Octopi only live 1-2 years.  And unlike many animals, they actually kind of are aware of their death.  when an octupus realizes its time is up, it undergoes a process called "senescence", where it ceases eating food and often burrows into a secret hiding spot, where it gradually fades away and dies.

I've temporarily retired the "I root for the US and whomever is playing Mexico" t-shirt. It's like we're a mid-major NCAA conference. Anytime one of us wins in the tourney it looks good for the rest of us.

......However, reproduction is a cause of death: males can only live for a few months after mating, and females die shortly after their eggs hatch. They neglect to eat during the (roughly) one-month period spent taking care of their unhatched eggs, eventually dying of starvation. In a scientific experiment, removal of both optic glands after spawning was found to result in cessation of broodiness, resumption of feeding, increased growth, and greatly extended lifespans

Especially this year, when UEFA's yelling and screaming about how we need to hand them one of our spots because Zlatan Ibrahimovic. If we don't pull our weight this time out, there's one less transfer spot in the Hexagonal for 2018.

I left the Israeli Channel 1 stream open after the game to watch the news...
They just had a report, that because Al Jazera has a monopoly on the World Cup broadcast in the Arab world, and getting the cable box and a subscription is too pricey for the average citizen, a lot of them are tuning in to the Israeli broadcast. Apparently the main Israeli satellite is placed just right for most of Egypt, Jordan and the rest of the region to pick it up easily.

And there's a 23 year old woman having sex with 13 year old boys in public parks in Nahariya. No word yet if she's a teacher.

yeah.  pretty trippy.

I just read a book about octupus that was amazing.  i got it for my daughter as she's really into marine biology (as all girls go throught hat phase).

i was later glad she didn't read it.  there's a chapter in the book about the octupus in art, both ancient times (frescos in rome and shiat) and modern, including -- and this is not bullshiat -- TENTACLE PORN.  Ther'es an illustration of some famous Japanese woodcut circa 1850 or whatever, called "the dream of the fisherman's wife", which shoes this giant octupus chomping Japanese box.  swear to god!  And then, while this big octupus is just mowing down on this chick's pussy, this little octups is playing with her titties.  its a famous painting apparently.  and she's laying back, getting eaten out, not a care int he world.

Yeah, really glad my duaghter didn't see that.  "Daddy, what is Octupus doing?  is he hurting her?"

*shakes head*

If the NCAA were moving to kick the SEC out of the BCS if they didn't win enough this season, then yes. If Mexico, Costa Rica and Honduras don't rack up points, the US pays the price right along with them.

Dammit, I'll be at work behind a firewall. At least I can access Google for the highlights, and can connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot across the street occasionally to check this thread for any profoundly insightful commentary.

We got a few Mexico fans at the office, but I'm feeling trollish and will root for Brazil. Honestly, though, I think mexico will pull through in the end. I also expect Brazil to get real and not take as many dives this time.

Did Mexico get pushed back 2 hours, or is the FIFA website going full clownshoes?

Hebalo: UEFA should just add Brazil and Argentina, and we wouldn't need the World Cup.

I posted yesterday my proposed solution to the problem. I noticed that UEFA didn't have to defend any of their spots in intercontinental qualifiers this year. I, long story short, proposed we put all 31 non-host spots up for grabs in intercontinental playoffs. I (roughly, give or take) doubled everybody's current allotment for 62 spots total. Then the top 31 of those nations in the FIFA rankings gets seeded, and nations are paired off such that a continent can't play itself. The matches are four legs long as opposed to the usual two. The 31 winners go to the Cup.

Basically, I make Europe a little wager. They get the opportunity to claim up to 27 of the 32 spots, plus the host spot if they happen to be hosting. In exchange, they accept the theoretical risk of not sending anyone to the Cup at all, should they lose all 27 of their playoffs.

I even held a drawing based on who would have made the playoffs in 2014 qualifying. What I ended up getting (with the non-UEFA playoffs marked with an asterisk):

Italy vs. Tunisia
Croatia vs. Ethiopia
Ghana vs. Austria
Algeria vs. Iceland
Sweden vs. Iran
Ecuador vs. Hungary
Serbia vs. Nigeria
Spain vs. South Africa
England vs. Burkina Faso
United States vs. South Korea *
Colombia vs. Jordan *
Czech Republic vs. Venezuela
Switzerland vs. Uzbekistan
Argentina vs. Panama *
Mexico vs. Iraq *
France vs. Qatar
Belgium vs. Japan
Cote d'Ivoire vs. Finland
Greece vs. Cameroon
Netherlands vs. Egypt
Germany vs. Peru
Uruguay vs. Montenegro
Slovenia vs. Senegal
Denmark vs. Australia
Romania vs. New Caledonia
Ukraine vs. Oman
Russia vs. Honduras
Bosnia/Herzegovina vs. Jamaica
Costa Rica vs. Israel
Chile vs. Slovakia
Portugal vs. New Zealand
