After realizing that the Netherlands had a dolphin on their team, Spain quickly collapsed yesterday to give the Netherlands a 5-1 victory with 5 unanswered goals. In the underdog department, Australia gave up two within the first few minutes, but quickly pulled themselves together to give an unexpectedly impressive show, but were still unable to stop Chile from pulling off a 3-1 victory, but still able to gain a spot above Spain in their group. Cameroon and Mexico played against the refs, resulting in plenty of goals called for being offside, and a 1-0 victory for Mexico.

Today we've got 8th ranked Colombia against Greece (ranked 12), followed by 7th ranked Uruguay and 28th ranked Costa Rica. England (10) will face off against Italy (9) in what should be the best match of the day, but we stand the chance of seeing another crushing victory for one side. The Ivory Coast (23) will then finish off the night against Japan (46th)

How long until the US team gets crushed, and we can go back to ignoring the World Cup?

MmmmBacon: How long until the US team gets crushed, and we can go back to ignoring the World Cup?

They play their first match against Ghana on Monday which should prove to be interesting, but I think they're going to lose. I don't think they'll get crushed until the 22nd against Portugal, then have their dreams shattered versus Deutschland on the 26th.

I'm Ghana hope that Germany and Ghana get through, just to see both Portuguese and US fans crying together. It would finally cause the great flood and my ark will be useful.

I think the US won't take Ghana lightly again and will be busting ass for every moment of that game. The games against Germany and Portugal are longshots, which means if they want any points at all, it's gotta be against Ghana.

Had no farking clue what this headline was about until I got to the end.  And I was looking for the World Cup thread.....  Clearly I'm only a fan of futbol for about a month every four years.

I'm of Italian descent and can't stand the Italian national team. This might be the one time I root for England.

Italy: Buffon is out for today's match due to an ankle injury

Gahhh I'm working until 8. You farkers drink for me, and I'll see you for the 9 pm game, sober and ready for soccer

Last futbol game I attended was a group stage match at last year's Gold Cup. I was sitting amongst fans of Costa Rica, and my self-preservation instincts and music-predisposed mind almost got me singing along to the eternal chants of "Ole ole ole! Tico! Ticooooooooo!" but I resisted. And then Drek Shea scored so the US won and it was all good.

My picks today:
Columbia over Greece
Uruguay over Costa Rica
England draw Italy
Cote d'Ivoire over Japan

Today's trivia questions: With Spain's shiat-kicking yesterday, who now owns the longest current shutout streak at World Cup Finals? Among teams at this year's tournament, whose active shutout streak is longest?

2014-06-14 11:25:24 AM
I'm going to give it my all trying to enjoy all of today's matches.   Still, I can't believe the number of goals disallowed for offside calls yesterday, especially the one that was called off of a corner kick.

Fascinating...I've got the same picks, and I have no idea what I'm doing.

World Cup + fever probably equals insanity on my part, but here goes:

Greece draw Columbia
Uruguay over Costa Rica
Italy over England
Cote d'Ivoire over Japan

I was at work yesterday so I had to rely on the highlights to see everything. That was a terrible call. Does that assistant know the rules of the game!? It was a worse call than the 1st disallowed MEX goal because I've seen that situation called both ways (I think if there's a doubt, play on but I'm no expert). But calling offsides on that corner was just plain wrong.

Enjoy the games chaps. I'm off to Edinburgh for one of my occasional parties with ladies in fabby shiny outfits.

Even missing the Eng-Ita game.

I really wish I had taken a screenshot of the Fark pool standings yesterday morning after I correctly predicted Brazil 3-1 with the bonus chip.  Alas, it's all downhill from there, especially since I seem to have the same picks as pretty much everybody else today.

2014-06-14 11:37:48 AM
Also, I think the US team can qualify from the group. Unless they don't beat Ghana - which they should.

2014-06-14 11:41:27 AM
Has there been any word from FIFA on the two Mexico offsides calls from yesterday?  They were quick to defend the penalty in the Brazil game, but I haven't yet heard anything about those two, plainly wrong calls.

Ivory Coast better watch out, Keisuke Honda is GONNA GETCHA

I'm walking over to meet some friends from last summer's kickball league and watch the Colombia game. Should be back in time for URU-CRC.

2014-06-14 11:45:54 AM
No Buffon, eh? I think this is actually good for Italy. Sirigu is a better keeper anyway.

Since you won't be needing it, can we have your time machine?

I can't decide, do I stay at home and Fark and watch footie or do I go out and watch at a local theater that is showing on the big screen (and has a kick ass bar in it)

hmmm...just heard Italy's first string goal keeper is scratched from the match.  Not sure how this will affect the match or if I should change my prediction.

Love the Greek anthem. Love the Greek unis, too.

I think this match has the potential to be one of the barn-burners.

Of course, it will likely be 0-0.

Ah, the first match with an American ref.

I think I'll watch the first match at home and then head out.  I do want to watch the Ingerland match there

I'm wondering how well this will go for him, as well as the American assistant.  If he screws up, nobody gets to biatch about refs ever again ANYWHERE.

If one nation could afford to bribe, it sure as hell ain't Greece

Looks like another reasonably shiat pitch today for this one.

EVEN WORSE

Is the 4th Official from Mexico? Let's just get North America out of the way.

Columbia over Greece, Uraguay edging out Costa Rica, England and Italy draw, Ivory Coast over Japan.

I hope.

One of the announcers made mention that one of the assistants was Amercian, although I didn't see one listed either.  So yeah, I'm a bit confused too.

That has to be the slowest goal that will be scored in this World Cup

Tricksy Colombians! GOAL!

Blergh.

/first world cup match for me this year
//oooooh goal

That goal was pretty special. The set-up was fun to watch.

Follow through, Grecian dude!  Follow through!
