It's my GF'S birthday and it's 2:30am and I'm drunk. 6hrs till race coverage starts.

The broad will want a blueberry muffin when the Audi's are on the way to domination.

And I still have to shake-off hockey drunk.

Oohhhhhh man....

let's see how much of the race i get to see today.  i already know it;ll be down from the 20 hours i caught last year just because of the world cup being on.  why couldn't they start that next weekend?

Much as I'd really love to see the #2 atop the podium again, I don't think it'll be happening.  Toyota's got it down this year.

Between this and the WC matches later today, my kids are going to have to live without TV today...

not sure if they still use the radar, GM is having Callaway build the GT3 version, European GT3 racing are still all C6

rain time

2014-06-14 10:33:47 AM
So, judging from the results so far, it looks like Toyota finally has a car that doesn't suck.

I wish the Vipers were there. Hopefully, now that they're back under the Dodge banner, they'll be back next year - it doesn't feel right without them.

And with the now heavy rain, everybody goes full retard...and a Ferrari may have touched it off. Again.

2014-06-14 10:34:47 AM
way to go ferarri.  easy to go fast in the rain, but a lot harder to stop

2014-06-14 10:34:53 AM
Well a rather eventful beginning so far.  I love the rain even if it becomes rather expensive for teams.

2014-06-14 10:35:38 AM
Did that Ferrari take out two LMP1s in one shot? It's hard to tell with the typically horrible camera work/lack of angles.

2014-06-14 10:40:52 AM
seems like the toyota was sideways, but the ferrari did plow through the both of them

2014-06-14 10:41:02 AM
Check that - the Toyota may be at fault.

Unintended acceleration strikes again!

2014-06-14 10:45:04 AM
toyota going with the open wheel look.  maybe they can petition for their own class for the new body style

so the instigator goes on and the audi has to retire

2014-06-14 10:47:35 AM
That was just irresponsible driving considering the conditions.

2014-06-14 10:48:28 AM
toyota seemed to hit the guide rail and missed the audi and then the ferrari blasted the audi

2014-06-14 10:52:20 AM
It is tough to tell with lack of angles.  I think we can all agree the Ferrari was going a bit too fast for conditions and unable to maneuver when the incident occurred.

Announcers are already getting punchy on my feed.

Hate to root against anyone, but I'd rather not have a Toyota win. The maintenance crew would have to take down the banners bragging on Mazda being the only Asian manufacturer to win the overall.

On my stream they're interviewing the guy that installs in car cameras. I expect the hot dog vendor is coming soon. Also amusing that they're watching and describing the world feed yet showing something completely different.

crotchgrabber: On my stream they're interviewing the guy that installs in car cameras

That's the fun of Le Mans. At some point they have nothing to say about any car or driver and given the nature of the race regular racing commentary sputters out. So it's talk to whoever you can. The real fun is about 4 AM local time when the announcers just get totally silly.

It seems weird that the pit crew can just jump around and put hands on the car to push it in the garage.

Whereas when it's stuck on the course, we have to have the safety car circle the track and grab up some mechanics with high voltage gloves.

Well, no beer while there's racing going, at least for us, but...

NASA - National Auto Sport Association

Good amateur racing organization; my day consisted largely of sitting in a truck (or the air conditioned drag strip control room) waiting for cars to break and then towing them back to the paddock. If you want to watch, just show up at the track (our region charges $10 admission for the weekend). If you want to participate in safety, email your region's contact.

If you want to get out on the track, read up on the HPDE! (I wasn't doing that, but they had a special 45 minute period during lunch when people involved with the event in some way could go out behind the pace car for a few "parade laps").

What is this and can I come next time? The NASA thing that is. Mobile. Beer run.

Well, no beer while there's racing going, at least for us, but...

Hmmm. I'll think about it. I like volunteering for fun stuff. It sounds fun.
I've gotta put in a seven day week for SCCA run offs this week.

Who won the truck race?

According to my feed, the lead Toyota vanished from the face of the earth and has yet to finish the third sector of it's 219th lap for the last 15 minutes. Now, techno!

Bubba Wallace.

It looked like John Hunter Nemechek had a legit shot, but Germain Quiroga in the 77 got together with him and cut his tire down.

Then it looked like Erik Jones in a KBM car was going to win, but Germain Quiroga in the 77 got together with him off the corner after he bobbled slightly. Didn't lift and spun him from the lead into the inside wall.

Then Bubba and the 77 battled it out, and Bubba pulled it off right as the 77 was closing on his rear bumper.

Unfortunately, the front stretch stands only looked about half full, and the stands in the turn were completely empty. I fear you just called it. Another track that puts on great races, but just fails to attract a sustainable crowd.

It's hard for a track to get the right date for their track. Notice that no tracks are running a second or third tier series on Memorial Day Sunday. Le Mans doesn't help. Anything happening in St. Louis this weekend? Even a good baseball match up can kill it. I like Gateway. I want them to succeed.

I heard a tech piece on it earlier. It's 4-8 bolts and a really stubborn quick release, depending on the car. Oh, and some temperature.

Porsche LMP1 having problems. Undefined. the Corvette mentioned earlier with the door, which turns out to be the illuminated number. The announcers on my stream must really be tired because they're begging people to send in demo tapes to become announcers.

I was weak, I went to bed.  But hooray for the #2 in the lead, despite my pessimism earlier!

Watched Truleyer and Lotterer in FNippon and JGTC/Super GT when I lived over there.  Great to see a couple of guys who were overlooked at home work their way up into the bigtime.

This is the first time in a looooong time that I can remember the P2 division being more robust than P1.  It used to be 'last men standing' in that class.

Definitely a fun race. Lots of back and forth drama. I can't wait to see what LMP1 will have to offer in the future if the rumors of more manufacturers jumping in pan out.

Something else just clicked with me....the 3rd place car was the one that was splattered against a barrier in the 1st hour of the race.

I freaking LOVE Le Mans.

And I need to make coffee.

Whoops. Word is the #14 Porsche got itself DQed by running afoul of some minimum average speed reg by going out there and tooling behind the leaders on that final lap.

Wait, what? I had to step away from the broadcast, at present all I see online is video from a helicopter overhead and a text comment saying #14 Porsche finished 11th overall...

IIRC, there's a couple rules in place to prevent cars from parking, getting to a barely drivable state, and limping around for the last five-ten minutes in order to record a finish, or worse yet, stopping just short of the finish line for hours and limping across after the winner. I think the one they ran afoul of requires a maximum lap time of six minutes on their last lap (the #20 shows 7:45, the #14 shows almost an hour and a half).

The #50 Larbre looks to have gotten caught out by this as well.
