As for the grandmother, the family says they're still trying to figure out where she will live now that most of her belongings are gone.

???

Explain that part to me Subby.  Surely not everything she owned was befouled.

In any event I hope her health improves and you can find suitable alternative arrangements for her.

Is "run" really the right word to use here? It seems unlikely that granny or the maggots would be up to sprinting.

Subby here.

Grandma is still in the hospital at the moment.  Based on what I know, the apartment company has begun excavation of the apartment and they are clearing the maggots out of the walls.  The apartment is completely infested.

She was originally admitted due to high levels of toxicity due to the decomposition next door.  High levels of methane apparently.  That has cleared out of her system, but she seems to be suffering from depression currently.  My aunts live there, but she admittedly does not have a place of her own.  Her belongings have been pretty much wiped out by the infestation.

I should be heading up there over Labor Day weekend to help out my aunts and Grandma.  Any Farkers in the Evansville area want to hang out, God knows I will probably need a drink or two once I get there.

BTW, thoughts and prayers to the gentleman who passed next door.  No family to check on the poor guy?  Very sad situation there.  At least we have family there to make sure Grandma is okay.

I don't get it either. What was it that the family was "shocked" to hear? That the guy was dead? That the place was currently uninhabitable?

Are you volunteering to go through everything and figure which has been maggoted and which is maggot-free?

I think this qualifies as a nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure situation.  On the bright side, new stuff!

Best of luck to you.  Very sad all around.

Certainly not the way any of us imagines spending our twilight years - wondering where we'll live and trying to get the memory and that awful smell out of our heads.

Probably that the guy had been dead for 2 weeks and it took this long to notice, along with the level of infestation getting to the point where the place was uninhabitable.  Neither are things I'd really expect.

No disrespect here, or anything.  But how exactly did this place get "infested" with maggots?  In the walls and stuff?!
Those things kinda depend on a food source.  It's not like they can just crawl all over the places looking for the next opportunity.

Prayers are a form of positive energy and that counts for something.

Thank you.   Been trying to handle the stress of this by reading more from the Dalai Lama, and incorporating the teachings therein.  It has made a difference in my job, I know that, and for that I am thankful.

Cheers to the Fark community.  Thank you for making me laugh.  It helps.  It really does.

Shouldn't there be some sort of program set up for apartment complexes that house the elderly?  It doesn't have to be too intrusive.  Maybe if the apartment door doesn't open or close in 2 weeks the management can take a quick look around (after knocking)?  Let the tenants know they should alert management if they are going to be gone for an extended period.
