Sausage pizza is the best pizza, but you have to find a shop that serves good sausage.  Most pizza joints use shiatty sausage and you end up with tasteless grease patches instead of a good pizza.

You have to pretty much go to Long Island to get really good pizza now. This my favorite slice from Umberto's of New Hyde Park.

shiat no surprise there. When I found out that pizza places put pineapple on their pizza i went crazy with that shiat. Best of all, my wife's allergic to pineapple so i never have to share my pizzas with her hahahaha. I still like sausage on my pizza though, I haven't totally phased it out of my diet yet.

Pineapple and artichoke, fine.  Ziti is weird.  Chicken has no business on pizza.  Beef, sausage (proper sausage, not that cheap nasty crap that tastes like burnt gristle), bacon, pile that shiat on.

Local joints around here are starting to get all international.  Pierogi pizza, butter chicken pizza, falafel pizza ... just, no.

Pretty much this.  There's plenty of bad pepperoni out there too, but it seems to be more consistent than sausage from pizza joints.

I prefer the crumbly sausage to the sliced sausage on a pizza.  It has to be good stuff though, with plenty of fennel seed and red pepper in the grind.

Sausage & green olives is a great flavor.
I love pineapple on pizza.

I have nothing to add. It's dough with sauce. Put what you want on it. Ain't no rules to this shiat.

Don't knock it until you've tried it. I had artichoke on a pizza at Antico Forno in Boston, and almost died from pleasure it was so good. Seriously, that was a good pizza. They call it La Capriciossa, and it has homemade sausage and mushrooms on there, too.

Hmm.  I like the idea of green olives on a pizza.  Black olives are bullshiat.  At least the ones from the can that pretty much every pizza place seems to use.

One of the ways I judge the quality of a pizza place is to order a pizza with mushrooms on it.  If they used the waterlogged canned mushrooms it's a safe bet that it's not worth a repeat visit.

They have to be good, fruit green olives, not the ones that are flavorless and just taste like salt. Either that or you really can't go wrong with kalamatas.

Agreed about the mushrooms.

Rockbottom Brewery has  (or did have, haven't been there for a while) an excellent house made Italian sausage pizza. I mean the actual restaurant, not the weird versions they have in airports like in MSP. That place is worthless.

I start with this:

www.traderjoes.com

(Of the three -- plain, wheat, garlic & herb -- the garlic & herb is the best)

I spread it out thin, so it covers almost all of a 11" by 17" baking sheet. Then I spread on a thin layer of marinara sauce, freshly chopped basil, good sausage, and thin slices of bell peppers, onions, mushrooms and black olives. Then I cover the whole thing with a generous helping of mozzarella cheese that will melt down and anchor the whole thing together.

Then I take it outside and cook it on my gas grill, with the lid down so it acts like an oven, for about 10 to 12 minutes. Using hickory chips to smoke the pizza makes it even more awesome.

I've tried using my Weber to cook pizza, but not being able to readily control the heat, like with my gas grill, makes it problematic. It's just quicker and easier on the gas grill.

bekovich: Artichoke in a damn pizza? I cuddle my England now.

My local (Albanian-owned) on Staten Island makes one with artichoke, spinach and Alfredo sauce. But, yeah, really a casserole on flat bread.

My friend in Hawaii says they have to have pineapple.

You know what sounds good, and is really disgusting? Pizza Hut's buffalo chicken pizza. Ranch sauce as the base. It pretty much tastes like nothing but salt and hot sauce. I know, Pizza Hut, what was I thinking?

Perhaps sliced olives and a few bits of tuna may have their place on a pizza. Underneath the bacon etc

I'm curious, does anyone not in chicago actually 'love' chicago style pizza? I don't think I've ever seen it sold anywhere. It's also known as deep dish, right? The only stuff I see anywhere, in any city in America I've ever been to, has either been generic (Papa Johns, Pizza Patron, etc.) or advertised as New York Style. I've never seen Chicago style anywhere.

There's the chain Pizzeria Uno that does Chicago-style deep dish all over the place.  They even have (had? I haven't seen in a while) a cold-case version you could take-and-bake available at grocery stores that was actually pretty decent.
