We had a quail get stuck in our fence once. He got a leg caught and was hanging upside down. I didn't even take a chance, I grabbed a towel and had one of my stepsons come out. I wrapped the bird, and then had him pull the fence board forward enough to get the bird free. I set him down on the ground and backed off before taking the towel away. Falcons would make me even more nervous.. Hell, this was a quail that had twisted one leg, and broken the other off in the fence, and I still didn't want to get all scratched up.

sent that to my brother.  he said it was a European kestrel.  He got a degree in ornithology and used to spot bird types from a ridiculous distance just on silhouette.  cute bird nonetheless.  the staring contest was awesome.

My mom told me a lot of lies in my youth, but the two things that were worth listening to are:

1. Don't touch birds.  They are covered with bird lice and other such disgusting diseases.

2. Don't touch birds.  Mommy bird is going to murder baby bird because it now smells like you.

That was the same look i had on my face when i saw the hand stretch out towards a distressed raptor. Glad we got to see some cool footage, but holy hell is that a great way to lose blood. I wouldn't have gone near those guys without full arm welding gloves on.

At least some leather garden gloves. I am surprised no blood was shed.

Some people just have 'the look'
I've met people like that - animals just know they should behave around them
It's cool

Bird flies into office, everyone spends an hour trying to get it, then
One particular person walks in, looks at the bird, the bird immediately flies out of the room
Some people really do have that vibe - I sure don't

This is bullshiat.  Same with touching eggs or nests.  The bird can probably smell you, but if it can't see you present it doesn't give a shiat because it's a BIRD.  It's maternal instinct is also much stronger than it's survival instinct, so it's not going to push it's eggs out of it's nest or murder it's babies because they've been tainted by manflesh.

This. That's a total myth. Put one more thing your mom told you into the "lie" category.

I've always wondered what an animal or insect is thinking when they do that.  Why do they keep trying again and again, not getting it that there's something there not allowing them to go where they want to go?

I don't think there's much in the way of "thinking" going on.  It's mostly just they don't understand that there's something preventing them from getting through.  Kind of like how a cat will attack a mirror when it sees its own reflection.

Gloves would have been smart.

I handled a trapped feral cat once. Farker bit me on the hand and boy can those wild jaws squeeze. Hurt like hell, but the work gloves I was wearing saved me from puncture.

Lack of reasoning and now there's 3 examples of it here.

Had a hummingbird fly into our house a few years ago.  After 20 mins of trying to herd it out a window I just grabbed it had took it outside.  Was so amazing holding it.  I could feel its heart beating through my finger tips.
