Lars looks far more like Michael Keaton than he does Will Farrell.

I think my 5 year old can drum better than Lars. That entire band has just went to crap, especially live.

Live is where they really shine, regardless of what you think about their recent cds.  i saw them on the first night of the Death Magnetic tour and I was actually shocked at how well Lars was playing.  Those new songs aren't easy and he was holding his own just fine.

Of course, that's relative to his own playing of course.  Charlie Benante from Anthrax is a hundred thousand times the drummer that Lars is or ever was.

Since James blew his vocals out and Jason left, I have been just extremely disappointed in every show I have went too. Even anything I hear online that is recorded live just sounds like shiat to me now.

I don't anymore. Been many years since I have seen them. I think after they started the DM tour I said no more.

Music isn't a contest. "More notes" =/= "better notes". It's what fits for the song/band.

If a drummer does a really basic 4/4 beat that supports a song, then Neil Peart bee-boppin' and scattin' all over the place just won't work for that song.

I think Lars on Master Of Puppets was powerful and innovative:

I personally see it as their earlier stuff was done when they were young, drunk, angry and broke and that's what fueled a lot of their earlier music. Now they're rich, mostly sober, old, married and whatnot. They just don't have that base of anger or aggressiveness to draw from anymore, and that's fine. They aren't really metal anymore and they've kinda stuck with regular rock/hard rock now which I can still appreciate. With some notable exceptions *cough* St. Anger *cough* Lulu *cough*, I've liked much of what they've put out. I do think they should have skipped the double album bit with Load and Reload and put the best tracks from both onto a single album.

There are many reasons to hate him, none of which have to do with his drumming.

I don't the inclusion of Lars in this bit. Ferrell and Smith actually do look alike. Lars is a foot shorter and has a pig face.

Master of Puppets Lars was Best Lars.  The whole band seemed to go in so deep on Justice that they completely recoiled from metal altogether since.

Lars Ulrich is a huge toolbag but the man can play the drums. Is he the best in the world? That's subjective (he isnt) and not the point. He is many things but a bad drummer is not one of them.

Since the focus is on technical drumming these days, drummers have lost the sort of organic soul they used to have. I mean Moon, Baker, Mitchell, etc all were great drummers, but people put them down now because they aren't "technical" enough. Then why do they sound better?

They might sound better because they were playing on better songs than what gets churned out nowadays.  Everything sucks now.  RocknRoll peaked in 1973.
