Ok, kid doesn't look like she put on 50 pounds. That pic they ran on the article makes her look much, MUCH heavier. Still, I can see why they didn't run these. Mom looks like a man in a dress. Nothing wrong with that, if that's what makes you happy, but I imagine it wouldn't make too many sympathetic to the kid, either.

log_jammin: I didn't read the article, but geeez...the dress was too short by the schools rules. let it go.

Um, actually, most school dress codes are "fingertip length" at a minimum. On the kid, it's far longer than that. It even meets many churches' standard of "no more than one inch above the knee while standing" (that's standing with both feet together) for the kid. It's possible that the issue isn't the skirt length at all, but the bustline. I might be a little iffy on it for a day of high school classes, but it's not inappropriate for most other uses for a 17 year old young woman.

Either way, she'd worn it about a half a dozen times throughout the school year without ever being sent home or warned about it--which you'd know if you'd actually read the article. That's why the parent had an issue. I would have too.

The school I teach at used our own football field this year for graduation (first time in a while from what I understand). It's much more cost-effective than renting a venue, and this is in an urban area.

But what does graduating on a football field have to do with being in Hicksville? That is what we are questioning, your correlation of having graduation on a football field and being a hick.

You know I always hate when people use the "I did it X number of times before and nobody ever said anything, why is it wrong now?". I don't even know why people try to use that if there is a clearly defined rule that is being violated. If you ask me it really does show stupidity and immaturity. If it is against the rules it is against the rules, it doesn't matter if she was able to get away with it before. You don't see drug dealers walking into court trying to use that as a defense. "Your Honor, I sold crack on that corner everyday for 6 months and the cops didn't say boo to me then, so I shouldn't be in trouble for it now. Case closed!".

If that's classed a 'short' dress, the teachers would have seizures over here in the UK where 13 year old school girls are wearing school skirts that just barely conceal the main entrance points to their bodies.

Seriously, subby. The sentence construction you're looking for is "too short a dress," not "too short OF a dress."

Similar examples:

"Too long an article"
"Too silly a statement"
"Too small a care"

Aigoo: log_jammin: I didn't read the article, but geeez...the dress was too short by the schools rules.

Um actually, you fail at measurements.  The skirt is a full 3" above the kid's knee which would not pass at any public school I attended, SC or MI.  I would agree a couple schools would've also been upset about the top half as not covering enough as well.  log_jammin didn't need to read it, the mom just has authority issues where it doesn't matter.

On a different note, I get the thought that if mom doesn't get fat, the daughter may not either.  However crazy levels should still be considered.

I hit the exact sweet spot for girl's clothing in high school. Rural Tennessee in the mid- to late-70s. Short shorts, halters, tube tops. A couple girls occasionally went barefoot to school. Nobody said a thing.

My high school had a teacher who wore skirts like that.  She also wore stiletto heels and liked to sit on her desk with her legs crossed.  Her class was very popular with all the guys who were, I'm sure, deeply interested in the history she was teaching.  I think they studied flags too as they discussed what color was flying daily.
She got fired for some reason, probably due to controversial historical views.

As for TFA, I'd say that the skirt being too short would be less of an issue than the neckline being rather closer to he navel than her neck.  But whatever, if you're getting that distracted by a little bewb or bootie you're probably doomed to die crashing your car when a hottie walks by...or to being a politician.

So, yeah, it goes without saying she wouldn't be wearing it to school anymore after that...

If the daughter is in reasonably good shape, and mom can fit in her graduating daughter's dress, it's fair to say that they're vain enough to not get fat.

My wife will not let herself get fat. Non. She looked at herself 2 weeks after baby #1 was born and said "you're watching her for two hours everyday while I go to the gym" without discussion. I didn't argue too much, okay not at all, because she did actually lose the "mommy pouch".

So much easier to stay attracted to an in shape wife.

Someone pulled the daughter out of the last day of classes for a dress code infraction?

I'm calling shenanigans on that.  Even if she was wearing something completely inappropriate, they would have had to put up with it for a few hours on a day in which there is no learning.

And if you think that dress is distracting, you might want to stay away from the JC Penny circular.  It leads to impure thoughts.

Same here; graduated in 1978 from a TN high school. IIRC the dress code for girls was they couldn't show a midriff, the skirts had to be no shorter than mid-thigh, and they couldn't show cleavage. There was a lot of leeway otherwise; one girl in my homeroom came to school in jeans so tight the teacher asked her if they were sprayed on. Another one came in with a frilly skirt that barely met the requirements, but no way could she sit down without showing everyone what color her underwear was. Then there were the halter tops and the cheerleader uniforms they wore on game day...

Back then, my clique -- the postpunks, proto-goths, new wavers, neo-hippies, and alternative types-- were the ones who wore dresses and skirts. ..And not just the girls, but some of us guys, too (I looked smashing in a long skirt and combat boots; Lots of female attention when I dared, and the school administrators didn't care.). Most of the girls in my clique wore skirts or dresses, often very elaborately designed or decorated ones. Granted, they also often wore combat boots, mohawks, razor blade earrings, spiked collars, and skipped wearing underwear when they wore long skirts. Still, back in those days the schools didn't get all upset over what students looked like, as long as they weren't blatantly obscene.

The preppies all wore Jordache jeans; `Not even faded ones (that wasn't "in" at the time), but dark blue and crisp. They also wore those hideous Izod shirts and over-bedazzled blouses. Blech.

Look at the kid's back leg, not the one that's kicked out. Could be the lay of the fabric or the angle of the shot, but on the straight leg, it looks long enough.

And again, taking into consideration that half dozen times she'd worn it that year without a problem, my guess is they chose a shiatty picture of the kid to show the length on her.

Also, don't look at the mom at all--she's several inches taller.

looks like her father, not her mother

The real question to ask is, "did anyone notice or care?" I'm betting the entire article exists because the mom contacted Yahoo to tell them the whole sordid, one-sided tale.

The mother crows about winning a "struggle" that, apparently, her opponents didn't realize was actually happening. This was worth of report by Yahoo.

No fan of stupid school rules but that is a pretty low cut.  I'm pretty sure if she leaned over it would probably give a full view.

Bendal: mbillips: Tellingthem: ChubbyTiger: lack of warmth: Aigoo: log_jammin: I didn't read the article, but geeez...the dress was too short by the schools rules.

Really? What kind of weirdo fundie school did you go to? Hell, our gym shorts were a good 6" shorter than that. Girls regularly wore mid-thigh skirts and nobody blinked. And don't even get me started on the cheerleader uniforms.

/I may be a little old
//good for the mom

I went to a public school and fingertip length was the rule (or two inches above the knee). No hats or shorts (except for gym). Small town Michigan. But that 20-30 years ago so I'm sure things have loosened up by now.

I hit the exact sweet spot for girl's clothing in high school. Rural Tennessee in the mid- to late-70s. Short shorts ...

go on...

bekovich: If that's classed a 'short' dress, the teachers would have seizures over here in the UK where 13 year old school girls are wearing school skirts that just barely conceal the main entrance points to their bodies.

They're wearing balaclavas?

gerbilpox: fusillade762: Is it just me or did her daughter pack on quite a few pounds between the time she wore that dress and graduation?

And about 20 years. That can't be the right picture.

Oh, here are some better ones. The daughter does look 17-ish and not roly-poly. The mom, um ...
