Farking New Guy: Is the Uruguay goalie stoned?

Well, he might be later, but in a different sense.

Those South Americans are fanatical about their futbol.

So prediction time: is Suarez gonna bite the dust when he realizes he's still not fit? Will he bit anything else?

2014-06-14 04:20:26 PM
These are the kind of things that make the World Cup great.

Costa Rica may end up not winning this game. But just imagine the bedlam going on around Costa Rican TVs right now.

Farking New Guy: Is the Uruguay goalie stoned?

Perhaps. Honestly, Muslera deserves to be in the conversation of best goalie in the world, but he probably gets to sit on his ass and do nothing for most games in the Turkish league.

Langston: ocirats: While we're waiting for the next match...

Stephen H. Webb on why soccer isn't catching on in the U.S.:   troll?  He also wrote an article in the WSJ in 2009, pretty much saying the same thing - I can't link it since fark won't let me, but easily found on google.

Soccer may well never catch on in the US to the level of the other big sports. People who like those sports already like them. The NFL and NBA have high scoring. The NHL has speed. The MLB has its strategy and statistics. I like watching those other sports and I like watching soccer, too.

Talking about why soccer "isn't catching on" is making the assumption that unless soccer has NFL numbers, it's failing. That's the wrong way to look at it. The US is a nation of over 300 million people. We have lots of youth with different skills and likes. One of the best things the MLS has done is task clubs to set up youth academies. Imagine if the US had even one or two academies like Barcelona's La Masia or Real Madrid's La Fábrica. The number of US-born players showing up and playing in top leagues against world-class talent will only increase.

The US is unlikely to follow that format like Argentina, Uruguay etc. It seems USASA wants a competitive league stateside rather than develop players for overseas leagues. Of course that's (exporting talent) going to happen though. The top athletes want to compete at the top levels. But I agree, soccer is catching on - slowly. Picking up brand name players just past their prime is a good strategy for the MLS for the time being. But the league must stay as competitive as possible to eventually attract the caliber of world class players here and abroad.

Red card coming for a Uruguay player. Seems they are getting hot.

Not great reactions on both goals. But, if you're wrong footed on hard hit shots, you have no chance to make the save.

It's one thing if you commit the other way, but it didn't look like he committed any way on either goal.

Nah. The first he didn't see the shot through his defender. By the time he did see it he was already beat. Some goalies will dive anyway in that situation, but it's for show. The second, well he was leaning to cover the near post and it went far post. Again, some goalies will dive, but it won't make a difference if you're leaning left and the ball goes right beyond arms reach.
He's a very good goalie generally.

RminusQ: Last futbol game I attended was a group stage match at last year's Gold Cup. I was sitting amongst fans of Costa Rica, and my self-preservation instincts and music-predisposed mind almost got me singing along to the eternal chants of "Ole ole ole! Tico! Ticooooooooo!"

Getting flashbacks right about now...

Hart: Johnson, Jagielka, Cahill, Baines; Gerrard, Henderson; Welbeck, Sterling, Rooney; Sturridge

5 Liverpool players, people. 5.

So that means England will pull ahead then lose at the last minute as Gerrard leaves the ball in midfield for the Italians.

It's an Everton and Chelsea defense (Cahill). They're OK there.

/7 players from Merseyside teams in that XI.
