Sure, they're great if you like large rodents that eat their own poop and bite.

I want one. I would take it swimming every day and have it wear a little dog harness.

Don't be fooled by the pics...more than half of the guinea pig population are nasty, nasty creatures.

Guinea pigs are bad tempered little creatures. Sure they look all fluffy and lovely, but try dropping a slice of cucumber into a cage of them and they'll fight to the death like Somalis fighting over a red cross aid drop.

Had one when I was a kid. Would sit on your shoulder. He love girls with long hair because he would snuggle into it. One of the best pets.

Sorry to hear that. One of ours died last month too. Two days on Critical Care and we thought he'd pull through, but he faded out a couple hours before his next vet appointment. Thankfully his brother seems to be doing fine.

Guinea pigs are adorable little things with big personalities. We never thought they'd be as fun to keep as they are. That said, they're allergy city, what with the aspen shavings and the hay. Unless our remaining pig really seems out of sorts without a cage mate, we probably won't re-match him and won't have any more when he dies.

Carefresh is better than aspen and no allergy concerns

When we were younger, my brother REALLY wanted a guinea pig, and eventually Mom relented and got
him one.  He was a cut little thing, and a lot of fun to play with.

Until 2 weeks after we got him and I woke up one morning completely unable to breathe.

Turns out I was VERY allergic to them, and it triggered a full-on asthma attack.  I've never had one before
or since, and naturally we had to get rid of the little guy.  My brother still hasn't forgiven me for it.

Had hundreds of guinea pigs growing up. HUNDREDS. Ok, maybe a lot of them were while I was an adult, too. Love the little critters. If I get a job where I can stay in one place, I'll probably get more.

I liked our rabbit too, but it just wasn't a guinea pig. I had some with hair so long I had to trim it or it would drag all over the ground. Those came with a pedigree. Ha. Unfortunately I don't remember my guinea pig's formal name.

Won't happen. Guinea pigs don't get no respect. And it's "cavy day." Rolls right off the tongue, doesn't it?

We do a layer of Carefresh on top of the aspen. It's great stuff, but filling a 2'x3' cage with it every week would bankrupt us in no time. And we get it relatively cheap, too, by buying from the local rescue's store rather than a pet shop.

Also, the hay is the bigger culprit. Nothing to be done about that except suck it watch the little guy demolish it.

That is actually a really good idea to layer it. I should've done that when I had piggles. I love piggles. They are so adorable.

Similar with my guy. A few days on Critcal Care, he began to eat some lettuce but then back slid.

I probably won't get another. I was very allergic to him and cleaning his 5' cage was an exercise in allergy hell. That hay was brutal.

But he was a sweetheart. Dumb as a box of rocks but loved to play and cuddle.

When our family dog died.  Mom decided to get us guinea pigs.

Horrible, horrible animals.

My mom regrets this decision to this day... 40 years later.

The only picture I have of Samantha. All of my family's cats were afraid of her. She loved to graze on the lawn. When it was warm enough, we'd put her in the front yard under an old laundry basket and put a brick on top of the basket for about an hour. She only lived for 5.5 years, but we tried to make them good years--and she didn't bite people. I've never been around a guinea pig that bit, so I must have been lucky or only known people with well-trained pigs.
