From his face, I'd guess he was cast as the resurrected corpse of Emperor Palpatine.

At least he's kept himself fit-ish. Modern Mark Hamill looks like he regularly grinds concrete with his face. Carrie Fisher doesn't look much better.

I'm pretty sure that putting those original cast members in this new movie will prove to be a mistake.

Yes. I would go as far as to say I have a bad feeling about this. All 3 of the main actors look pretty worse for wear these days. I know a lot can be done in post production and with makeup, but it's still going to be a tough job making them look not old and not fat. Not to mention the parts of the story that involve them will most likely feel trite and shoehorned.

I am willing to give this the benefit of the doubt and give them a chance, i am sure the roles of the original cast members  have been written to take in consideration what they can do in the present day and i expect the will either be written out in the first film or two or have minor but significant roles.

The latter is my problem. It's like having a kid Boba Fett or C3P0 and R2 in the prequels. We don't need carryovers from the original trilogy to remind us it's Star Wars.

The fact that he is doing anything is rather surprising. I was under the impression he grew old and crotchety, and would rather enjoy anonymous retirement to any fandom via Star Wars or Indiana Jones.

Luke I see being in the movie.  Obi-Wan type mentor roll.
Leia even in a Mon Mothma "sitting in a chair" type role.
Han I can't see serving a purpose.

This, plus they all have personal trainers assigned to them who will get them in shape for their roles.  That doesn't mean they'll be as fit as they were 35 years ago, obviously, but they can all be fit enough to play much older versions of their characters.  Alec Guiness anyone?  Older people can act too, and remember that's first and foremost what they are:  actors.  They're paid to represent themselves as something that they're not, and do it convincingly.  They will be fine.

Yeah. Even the novel writers seem to have no idea what to do with him post-ROTJ unless there's a combat scene. Even in Heir to the Empire everyone and their moms were talking down to him. After Chewie died in the Legends universe you'd think they'd do more with him, make him do interesting, unexpected things. But all he did was mope until some characters we never heard before pull him back from being mopey.

Let's hope the movie writers air all this out during the writing process.

The dude is 72 years old.  Well past retirement age, and he's still working, often in fairly action-oriented roles.  Injuries are going to happen.

Perhaps it is the love child of Leia and Jabba the Hutt from her imprisonment? That would work.

As far as I am aware, when Abrams took over, the entire script was rewritten and Han / Leia / Luke went from essentially making cameos, to being the central characters in the plot.

There was some issue with joint replacement and what type the National Health would pay for. He wanted one, they wanted to do another.

I believe it's been sorted out.  Don't know how.

And what scenes have you seen? What script have you read? What actual proof do you have that they are being shoehorned?

People get old. Some of them not so gracefully. I am certain this also applies in galaxies far, far away.

Never said he looked bad, but rather he seems a bit fragile.  Lots of actors and actresses still kickin' in their 70s, cast free.  Just thought it was noteworthy that he's been photographed frequently wearing casts, slings, or the like in the last few years.

Considering that Mark Hammil was in a serious car crash in 1977 that basically broke his face, he's
holding up pretty well I think.

He'd make a decent fleet manager, or at least a lead tactician, or head up a pilot training program. You know, like in Top Gun.

I agree.  Given that it's Abrams running the show, and seeing what he did with Trek, there's a good chance that these movies are going to be 80% inside jokes and sight gags for fanboys instead of films that stand on their own merits.

Of course, they will still make tons of money, and I will still go to see them.

All of whom had some pretty serious acting chops. Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher don't. And Ford lost his charm years ago. He used to be fun to watch. He comes across as grizzly now.
