I wonder if CNN has anything to do with our division? Maybe framing everything as Republican vs. Democrat makes people think in an us vs. them manner.

Of course when your business model is "Well, John, I think your position on immigration reform is

cdn.ientry.com

Bieber!

I'm sorry, what were we saying again?"

It's kind of hard to actually get people thinking above an than us versus them level.

I'd say a bunch rich assholes brainwashing stupid people with lies is creating division.

so yes.

I don't think CNN led the charge on that, they just followed suit when they realized it was good for the ratings.

The GOP leadership divided this country when it kept insisting that elected Republicans only have to represent Republicans.

You know who else believed The Party was the only important thing? Hrundi V. Bakshi, that's who!

I do not see the politics tab to be devided.  I see great strides on the agreement that both sides are bad and the only way to correct this problem is to crush the other side so that you can hear the lamentation of their women and to allow for a more natural progression of their team instead of the need to break with dogma to get anything done.  It is a fairly universal idea and I think we would all do good to hitch our buggy up to the idea as a starting point towards universal agreement.

I think we all made an important step towards unity when we all agreed that Steve Forbes needed a cockpunching.

That's pretty good, Fark.  Two nearly simultaneous greenlights (link goes to the other one) on findings from the same survey.

Granted, TFAs are about two different findings, but still...

Still makes them at least partially culpable... I think the main offender is of course Fox News, but nobody held a gun to CNN's (figurative) head...

Not to defend any of the jagoffs... But news, at its very heart, is a for-profit industry. There's far more money to be made by dousing the flames in kerosene instead of water.

The bigger problem is a default perception that "news" and "information" are synonyms. Even worse, that "news" is somehow unbiased, but government-sponsored news is instantly perceived as propaganda.

It's true.  If you want reasonable and intelligent discussion on the public internet, Fark is the top of the heap.

Damning with faint praise, but it's still praise.

I've come to that realization after trying to read comments on sites like huffpost or dailybeast.

It's also why I've pretty much abandoned all other forum-style sites but stuck around here.

Though, admittedly, the fun-sized ninjitsu artist plays a part in that as well.

And yet it's my opinion that the Politics Tab poisoned the other tabs. Geek suffered every time there was a climate change thread, or when TechnoBevets had to rail against space exploration or 3-d printing. Sports dealt with shiat-flinging every time there was a Penn State thread.

Whiskey bottles go into desks?.... but that is grossly inefficient.  I mean taking out the bottle every 10 minutes or so is just a bare.

2014-06-16 11:48:20 AM
CNN gives equal time to crazy right wing positions and then they act like the positions have merit in an effort not to be part of the liberal media conspiracy.

2014-06-16 11:48:39 AM
If you're one of the news channels that refers to climate change as a "debate", then you're stoking the flames, and are in some degree culpable.

The problem with the news media as a whole is that they frame everything as a debate and try to give credibility to both sides of any specific issue.  Some things are facts.  Sometimes, one side is just flat-out wrong, and the problem is that the gigantic pussies in mainstream news media are too afraid to call a spade a spade.

By now, nobody doubts that FOX News is just a propaganda channel for the GOP, so the "liberal media" tag has lost its meaning to anyone but the diehard Republican base.  I feel like there's a significant portion of the American Public hungry for an objective news outlet with some real journalism.  I think Al-Jazeera USA does a good job at that but the name is too damn scary for "Real 'Murikans" to ever tune in and find out.

Different opinions are fine.  Lying about facts is not.  TechnoBevets, for example, would go so far as to blatantly misrepresent the contents of an article just so that he could continue to rail against 3-D printing.

Not to mention the teatards who insist that the Gadsden-waving cop-killers in Las Vegas must have been liberals because There Is No Such Thing As A Violent Conservative(tm).

This country has always been divided. 1939 would like a word, as would 1927, 1860 and 1790.

Stop the sniveling and realize that this is how we are.

FTFY

Although to be fair, there was at least one ancient culture (I think the Persian Empire?) where it was believed that the best ideas were those that made sense both while sober and while drunk.

I think the narrative was more like "well those cops must have done something to deserve it".

That Walmart is a few miles from my house.  The whole area is a powder keg to be honest.  Lots of Gadsden-waving loonies living right next to poor minorities.  Surprised they didn't shoot more civilians, considering their mentality.

I have to agree.  This is why:

1.  right-wing trolls tend to get everyone in such a lather here.  They know they've got an audience.
b.  people who actually BELIEVE some of the right-wing stuff and say so are labeled as trolls, because true believers on Fark are outnumbered by left-leaning types (the majority) and trolls.

Just my two cents.

I don't know, between my rampant socialism and fascist family, I believe that I represent a core group of Americans that are being under-represented in this R vs. D forum.

I also believe that colors are variant for each person, bunnies are evil, Che Guevara is the most successful troll in history, and Ulysses S. Grant had some good ideas.

Let's discus.
