Guys, the Daily Caller figured it out. Volcanoes exist, so global warming can't be real.

Obama's plan continues to perfection. His weather manipulation machine and its effects remain unnoticed.

That's pretty cool (or, I guess, hot in this case).

...But it doesn't disprove anything about the broader system.

HAHA, Suck it, Coastal Elites!

And by "suck it" I mean ocean water.

This doesn't disprove global warming, but it disproves that global warming is causing this ice sheet to melt, which is what all the scare stories about it said.

Why are we getting Daily Caller BS links in the geek tab? I know climate change is science but I doubt anything the Daily Caller uses can be considered science. Keep this bullshiat in the politics tab.

submitter's headline is fine, but TFA's headline is not ("West Antarctic Glacier Melt Due To Volcanoes, Not Global Warming").   Neither the scientific paper nor the authors' press release attribute the Thwaites retreat solely or even primarily to geothermal heat flux.  They just say that the geothermal flux is higher than previously supposed.

How come I haven't heard the trumpeting that "2013 was the hottest year on record?" How come I haven't heard"6 of the last 10 years were in the top 20 hottest on record"? Because it doesn't count if we have global colding.

A sci-fi plot come to life...

Near the end of "Green Mars" (Kim Stanley Robinson), a series of volcanic eruptions causes a collapse of the western Antarctic ice sheet, providing a catalyst and distraction for an independence movement to take control of Mars.

Even the predicted amount of sea level rise is fairly close, IIRC.

Go on defending a shoop combined with a misrepresentation of a Time article. That really makes you seem smart.

Interesting.  Apparently the paper doesn't even say, "climate change isn't affecting this" or even that "all the melting is happening for geothermal reasons", it's saying "the region of geothermal flux under the glacier is more widespread than originally thought."  It doesn't seem to detail how much difference in melting would factor in or even if this means climate change would alter the factor it affects this glacier melting.

TL;DR, PR firm for oil companies spends a few more bucks.

Well, that's good.  We're able to infer that global warming is entirely false because of a study on one instance of geological warming that is contributing to faster melting of the glaciers in the antarctic.  I know the authors of the paper didn't discard global warming or even mention it because clearly their results just sort of explain the whole thing.

Came here to say this.  I read the paper (it's only 3 pages) and the supporting documentation.  At no point do the 3 authors make anything close to the claim that all the right-wing/denialist seem to be making.  The key point that they were making was that this particular area close to the ocean had more geothermal activity than previously mapped and could be an explanation for why the ice sheet was tearing apart in that region at a rate faster than other areas.

BTW, the Thwaites Glacier area is a fraction of 1% of area covered by the Western Antarctic Ice Sheet.

At NO point in the article did they make any claims regarding geothermal activity being a primary or contributing factor to ice melt, they simply didn't address it all.   So any claims to the contrary originated not from the article itself, but from bloggers/derpers who are making sh*t up out of thin air.

http://www.nasa.gov/press/2014/january/nasa-finds-2013-sustained-lon g- term-climate-warming-trend/

From the link: "NASA scientists say 2013 tied with 2009 and 2006 for the seventh warmest year since 1880, continuing a long-term trend of rising global temperatures."

Global cooling is not currently happening so I don't understand your last sentence.

2014-06-13 10:03:05 PM
Wait, I thought the current denier argument was that the Antarctic ice sheet was growing.  At least, that's what the Daily Caller told me last month.  So what is it: growing due to global cooling or shrinking due to volcanoes?

2014-06-13 10:30:21 PM
Is today the day we trust scientists? Because I keep hearing that there's a worldwide conspiracy to fake global warming. One day no scientists can be trusted, the next day even the slightest possibility a scientific paper could maybe sorta kinda barely undermine AGW if you misunderstand it's content is jumped on like the gospel truth. It's all so confusing.

We don't know, but with enough lobbying, scientists will surely see our side of things and give up their blasphemous research.

If an old Daily Caller article contradicts a new Daily Caller article, then the old Daily Caller article must be a hoax.

2014-06-14 01:00:36 AM
But for the 345'th time this was evidence that the scientists were lying! The previous 344 fell apart upon immediate inspection, but dammit, this was going to be the one!
