Unfortunately, the truly awesome iBot wheelchair was discontinued. The thing could balance on its rear wheels and the seat could be raised another 4 feet or so for accessing items high off the ground. The absolutely coolest thing about the wheelchair was its ability to climb stairs, yet it still had a footprint like that of a regular motorized wheelchair.

This was designed by Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway. A very cool invention, but expensive, and apparently you had to have a prescription from your doctor and get trained to use it...

The Segway was actually designed as a make-do product, to fill in while Kamen's company waited the many years it was going to take to approval from the FDA for the wheelchair as a "medical device".

I see I've already been beaten to the punch here.

It truely is a great piece of machinery. I got to play with a prototype a while back. It's a shame it got discontinued if what the other poster said is true. I thought it really was a revolutionary bit of technology for someone is disabled. But at the same time I was also thinking there is no way an insurance company would pay for one since currently wheel chairs are "good enough".

Hopefully DEKA has better luck with the Luke arm.

/interesting company to read about.
//Met Dean Kamen a few times over the years.
///Also a very interesting person.

Didn't know that... I think the Segway gets way more bad press than is deserved. I've seen people use them over the years in ways that would only work on them.
