(KHOU Houston)   It's nice to know your hard earned tax dollars are paying for cops to film themselves lip-synching Katy Perry songs and uploading them to the internet. "See...we really are no different from anyone else"   (khou.com) divider line 47

They are not allowed to have fun while sitting in a car waiting for a call, dammit. They should be out doing random jackbooted thuggery in their downtime.

I'm much more comfortable watching videos of the cops shooting and beating citizens without cause.

Hey Subby, cops have jobs that are 90% tedium and 10% seeing the worst of humanity.  I disapprove of the jack-booted thuggery but this doesn't seem so bad.

there are worse things tax dollars are going towards.

Here's some examples:
-hugely unfair tax code that benefits the wealthy
-Classified uses that the government can't even tell us about, many of which facilitate spying on us
-hugely bloated military spending

That said, those are your dollars.

My dollars are going towards awesome things like roads and libraries!

If they're lip-synching, how can they be "giving Katy Perry a run for her money"? Does the author of the article know what is lip-synching?

And spare us outragemitter, as though noone else ever goofed off a bit at work...

So what if they have a little fun. I'd rather they be happy. Just because your paycheck comes from taxes doesn't mean you have to hate your job.

I'd lip-synch Katy Perry....

The much of the classified stuff is the stuff that will literally get people killed. That's why they can't tell us.

It looked like the vehicle was moving, so they could have been on the way back to the station, on the way out from the station, on the way to file a report, get gas, etc..

It's not like those two were only hired to do Dark Horse.

If they were doing this while they needed to be at a call then yeah they should get in trouble, but if they were just waiting for something to happen cant fault them for it.

Hasn't it been shown that when police officers get out of their cars and engage the community on foot, crime actually reduces? So how about not sitting in the car all day and walk a block. In fact you will be helping the environment too.

I'd love to break the law in private but I haven't any idea where to find that which would facilitate it :(

Make up your mind subtard. First, you hate on cops for not being human, now, you hate on them for having a bit of fun while they work their jobs. And btw, cops pay taxes too.

That's bullshiat.  Cops have jobs that require them to be alert for their entire shift and in most places it is nowhere near close to "10% seeing the worst of humanity".

Do you hyperbole much?

Most cops won't even draw their weapons even once a year.

Let us know when the rest of us can jack off to Katy Perry while on the job - and get away with posting it to youtube.

Yes, that is true.

I went on a ridealong a few years ago with the police in Aurora, Colo. We went on a walkabout in the very neighborhood where the shooter involved in the Aurora Theatre massacre lived, on the edge of Denver.

I was asked to stay behind the two cops I was shadowing (No bulletproof vest on me), but we walked to a domestic violence call. On the way back, we busted the chops of a ragged old woman who had just smoked crack and the cops showed me how to tell this fact by looking in her mouth. We also arrested a guy who stole a car and recovered the vehicle. It was a good night...

I dispute that.  I don't think cops have jobs that require them to be on alert for their entire shift.  I think that, in reality, it is closer to firefighting where their role is reactive.  I mean they tend to be mobile and patrolling but if they are patrolling then they are keeping an eye on things but they aren't watching everything like hawks.  No-one has that level of concentration.

Their roles generally involve being visible and reacting to crimes.  And when I say that 10% of their job is seeing the worst of humanity I don't mean that 10% of their time is hunting down gangsters.  I mean that 10% of their time is dealing with all those negative things that they get calls about, not just the sexy stuff we see on TV.  That includes, but is not limited to, domestic abuse, puerile neighborhood disputes, people with mental health issues and drunken or drugged up idiots.  The fact of the matter that while the primary role of the cops is law enforcement a good portion of it is, if they are doing a good job, like social work.

Regardless, there's a lot of tedium involved and this innocent video is a harmless result of that.

I used to work for the Federal Air Marshal Service (not a FAM, support personnel) and I have more than one cop friend. What you say is spot on.

Had this on it too. I do like how they used the words "Public Service". I don't see that much anymore.

However, if a citizen films cops lip-synching Katy Perry songs, that's an arrestin'.
