Was the cop caught in a headlock, struck, and then trampled?  Because those seem like valid injuries, but I don't see anyone other than the police spokesperson claiming that there is video of that.

Not to mention:

trampled and hurt so badly he suffered back injuries and needed hip replacement surgery and operations on both knees

Hardly minor injuries.

Yeah. On second review his injuries are more than serious enough to justify disability. He didn't get it for actually punching the hippie, it was the related injuries he sustained.

Granted, if he hadn't been injured, he should have been dismissed with prejudice for punching a citizen.

So, he punched a hippie and was crippled for life?

Win-win for everybody!

If you're a cop, and you sustain injuries while assaulting protestors, you should get federal disability like a regular joe. At the moment, it's about 10% of what this asshole is getting.

Oftentimes that's not the case, so I don't blame anybody for being skeptical. When it comes to the NYPD, FDNY and MTA workers in particular, the definition of "disability" has turned out to be most elastic indeed.

Sid_6.7: trampled and hurt so badly he suffered back injuries and needed hip replacement surgery and operations on both knees

The guy is 50.

I know plenty of 50 year-olds who need help replacement surgery and knee operations. Here's the thing. You need your hip and knees replaced after a lifetime of wear-and-tear. You don't magically wear out your hip in one event.

He had back injuries, and he had hip and knee problems. You get this if you live an active life for 50 years, as I'm sure many cops do. Punching a hippie was his path to getting 120k/yr tax-free for the rest of his life. And you know who pays his lottery winnings? Overwhelmingly, our tax burden is on people in the lower economic bracket... you know, the very protestors he was punching.

Given the dude had to get so much reparative surgery that he woke up on the table asking where Padme was, I would venture he's not faking it.

And I would add that calling anything resulting in that level of injury anything other than a 'riot' is a bit silly, I'm not sure why TFA was dancing so nervously around the word.

// Seems like the department actually agreed that the punch in question was out of line, or at least not unambiguously justified enough to defend in court, because they settled.  The injuries weren't from the guy he hit, though, they were from the small riot that followed.  Which is a legit disability claim, I'd say.

To be fair, considering this guy is living in a commune in Tennessee, he probably isn't paying those taxes.

I'm fine with giving this dickhead his disability money, but only if each year, the day before he gets his disbursement check, the Occupy crowd gets to show up at his house and kick the shiat out of him again.

But since it was his punch that instigated the riot, does it follow that the injuries he sustained were his own fault, possibly the result of his own criminal act? (The punch should have earned him a battery charge, IMO, as it was totally uncalled for.)

This. This so much. I see this garbage with work comp cases all the time. Some jackass strains his back lifting without proper technique, goes jn and gets an MRI which shows degenerative disc disease and discs bulges (which are NORMAL FINDINGS in anyone over 35,) and wants compensation.

Since this is a NY(C) story, that's not nearly as true. Thanks to the state and city governments being bloatfests, pretty much everybody gets farked by the taxmen - but far as income taxes go, one out of every six dollars that goes to Albany is coming from the 140,000 or so who work Wall Street-type jobs. That's before city taxes. The amount varies from year to year depending on how the markets went and the size of the bonuses, but the financial-services industry is the only thing keeping New York from going full Detroit (although Newburgh did go full Detroit anyway).

No, only cops get to enter the current hippy-punching payday. I'm saying if you open it up, everyone gets to play and win!
Got to keep it one to a customer, though, both for puncher and punchee, or it'll spiral out of control. We can tag the hippies who've already been punched.

How long before the hippy communes break down as everyone punches each other? And then they'll have the funds to make an even better one!
