(KHOU Houston)   What's worse than having an abandoned house next door? Having bees make a colony in the abandoned house. What's worse than that? You can't track down the owner, so there's nothing you can legally do to get rid of the bees   (khou.com) divider line 107

There's plenty you could do illegally, and if you can't track down the owner, then who is likely to complain?

keyword "legally", seems like it'd be pretty easy to deal with bees in an abandoned house.

Check public records see where the taxes are being paid from.  If no one has paid the taxes for certain period o time then the house might be acquirable through a tax deed.  Buy house get rid of bees resell house for profit.

/Probability of all of these things being possible is low.

It was the damnedest thing, as I was adding gas to my lawn mower, I was chased into the neighbors yard by a swarm of bees. While my arms were flailing around I must have inadvertently flung gasoline onto the house. I guess the cigarette I was smoking dropped out of my mouth at some point and next thing I knew...

One of my friends for a while was renting a room from a friend (not a mutual friend) in a owned duplex. The other half of the duplex was abandoned, and their roof had started to leak, and mold was starting to seep over into their duplex. Insurance would pay for the other guys repairs. And owner was limited in funds to do much to fix the situation. Luckily my friend was only a few months from end of lease, waited it out and bolted. Just thought it was related, sucky situation all around.

Also, considering that honey bees are dying out, if that's what they are, I hope that if they are removed they get moved to a bee sanctuary or something if there is such a thing.

If they're honey bees, they might be worth more than the house.

Then you would have a burned out shell that would take 2-3 years to have demolished, with no guarantee the bees leave.

the city of houston can demolish the house if it's a nuisance, and it's been done before

just to bee extra safe, don't wear bright colorful clothing or perfumes, etc.  wear dark grays /blacks, etc.  those bees couldn't care less about you.  now if they are republican bees, you would have a problem.

"...that's right officer, I was burning some brush near the house in hopes to calm the bees down while I entertained some family and their snowflakes in the backyard. The wind shifted and by the time I got the garden hose it was way too late. That's right, the hose is only 25 feet long and my dear old grandmother said she would go to the front and get the other, longer hose... she took at least five minutes, by then we had already called the fire department, then you guys showed up. How do you like your steaks?"

If the abandoned house has gotten to the point where it has been colonized by bees, then it's not going to be in good enough condition to easily flip. If you can acquire the property somehow, demo the house and add the lot to yours.

City officials eventually send someone out and the inspector noticed multiple problems including overgrown weeds, an inoperable car and the bees.
The owner has been given 30 days to fix the problems.

Sounds like the City of Houston knows exactly who owns that house. They have a halfway decent "demolish piece of shiat houses" program, too.

Unfortunately, cigarette aren't hot enough to light gasoline. The flare you dropped while looking for your car keys you lost while evading the bees? Might work

That's totally the hood. Look at the southwest corner of the street view it takes you to. Boarded up buildings, trash in the ditches.

Growing up we had a nice patio area out back with stairs and such, well, wasps began making their home underneath from the nooks and cranies and they became such a headache my dad bought one of those bug bombs.  Now the directions said to wait til night because they would all be back in the nest.  We let that sucker off and all you could hear was this loud buzzing, hell even the ground vibrated.  They all died.  Now, if these are wasps ftfa, bomb them, otherwise leave them alone, they're doing more good alive.

Sounds like they're not terribly good at pestering the right agencies.

Call the city for nuisance/code enforcement.

Call the county if they have a health department, and possibly their own code enforcement.

Call the state for their health department.

And yes, the tax records are part of public record, it shouldn't be hard to find the address that the tax bill or payment record (if the house is mortgaged and the taxes are paid by escrow), and there will at least be a mailing address.
