What unfeeling fark would put a dog in a place like that?

/Also, good job for saving him.  Hopefully Riley will share his toys and food with his brother.

//damn, dusty in here.

Chances are that no one put the dog there, it probably got swept down there during a storm.  Water can flood that canyon easily in a heavy rain.  Or it could have been fooling around and fell in.

Maybe he put the dog there so he could save it and look like a hero.

Well, it turns out that dogs walk... This means that they go places besides where people put them. On top of that, they wander off in the desert all of the time. It's not actually possible to search the entire northern Arizona/southern Utah canyon corridor with a couple of people.

So whe you put this all together, the dog probably wandered off from camp, the owners looked to the best of their abilities, the dog eventually wandered into the slot canyon, and the hiker found him,.

Those are good people.  I sent them some steaks and dog treats when this story first aired.
