"Dead Man's Gun" off the Red Dead soundtrack still gives me chills.

Dragon Age Origins also had fantastic music.

Mario is not the game I'd pick to represent the best of video game music.

Zelda for popular release game.
Shadow of the Colossus
Transistor has an amazing soundtrack
Bloody Tears from Castlevania II is incredible.

For anyone who is interested, there's a guy/group named Vomitron that do great Industrial Metal versions of video game tunes. They're on You Tube (can't link from work).

/The version of the Ghostbusters theme kicks so much ass.

One of the expositions they did for the new Dragon Age game at E3 featured a live cellist playing the main theme over the trailer. It was awesome.

Also, I love me some Civilization music, and I really get into ESO's music. Sometimes I enter a tavern in the game and I'll get a song stuck in my head for the rest of the day. I'll be sitting at work and suddenly I'm thinking "something, something something... Red Diamond."

I 2nd any of the NES Castlevanias, and want to throw Mega Man into the Mix. Everyone here knows Metal Man's stage by heart.

Still love combing OCRemix for those Chronotrigger tracks. Best VG music ever.

I love Mario as much as the next guy, and the music, but sweet zombie Jesus, that was horrible.

No love for One Winged Angel?

I created a Pandora station based soley on Nintendo and Playstation game music.  I discovered orchestral versions of Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy, and metal remixes of the latter.  I have bought SO many mp3s...

Nostalgia is awesome, especially when repackaged in a format I can enjoy at work.

I have been playing Jet Set Radio, pretty bad ass tunes on there.

Tony Hawk games.

Old Megaman and Sonic games have lots of great tunes.  I love Pokemon music.

I was always a fan of the arranged soundtracks from Chorono Trigger, FF6, And Xenogears.

I do find a good soundtrack makes a game that much more enjoyable.  Hell, even Grandturismo had decent soundtracks for licensed music.  Not composed.

I'd love to get my hands on more.   It kicks all kinds of butt.

All of you are wrong.

Pick just about any soundtrack from an Amiga game.

My personal favorite is the "Apidya" soundtrack. Well, except for the the techno song, which hasn't aged well.

I was thinking that too. Probably in the top 5 of recognizable game themes.

Chabash: No love for One Winged Angel?

No love for "One Winged Angel".  Honestly, that thing just isn't very musical.  It's only noteworthy because it's an early example of a recorded track used in a video game, but that feature is overrated because the instrumentation on PS1 was horrible.  The main combat theme and "Perfect JENOVA" had much more stuff going on so I'm not sure why the trope-iest piece of the bunch got all the love, but it fed my irrational disdain for "new school" gamers.

2014-06-17 11:39:30 AM
Lots of choices. So much good music. Bonus points in that there is an extra emotional element from playing the game associated.

hammer85: Bastion and Nier for me.

Zanarkand and gwyn lord of cinder for the feels.

Good call on Bastion.

I love going back to the soundtracks for Ace Combat 4 + 5, some amazingly atmospheric pieces in there. I was choking up during the final mission of 4, and through the final cinematic.

Heart of Courage. Technically not a video game song, made by a group called Two Steps from Hell, used in a teaser for Mass Effect 2.

2014-06-17 11:40:28 AM
Neither from the game itself... but seriously, the best things to come from ME3:

The titlescreen music for Chuck Rock and Shadow of the Beast were both great. Chuck Rock wins for having an animated band as well.

Chrono Trigger-Just... all of it. Magus's Theme, Crono's Theme, the ending theme ("To Faraway Times"), World Revolution (Final boss theme), just... it was amazing.

Also up there is Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3, Legend of Mana-

The Wild Arms games apparently had some good music, too, though I never got to play them much, alas.

Ace Combat Zero - "Zero".  Full Stop.

A few years back I downloaded all the music from Sonic 1 and 2 and used it to run. It worked surprisingly well.

2014-06-17 11:50:10 AM
Shadow of the Colossus
Chrono Cross
MGS1
FF9

but my personal soft spot will always be Metroid Prime 1. Tallon IV and Phendrana Drifts, and of course the sunken freighter Orpheon:

This

Lady Beryl Ersatz-Wendigo: Skyrim had a fantastic soundtrack.

Also this, although I don't think there was quite enough of it given the length of the game so it seemed a little repetitious.

Child of Light OST - composed by Cœur de Pirate and Beatrice Martin (Canadian artists). One of the best VG soundtracks I've heard in awhile.

This one is one of my favorites from the game though, fantastic chorus:

Everyone: do yourselves a musical favor, add Jesper Kyd to your Pandora/iTunes/whatever list.
And Steve Jablonsky.
And Martin O'Donnell.
And so on.
I mean, look at the persistently most popular classical music. Music written to tell a tale, or accompany the telling of a tale, not just to be performed as an isolated abstraction. Complex, yet simple. Confined by rules, but whose compliance opens to a common language. Now attach that music firmly to a tale that you tell, that you construct from scene to scene, level to level, following the rules of the game. Program music, programmed, programmable. Music to make you strive, to fight, to overcome.
Flight over Venice or Ezio's Family from Assassin's Creed - let your mind and heart soar.
Never Forget/Unforgotten from Halo 3 - if your eyes don't tear up, you have no soul.
Call of Duty/Modern Warfare. Castlevania. Skyrim.
And so on.
