Actually, forget I said that.  I'm either not awake or that was a really badly written article.

They will build this thing in 6 months, and in 6 years it will collapse and kill thousands when they have another earthquake. And the government will shrug and say "meh".
/shiatty Chinese construction is shiatty.

Why would China name a tower after a city in Arizona??

Low gravity and all that.

2014-06-18 10:06:13 AM
It doesn't look like it's being built for anything other than being a tall structure... It's not like it's an office building or even a hotel... Just a giant hollow spike... Honestly it looks like the worlds tallest carillon bell tower...

2014-06-18 10:06:27 AM
Given Chinese building standards, I think it's fair to say that shortly after completion, this will be turned into a 1 km-wide pile of rubble.

2014-06-18 10:07:30 AM
Looks like it has planets!

2014-06-18 10:08:59 AM
And it will sit mostly empty, like all the ghost cities/malls they built.

You're not awake.

They mention a tower being build in Dubai. All the article is China, China, China.

I wonder if they'll use their traditional construction techniques: bamboo scaffolding, sub-standard materials, disposable workers and bribe blinded inspectors.

/the collapse will be one for the ages!

Looks like something out of Final Fantasy to me.

How about a billion-story building?

Why wont we let athletes use steroids and yet we still associate anything that's awesome with them?

Call me when they manage to build a 62,000 mile tall building, then I'll be impressed.

for good or for awesome: Why wont we let athletes use steroids and yet we still associate anything that's awesome with them?

I had a solution for that for basketball...

So now that the average pro basketball player is almost 7' and can jump higher then ever before, I think it's time to change the court. Everything about the court should be changed by 10%. 10% bigger courts, 10% longer free throw, 10% longer 3point, 10% higher hoop. The exception to bigger would be the ball, and the hoop size. The ball can be the same, but the hoops should be 10% narrower like they are at the carnival games...

Then maybe basketball would get exciting again and not just a 200 point dunk fest...

That is because most of the building will be made of lead.

Nice drawing, but with current building techniques/materials, the actual building will look like complete shiat.  If it ever gets built.

I'd always thought the Henson company and/or Brian Froud could've brought a case against Disney for that ...

Not unlike what happened to the St Louis Space Needle, now known as the Gateway Arch.
On opening day, 35 lives were lost when the shaft buckled, and the revolving restaurant screwed itself into the soft bank of the Mississippi River.

The Chinese have been reading too many old American, European and Russian SF novels. This looks like the cover of a paperback novel.

I like the one in Dubai that looks like giant stacks of gold coins..

But there are only so many ways you can build a giant tower that isn't plain fugly. It is bound to look like a pile of something, or else the Eiffel Tower.

Eiffel tower it is.
