After realizing that the Netherlands had a dolphin on their team, Spain quickly collapsed yesterday to give the Netherlands a 5-1 victory with 5 unanswered goals. In the underdog department, Australia gave up two within the first few minutes, but quickly pulled themselves together to give an unexpectedly impressive show, but were still unable to stop Chile from pulling off a 3-1 victory, but still able to gain a spot above Spain in their group. Cameroon and Mexico played against the refs, resulting in plenty of goals called for being offside, and a 1-0 victory for Mexico.

Today we've got 8th ranked Colombia against Greece (ranked 12), followed by 7th ranked Uruguay and 28th ranked Costa Rica. England (10) will face off against Italy (9) in what should be the best match of the day, but we stand the chance of seeing another crushing victory for one side. The Ivory Coast (23) will then finish off the night against Japan (46th)

How long until the US team gets crushed, and we can go back to ignoring the World Cup?

MmmmBacon: How long until the US team gets crushed, and we can go back to ignoring the World Cup?

They play their first match against Ghana on Monday which should prove to be interesting, but I think they're going to lose. I don't think they'll get crushed until the 22nd against Portugal, then have their dreams shattered versus Deutschland on the 26th.

I'm Ghana hope that Germany and Ghana get through, just to see both Portuguese and US fans crying together. It would finally cause the great flood and my ark will be useful.

I think the US won't take Ghana lightly again and will be busting ass for every moment of that game. The games against Germany and Portugal are longshots, which means if they want any points at all, it's gotta be against Ghana.

Had no farking clue what this headline was about until I got to the end.  And I was looking for the World Cup thread.....  Clearly I'm only a fan of futbol for about a month every four years.

I'm of Italian descent and can't stand the Italian national team. This might be the one time I root for England.

Last futbol game I attended was a group stage match at last year's Gold Cup. I was sitting amongst fans of Costa Rica, and my self-preservation instincts and music-predisposed mind almost got me singing along to the eternal chants of "Ole ole ole! Tico! Ticooooooooo!" but I resisted. And then Drek Shea scored so the US won and it was all good.

My picks today:
Columbia over Greece
Uruguay over Costa Rica
England draw Italy
Cote d'Ivoire over Japan

Today's trivia questions: With Spain's shiat-kicking yesterday, who now owns the longest current shutout streak at World Cup Finals? Among teams at this year's tournament, whose active shutout streak is longest?

2014-06-14 11:25:24 AM
I'm going to give it my all trying to enjoy all of today's matches.   Still, I can't believe the number of goals disallowed for offside calls yesterday, especially the one that was called off of a corner kick.

Fascinating...I've got the same picks, and I have no idea what I'm doing.

World Cup + fever probably equals insanity on my part, but here goes:

Greece draw Columbia
Uruguay over Costa Rica
Italy over England
Cote d'Ivoire over Japan

I was at work yesterday so I had to rely on the highlights to see everything. That was a terrible call. Does that assistant know the rules of the game!? It was a worse call than the 1st disallowed MEX goal because I've seen that situation called both ways (I think if there's a doubt, play on but I'm no expert). But calling offsides on that corner was just plain wrong.

Enjoy the games chaps. I'm off to Edinburgh for one of my occasional parties with ladies in fabby shiny outfits.

Even missing the Eng-Ita game.

I really wish I had taken a screenshot of the Fark pool standings yesterday morning after I correctly predicted Brazil 3-1 with the bonus chip.  Alas, it's all downhill from there, especially since I seem to have the same picks as pretty much everybody else today.

2014-06-14 11:37:48 AM
Also, I think the US team can qualify from the group. Unless they don't beat Ghana - which they should.

2014-06-14 11:41:27 AM
Has there been any word from FIFA on the two Mexico offsides calls from yesterday?  They were quick to defend the penalty in the Brazil game, but I haven't yet heard anything about those two, plainly wrong calls.

Love the Greek anthem. Love the Greek unis, too.

I think this match has the potential to be one of the barn-burners.

Of course, it will likely be 0-0.

One thing I've noticed in every game is players getting too fancy when they have the ball in the box.  They have an open lane for a goal, but rather than take the shot, they decide instead to try to pass it to another and possession is lost.

And again, players getting too fancy rather than just taking a shot, consequentially losing possession.  Samaras makes up for it with his effort just wide, but that's no excuse for the others not really taking a shot when the lane is open.

mootmah: dietbubba: kab: NHL raised the bar for ref incompetency last evening, lets see if World Cup officials have an answer for them today!

I missed the game but saw a lot of Rangers fans complaining.  What was it that was so bad?

Game-tying goal came off of a trip that was called on the wrong team.

Meh, there are bad, missed, or weak calls EVERY game for both teams.  Reffing is part of every sport.
The other team killed their share of penalties on bad calls and flops, Rangers failed to kill theirs.

RminusQ: Today's trivia questions: With Spain's shiat-kicking yesterday, who now owns the longest current shutout streak at World Cup Finals? Among teams at this year's tournament, whose active shutout streak is longest?

Answers: After allowing a 29th minute penalty to Italy, New Zealand went the rest of that game and all of a 0-0 draw with Paraguay without conceding, meaning they are on a 151-minute shutout streak. The longest streak by a team that is here also ended with a 0-0 draw to Paraguay; that team is Japan, riding a 129-minute without their opponents scoring into tonight's battle with Cote d'Ivoire.

First, he's an idiot. I don't like golf, but I understand it requires skill and practice and that sometimes amazing shots are have a lot of luck in them. Doesn't mean it isn't a 'real' sport. Speaking of golf, isn't that more 'old world' than not?

I agree with calling the foul on that challenge, but I'm not sure it was worth a card...and my feed broke up just at the whistle and the announcer claiming a PK.

That was the right call for the PK.  You can't wrap your arms around the guy, especially on a set piece like that.  Was it a dive?  Impossible to tell, you see the defenders BOTH arms hug the player and tackle him.

Not saying he can't get closer, but I applaud the cajones to take a shot from so far away.  You're right.  He should have gotten closer for a bigger target.  He might have actually put it on goal at that point rather than missing wide.

The US is unlikely to follow that format like Argentina, Uruguay etc. It seems USASA wants a competitive league stateside rather than develop players for overseas leagues. Of course that's (exporting talent) going to happen though. The top athletes want to compete at the top levels. But I agree, soccer is catching on - slowly. Picking up brand name players just past their prime is a good strategy for the MLS for the time being. But the league must stay as competitive as possible to eventually attract the caliber of world class players here and abroad.

Nah. The first he didn't see the shot through his defender. By the time he did see it he was already beat. Some goalies will dive anyway in that situation, but it's for show. The second, well he was leaning to cover the near post and it went far post. Again, some goalies will dive, but it won't make a difference if you're leaning left and the ball goes right beyond arms reach.
He's a very good goalie generally.

It's one thing if you commit the other way, but it didn't look like he committed any way on either goal.

Exactly, and he had time to turn his head and watch the 2nd one go by.....
oh well, back to the game, it's heating up!

I don't know that many predicted this, but let's not forget that in World Cup soccer there's not so much difference between the teams that the odd result can't happen fairly regularly.

And Costa Rica played really well in the Hex.  They kept it close against the US in that ridiculous snow game, beat the US 3-1 at home, drew Mexico at Azteca, and then beat El Tri 2-1 at home.  That's 7 points in 4 games against the top of their confederation.

Even Nate Silver gave them a 20% chance of winning this match.  That's not as small as it may seem.

Yeah, they're doomed.

We've not seen any goals from free kicks that might be attributed to the magic spray holding walls to their line, yet, have we?

iron de havilland: Trapper439: I've only read stories about how shiat the pitch in Manaus is. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

From what I've read it will be a bit like Arrakis on a rainy day.

They were painting it green the other day FFS.

I think both teams are OK with it though, because it's an equal disadvantage for both of them.
