"Hey, here's an idea - we'll use your companies to fill out our infrastructure. Then, once we're comfortable, we'll start retracting the bennies while ramping up our own corporations using, in part, IP we've stolen from you. We call it the 'China model' - what do you think?"

All while rising a country out of being a total third world shiathole. Damn. More educated people inventing and researching is the worst.

I find it amusing that a country as bureaucratically messy as India is offering financial incentives, which are just going to be returned in the form of bribes to the bureaucrats who drafted the financial incentives.

You do realize that "inventing and researching" isn't what's going on, right? The "inventing and researching" is happening within the corporations India is attempting to entice to their location for manufacturing and distributing. India is attempting to do, now, what China did about 15 years ago, and they're doing so because IP outsourcing is flatlining.

Once they catch up in wealth and knowledge, it'll have to.

True, and kind of the point. But, keep in mind that India's looking at a wealth inequity range that's rising by the day. The exploitation of India's social structure means that the rich are not only getting richer, but are also receiving the social benefits that should be going to the poor. There's no real concept of "trickle down" there (well, there isn't much here, either, but India's at least honest enough to not lie about it.)

Feh - would've helped if I finished the point. :) In theory, you'd be right, if the wealth and knowledge stayed within the country. My point was that, unfortunately, instead of India becoming a better country due to rising social supports and improving infrastructure, the rich are simply hoarding what comes in and moving to greener pastures, leaving the poor to stagnate and ensuring that the cycle persists far longer than it should. Many countries - including the United States - woo educated, wealthy Indians because they bring with them the wealth and knowledge that they gained while in India. China's going through the same situation - the wealthy are Chinese in name only, having left the country to enjoy the benefits and diversions available to the wealthy in other countries, while leaving China's poor holding the rather polluted, oppressive bag.

1 in 4 resident non-immigrants in the United States are from India. That article's rather eye-opening, because you don't hear too many politicians complaining about the fact that they are, in fact, the largest resident non-immigrant nationality in the country. They're rich, and they're spending enough of it here to ensure our complicity.
