Awful lot of hamstring issues these last few days.

I love the fact that opposing players help the cramped ones stretch out.  Seen that in a few matches now and it's pretty cool for some reason.

Somewhere in between.
There was some Simpsons-style soccer in parts, but there have also been a good number of chances that Korea just Rooney'd up, and a couple from Russia as well.

Wow, that's close. Tough to tell from that angle, but it looks like he may be a step offside.

The player at the post wasn't involved in the play. He's ok as long as the ball isn't played to him.

I wondered about that.  It also looked a hell of a lot like a handball but I fault the Korean side for thinking they had the call and not playing to the whistle (which never actually came).

Eh, maybe.  But frankly that's one of the cases I wish the offside rule could be changed to eliminate.

The ball is right next to the goal and there are already both Russian and South Korean players standing RIGHT THERE.  Nobody is cherry-picking; if the defenders can't be bothered to move a half meter to mark their targets and keep them from getting a shot, then I can't be bothered to care whether the player they were supposed to defend was offside.  Stop waving your hands and play.

wademh: Lord Jubjub: Lord Jubjub: Another update to the standings according to confederation:

CONMEBOL:  4-1-2  13 points
UEFA:  3-0-3  9 points (not including games within EUFA)
CONCACAF:  3-1-1  7 points
CAF (Africa):  1-1-3  6 points
AFC (Asia):  0-1-2  1 point

The order will hold regardless of the result of the Russia/South Korea game.

Can't do math today:

CONMEBOL:  4-1-2  13 points
UEFA:  3-0-3  9 points (not including games within EUFA)
CONCACAF:  3-1-1  7 points
CAF (Africa):  1-1-3   4 points
AFC (Asia):  0-1-2  1 point

CONCACAF:  3-1-1   10 points  <==
CAF (Africa):  1-1-3   4 points
AFC (Asia):  0-1-2  1 point

I said my math was horrible today.  OK, this is the newest standings with the correct math:

CONMEBOL:  4-1-2  13 points
CONCACAF:  3-1-1   10 points
UEFA:  3-1-3  10 points (not including games within EUFA)
CAF (Africa):  1-1-3   4 points

Agreed.  Inside the box there should be no offside penalties.  I'm not going to complain about that one.

I got confused by who the scorer was then. But I just watched it again and it went so fast I couldn't tell. I can't blame any official for missing that in real time.

For sure. I have no complaints that the linesman might have missed it. It was a bang bang play and if he is offside it's by less than a full step.

This is the exact moment it bounces off the Russian player's chest/belly.

Which brings up a question. Is it judged on where the players feet are? Or upper body/center of mass? Or furthest appendage?

jimmythefly: Which brings up a question. Is it judged on where the players feet are? Or upper body/center of mass? Or furthest appendage?

Any part of the body except the arms, as per FIFA.
That's the angle I was looking for. Looks closer from that angle than mine. I see it marginally off, but not at all egregious.

2014-06-17 09:36:23 PM
Thanks for the rules clarification.

It's very close, especially when you look at the feet, not the upper body mass. I think the Russian might literally be a toe offsides.

But unless a linesman is standing perfectly even with the SK player it would be extraordinarily hard to judge in real time.

Can't be looking two places at once. In the time for the brain and eyeball to switch attention between A) has a pass occurred? and B) was a player offside? -all the elements that are being judged have changed positions and you end up letting your brain do a bit of estimating based not only on location of the elements but on their speed and direction and guessing what their position had been a split second earlier.

Which gets me wondering how many teams do research on uniform colors and patterns that might give them a slight edge on the field. Either getting the Ref. to like them more, or having calls like offside go their way, or making it easier to know where teammates are on the pitch, or obscuring their leg and torso motion more making it tougher for opponents while dribbling.

Like in the book "Blink" where the Tennis pro can stand ready to receive a serve and know where it is going before the ball is struck, based on the throw and body language of the player serving.

This article talks a bit about it:

Just to echo Midpoint, everyone remember to get in your predictions for the second set of group play on the TalkSport predictor.  The Fark league is currently first overall with Gonz_Hotspur and myself tied with 210 points for the lead and ranked at 211 overall.  Lets keep it up.
