"There are two novels that can transform a bookish 14-year-kld's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish daydream that can lead to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood in which large chunks of the day are spent inventing ways to make real life more like a fantasy novel. The other is a book about orcs."

I remember in one of my ethics classes at college, one of the students asked "Will will be learning about Randian objectivism?" or something along those lines. The professor responded with "This is a class on ethics, so no. Greed is good is not an ethical philosophy, its an excuse for selfishness."

Adolf Oliver Nipples: All candidates are backed by shadowy billionaires, though to be fair his campaign spending didn't exactly demonstrate that. And why would this be scary? He destroyed a senior Republican representative and reduced his state's seniority to zero. Nobody is going to listen to him, he is powerless. And now, so is Eric Cantor.

I don't know who is backing Brat if anyone but all the money spent on an anti-immigration PSAs didn't get captured in the campaign funding comparisons between Cantor and Brat.  It is almost impossible to figure which money went where anymore but to say Brat's $200K (?) was what he beat Cantor with is naive to say the least.

Just don't let any Darkies or Poors get their hands on any of it, right Ayn?

She didn't write books denouncing social security. She wrote them to denounce looters and leaches.

Which is very much how the right wing views the whole welfare/Social Security/Medicare thing.

I have read both. Both are horrible pieces of fiction. It is Badly structured, Repetitive and unrealistic. If that is your idea of a masterpiece than, well, I don't know what to say.

I remember leaving this gem on an Audible "recommendation" of Atlas Shrugged on my Facebook page. Wow, do Randians get easily hurt.

Well, nearly all of Rand's major novels are her superheroes biatching and complaining about other people.

MJMaloney187: thehobbes: MJMaloney187: Atlas Shrugged and Fountainhead are masterpieces. But if you want to understand where Ayn Rand was coming from, you have to read We The Living. I suspect most people who rip on Ayn Rand are just going with the crowd. I can't imagine someone slogging through 1000+ pages of her work and walking away hateful. That doesn't make any sense.

Ayn Rand died on Welfare

Was it ishkur or comalitej who wrote the great breakdown of Randian philosophy?

Oxygen is welfare. I don't know anything about the Randian philosophy (except what was presented to me through her characters), so I can't answer your question. I liked her books and I think I'm a better, more well-rounded reader for having read them.

How can you read Ayn Rand novels and say you know nothing about her philosophy? If you really got what was presented "through her characters" as you put it, then you should know her philosophy quite well. It's presented in a very ham-handed fashion in her books, which is one of the reasons they suck.

lockers:
When I am trying to sell you this in the form of a book, I will hire an editor to fix up my worthless schlock just like Ayn.

Her books aren't worthless. They have negative value. They've helped many an ordinary person become more of a selfish asshole than they might have become on their own.

MJMaloney187:  So you don't do volunteer work, huh? I generally don't either, but I have a thing for simpletons,  so here.  More than 7 million copies of Atlas Shrugged have been sold since its publication.

Yawn.

"Who Moved My Cheese" sold 26 million copies.

"The Happy Hooker" sold 20 million copies.

Hell, even "The Poky Little Puppy" sold over twice as many copies as "Atlas Shrugged."

Personally, I find it heartwarming that the garbage Rand wrote has seen such little intellectual purchase.

Also interesting that among the few things in Bowe Bergdahl's possession when he disappeared was a copy of Atlas Shrugged.

He didn't go Jihadist, he went Galt.

Randianism (or as they like to call it, Objectivism) is for all practical purposes a cult.  They think they understand everything about how the world works, and anything that contradicts their "understanding" is automatically and violently dismissed as blasphemy.

Actually, we know exactly who has been backing Brat: Brat is currently serving as the director of the "BB&T Moral Foundations of Capitalism program" at his college. The program was founded by the former CEO of BB&T Bank, John A. Allison IV, who is also currently President of the Cato Institute. I'm not a big fan of any of these people, but I'd hardly call them "shadowy".

Although this does make one wonder, why would the Cato Institute be backing a candidate running against immigration reform as his main issue? They're theoretically libertarian, and supposedly were the brains behind GWB's immigration reform plan.

This wouldn't be the only weird contradiction about Brat - he writes about Ayn Rand a lot (probably because he's backed by a Randian), and supposedly approves of her philosophy (although he distances himself from the "Randian" label), but as a former theologian he also produced writings about how Protestant Christianity is the moral foundation of capitalism. Presumably he's disregarding all the "objective" parts of Rand's Objectivism, like her atheism.

Also, he seems to write a lot of essays denouncing crony capitalism, while working for a foundation created by a bank that took $3 billion in bailout money in 2008.

Garet Garrett: So "dark money" is code for "no actual money"?

Let me get this straight:  this was a victory for the millioniares and billioniaires on the right like the Koch Bros. because somebody who shares some of their views had made a grant to a university that enabled it to hire Brat as a professor, who spent less money on his entire campaign than Kantor did at steak houses, and whose number 1 donor was an auto body shop.

9/11 truthers have more going for them.

As was pointed out above, PAC spending of the "non-coordinating" kind doesn't show up as candidate spending.  I have no idea how much was spent on anti-Cantor ads by people/PACs that were not directly Brat-linked.

Or how much spending of that kind was undertaken by pro-Cantor PACs, for that matter.  Perhaps someone from the area could tell us what TV has been like in recent weeks in terms of political ads.

He is now, or he was before and the billionaires only gave him like $5 since he spent basically nothing on his primary campaign?

Does he have lots of steakhouse money now?

Ayn Rand was a coont who wanted everyone to be as miserable as she.

(Yes, she. Proper grammar looks wrong sometimes, huh?)

So if you want friends who rationalize callousness and stinginess, have at them. They're easy to find as they plaster helpful bumper stickers to identify them. As if they voluntarily complied in a country-wide tracking program. ;)
