(Business Insider)   Chelsea Clinton's NBC salary: $26,724. Per minute...but you haters can suck it, because for that money we got a hard-hitting interview with the Geico gecko, and that right there is the kind of compelling must-see content you won't find on C-SPAN   (businessinsider.com ) divider line

I'm all set to be outraged here; I'm wearing my outrage pants; I've poured myself a *giant* glass of Outrage Lager; now, just tell me why I should be outraged and I'm all in.

Because that's all she did for NBC.

So, capitalism is ok until daughters of center-right presidents start getting that capital?

A double IPA would be more effective for getting hopped up on outrage.

That sounds suspiciously Left Coast/European/Socialist.

I'm not outraged, just sick of the Fifth Column getting so cozy with the people they cover by giving cushy jobs to them or their family members.

It happens all the time, not just in politics (look at the business news). Never been a huge fan of nepotism.

Meh... I don't care really.

I didn't even know Chelsea Clinton had a thing on TV.  However, I would be dumbfounded if she wasn't making quite a lot of money doing whatever she decided to do.

So?  That how you get rich.  Family inheritance or connections or both.

Useful skills or talent, not so much.  Working hard, not at all.

Sounds like a rags to riches story, seeing as how her parents were dead broke and all.

I'm sure the same people that are outraged about this were all over Sarah Palin getting $1 million a year from Fox. Of course, Palin is a well respected journalist so I guess she was worth it.

I knew what you meant, but I still don't get it. Is Chelsea's only options for a career to be "TGIFriday's waitress" or "Tech Line Monkey"? She was graduated from Stanford, Oxford and Columbia. *Any* job she would apply for with those credentials would take into account that she is the daughter of Bill and Hillary. It is literally inescapable.

No. It is what it is. You get a job and make money commensurate with who you are and who you know.

I understand that. It just flies in the face of all that libertarian bullsh*t we have to wade through.

Didn't you get the memo, Lionel? We liberals absolutely have to hate money.  It's like a crucifix to vampires, or something.

Is there some reason NBC shouldn't be allowed to pay whoever they want whatever they want? If NBC didn't get their money's worth, it's their problem and no one else's.

Yeah.  She showed up for work five seconds before the camera started rolling, and right afterwards she picked up her Starbucks and headed out for the rest of the day with her hubby.

/the fact that an editor didn't look at that piece of bullshiat and give him the Sheriff Tommy Lee "did your mom mastubate with spent nuclear poles from the local reactor" glare tells you all you need to know about American journalism today.

Famous person does some vague service for broadcasting company, gets paid lots of money.

Where am I supposed to be outraged?

2014-06-14 02:00:17 PM
$600k a year for a celebrity correspondent doesn't seem too absurd, given the money that CNN is making, but I question if there was really any consideration about the value a non-political relative of a former president could bring to the table.  Obviously not a lot, as they didn't have her on for more than a few minutes in the entire year.

2014-06-14 02:02:38 PM
I don't get this outrage. The people who defend CEO salaries tell me it's none of my business what a private company pays a private citizen.

2014-06-14 02:06:05 PM
I can certainly see the important political implications of this!

This.

It's the free market in action.

I've also been repeatedly told that a job is worth whatever someone is willing to pay.

What's the issue?

It's really, really important that we be outraged about this, because she's a Clinton.

Or something. I'm not really sure. Apparently nepotism and making money is only bad if it's a Democrat.

This makes perfect sense for NBC.

Like it or not, simply due to her birth (and the fact that unlike the Kennedy family, she's not a never ending train wreck), Chelsea is absolutely going to have people who will want to see her simply to see her. Just like movie stars, it doesn't matter much the movie that they're in, if people want to go see the star.

Yeah, it's terribly unfair. Life is. Deal with it.

How does this compare to Jenna Bush's contract? She's been with NBC for 5 years now.

Jenna Bush actually appears on NBC regularly. Doing not-serious stuff on the Today show and hosting the boozy fourth hour of Today whenever one of them takes a week off. She was at the Olympics too.

It doesn't appear to me that the story is crying foul about it. Just reporting a matter of fact.
