Would that be a home run or an error?

I'd say E8.  Pagan knew he wasn't going to catch it on the fly so why he took that angle, I don't know.  It doesn't look like the ball had any funny spin when it hit in the OF.

ArkAngel: Would that be a home run or an error?

It's a good illustration of why errors are a largely meaningless stat.

Pagan took a ridiculous route to the ball and put himself in a position where he had no play.  Plus, they're in San Francisco where there's a massive alley in right center, so any ball that gets past him is going to roll for a while.  The game situation is two outs and a runner on first-- the CF can prevent a run and keep his team with a lead by just backup up and playing this cleanly.  Every coach, manager, player, and fan watches that play and knows Pagan turned a long single or short double into a home run.

But you essentially only get scored with an error if you touch the ball and screw it up from there.  So, because of the stupid way errors are defined, the batter gets a HR and the pitcher gets credited with two earned runs.

Those were a couple of pitiful throws. Was that Pagan in CF? He threw like a girl. The throw home wasn't much better.

Pagan took a bad route, and Pence took a bad route to back up the play.  Both went straight across for the ball instead of at an angle.  And both throws were weak.  That aside, great hustle.  Carlos Gomez would've only had a triple, then gotten into a shouting match with the pitcher afterward.

Prince Fielder has 2 ITPHRs, Rickey Henderson has none. Your argument is invalid.

The Mets traded Pagan for two guys who turned out to suck, while Pagan's gone on to be pretty good.

Still, I'm glad I no longer have to watch Pagan take stupid routes to balls and then throw them to the wrong base.

As a Brewers fan, I felt bad laughing at that second part. As I Brewers fan, I enjoy laughing at the Cubs.
