A tricycle? How young was the bomber?

I know this is politically incorrect as hell, but I'm glad that America's immigrants come from non-Islamic countries.

Yes, most Muslims are peaceful, good neighbors, good friends, good coworkers.  But so are most Christians, and most Buddhists, and most Baha'is, and most people of any religion.  With these other religions, you don't get nearly as many "bad apples" who decide to blow up civilians in the name of their faith.

Captain Dan: "bad apples" who decide to blow up civilians in the name of their faith.

What's most strange to me is that these guys appear to be true believers in their faith.

If they were simply striving for power or money or status and were just using religion as cloak, their tactics might make some sense.

If killing people watching a soccer match is what they believe their god demands to make the world right, then their god is truly wicked.

I'd like to think there'd be some voices of dissent among their ranks who see that.

Most of the immigrants that have come to America from the Muslim world are generally Christians, at least historically. My own parents came here from Algeria (via the UK) since my dad was a secular professor of Sephardic Jewish heritage that had to get out of such a toxic environment and actually faced death threats (a little before the Algerian Civil War). Arabs and Muslims have ruined the region. Algerians are actually almost all descended from native Berbers but Islam forced arabization on whoever they conquered so people now look down on Berbers that kept their culture and act like they somehow come from the Gulf. Jews were also there before Arabs but that religion forced my ancestors on my dad's side to flee to France or Israel, which is funny since they had to flee Spain into North Africa in the first place. It's disgusting and intolerable.

If the money funding these groups are less about god, and more about geopolitical domino stacking/tumbling, then it's not really about religion.

It's terrible to see the number of non-Muslims in this thread ready to throw Islam under the bus, who are incapable of seeing their own country's involvement and escalation in why things are the way they currently are.  It's terrible, but not unexpected.

ISIS are a more hardcore version of Al Quada. Of course money and power drive them but to act like their hardcore Sunni Islamic views aren't apart of their ideology and rise to power is asinine. They dream of a modern caliphate and use their hardcore Islamic views to control the people as soon as they take power. America caused a crisis in Iraq and Muslim fundamentalists took advantage. Islam should be thrown under the bus right now, they have yet to become secular like the crazy Christians in Europe were before them. It's like saying the Holy Roman Empire shouldn't have been judged based on religion.

Islamic fanatics only have any sort of real power because the West keeps farking around in Islam-heavy regions. You spend decades arming extremists and dictators to fark with your enemies, overthrowing governments because they won't suck sufficient amounts of corporate cock, sending billions to one of the most theocratic of the Muslim states because they sit on oil, and letting Israel get away with anything, and people are gonna get pissed. And when things are destabilized and people are pissed, violent extremists take power. And once they've gotten a good foothold somewhere, they spread to other unstable regions.

Thanks to centuries of Western colonialism, corporate abuse and warfare, many parts of Africa are pretty goddamn unstable. And, funnily enough, there are Christians in Africa that are just as brutal and backwards as al-Qaeda.

Blaming any one religion for the region's ills is ignorant at best. Because religious extremism doesn't form in a vacuum, and it certainly doesn't take control in one.

One of the first acts of Muhammad was to kill all the Jews in Medina. Islam has been violent from the start.

If you think America is Christian, you need to open your eyes and look around you. When the President doesn't find it necessary to attend services on Easter (or any time, really) the idea of a Christian nation is absurd.

America is as Christian as many of these places are Islamic. I don't like it, and I kinda wish that suggesting it was cause for deposition and treason from elected office, but if you're going to sit there and pretend that many elected officials in the US don't publicly declare that the reason they hold a position is because God wills it, then you can just fark right off with your dishonest self.

TomD9938:  If killing people watching a soccer match is what they believe their god demands to make the world right, then their god is truly wicked.

That's a big, unresolved theological question.  Is God 'good' by definition, so that whatever it demands is automatically 'good' even though it might appear otherwise, or is God 'good' because everything it does truly 'good' even by our lowly standards?

If these Islamists operate by the former interpretation, there is absolutely no limit to the evil they can do, because in their sick twisted minds, anything they do becomes 'good'.   Interesting how this and similar belief systems can short-circuit a person's conscience, what little they might have.   Hitchens was right.

It's clear that suicide bombing is, for lack of a batter term this early in the morning, a fad. I would compare it to school shootings here. Kids who feel like they got nothing to lose and want to become a local legend and get the world talking about them. If the news over there is anything like it is here, this bomber will be talked about for a week or more. In Nigeria, this bombing could be mentioned in memorial for years (like Sandy Hook). This appeals to a certain mindset who will end up following the same path because martyrdom and infamy...

A "fad" that has lasted over 50 years, and continues despite being severely underreported in our media... unlike "mass shootings," which don't even require a gun to be physically present any more, or any shots fired, to be reported on the national news as if it's the latest in a string of horrible incidents that only a complete ban on all firearms can solve.

It's not unique to religion. Most of the outrageous human rights abuses are couched in the concept that they are good for the victims.

Consider reeducation camps, forced sterilization, etc.

You obviously have never lived in a major American city, have you? Chicago, at least from what I've seen, has Middle Easterners by the boatload.
But, yeah, I'll certainly agree with your point outside of that. Muslims, just like Christians or any other religion, has it's share of cool people and whackjobs who forget about what their religion is about in the first place (I;m atheist myself, but yeah, not a big fan of the organized atheist idiots either).
