms in there to search for information about subjects you may be unfamiliar with.  If you are uncertain how to enter a search term, you can always click on the article whose first sentence includes not only a statement about the Wii U being a console from Nintendo but also a link to another article that gives more information about the Wii U.

Seriously. They could do a lot with the tablet-controller.

Sucks that Minecraft will never come to the Wii U. Seems like the perfect console for it to be on.

...Ok, might be worth getting. I've been looking for a reason, and while the new Zelda game looks enticing, enjoying Wind Waker again would be awesome.

i dunno what you're talking about here... having first hand experience with all 3 consoles, neither the ps4 nor xbone either: A) have cute little avatars (both emphasize profile icons) or B) emphasize motion controls (despite the kinect2 being better nobody is buying the one or two titles made for it and microsoft is abandoning it because it was not worth the price disadvantage, also sony has barely done anything with the built-in move tech)

they do emphasize voice controls albeit xbone is perfectly usable without it and sony's voice controls are extremely limited to the point of being garbage/gimmicky

you're right about brand confusion - both the 3ds and wiiu suffer from this (it took years, a price drop and must-have games for the 3ds to not be talked about like a ds with a "3d" effect)

realistically it'll take the same for the wiiu - it needs that $199 price, it already is getting the games

dunno what to say about nintendo's marketshare - outside of the wii all of their platforms have had a steady lifetime decline from each generation to the next, they can try to hit gold every 5 years or be pragmatic and realize that their future can't be banked all on video games

I would spend $10 on a U if Nintendo refunded the money I wasted on the original Wii.

I'm not a hardcore gamer by any stretch of the imagination, but I can only tolerate the cutesy Zelda noises, blue shell bullshiat, and childish minigames for so long before the novelty wears off.

Now, if Nintendo offered old titles in the VC at reasonable prices, I'd be on that like a fly on shiat. But I'm sorry, $5.00 for a 30 year old NES game, AFTER I had to buy a $200 system to playit on plus a $30 controller, is just ridiculous compared to what you get from other services that sell older games like Steam and GoG.

/ for example, I just bought all the major Ultima games on GoG for $7.00

The Mario Kart 8 Wii U bundle is actually not a bad deal if you're buying into the console for its only "killer app" so far. They want $60 for Mario Kart by itself, then you get the additional free game, and a wiimote+ (usually $35 or $40), and the useless piece of plastic steering wheel that you can put the wiimote in, all that adds $30 to the price of the base console. Not terrible.

Ok, I went to the Wii U website. It has a picture of something that looks portable, and a screen, and something that looks like a Wii, and it says this is a Wii U, an entirely new system. Then it shows some Wii controllers. It says with the Wii U console, I get the Wii U gamepad. And it plays Wii games? So I don't need a Wii? It's a portable Wii? What is up with it being plugged into a big screen? Do I need a big screen? I only have the one for my computer.

"The Wii U GamePad controller removes the traditional barriers between games, players and the TV by creating a second window into the video game world."

This makes it sound like it's just a controller for the Wii.

Is it a farking portable Wii or not? Does anyone know what it is or does?

Not even Nintendo knows what it is.

It seems pretty unlikely.  Just imagine how expensive customer service would be.  I'm tempted to continue to feed it for hilarity but that might turn into thread jacking.

Are you being willfully obtuse, or are you just stupid?

It's a new home console with a unique controller.  It is also backwards-compatible with Wii titles.  There's a big section at Nintendo.com called "WHAT IS WII U?".  Not once do they say "It's a new controller".  They're very clear about what it is, so it's likely that you're just really really stupid.

Well, a portable Wii would be cool, that's the only thing I'd be interested in, but it sounds like it needs to hook up to a home console and I don't have any need for that. So I guess there's no reason for me to care about it.

Sorry I'm so stupid about something that nobody can give me a reason to care about.
