I see bands of chartreuse rings in between the bands of black rings.  The center parts of the rings are a darker green than the periphery.

If you see a color that is not there it means your brain is easily overloaded and does not compute at high speed. It could also mean your are gulliable, pray to invisible things in the sky, eat fortune cookies for answeres to life , practice homeopathy and read daily horoscopes.

Of course I'm just pulling this out of my ass to troll and upset you.

Lime green and teal, the teal is when it falters or slows down. As i saw the primary colors as it was loading. I saw it loading because I have shiatty comcast internet.....

Zel: This is just amazing that so many people have reported so many different colors. I tried two monitors and got the same result, a forest/olive main color, and after a while the negative space becomes relatively magenta, but primarily a deep green chasing the black lines.

When I spin that up to 400 RPM or so, I start to see a variety of colors in the black tracer lines- going outside to inside it goes:

3 black
1 blue
2 light purple
3 green
3 magenta

That's cool in itself, but the freaky thing is that when I hit the reverse button, the order of the colors flip. I still see the same colors in the same positions, but from outside to inside I see:

3 magenta
3 green
2 light purple
1 blue
3 plack

Light purple, like lilac.

I see a fluorescent greenish-yellow purple.

I end up seeing a sort of flower starburst spiral thing, but no colors.

Must be something broken in my head too.

Zel: kriegsgeist: I bet it's different sampling frequencies for different photoreceptors in different people. Could also have something to do with the radial distribution of receptors from the center of the eye.

It would be easy to test the sampling frequency hypothesis by making small changes to the frame rate, and seeing if the colors an individual saw changed.

I downloaded the GIF to see if it's got any colors, or how to increase the smoothness, this GIF is a very low frame-rate, choppy and epileptic.  Searching for a flash version with better FPS, I found this
http://www.michaelbach.de/ot/col-Benham/index.html
With adjustable rotational speed.
The colors I see don't change from 100RPM to 300RPM. Below 100 it's clearly black and white, must be my brain's refresh rate.
At negative RPM you can get the primary and secondary colors to switch places, This app has a reverse button to do just that.

My colors didn't change across two monitors and ranges of speed, and I'm shocked that so many colors are reported, only a small handful agree with me that it's dark green.

At about 320rpm I get three rings of red in the centre and three rings of dark green before the rest are black.  If I up the rpm to about 450rpm, I get an extra ring of red, three rings of yellow, and all the rest except the last are dark green.

2chris2: Handsome B. Wonderful: I'm seeing black and white.

I also see black and white.

Where is this color appearing, for those who see it?

I (finally!) saw some color on the thin stripes about halfway out. In my case, a pale lavender.

2014-06-13 02:55:28 AM
i noticed that different colours appear when focus on a particular ring, but if focus on black part, its a Beatles record.
Then after 2 min, the colours alternate rings or change each revolution, there seemed to be about 6 or 7 at that point.
a lot of the colours looked like the ones i was going to trim the house with...

i figger that white has all the colours and its just a case of imagination.
staring at something as boring as that is a mini sensory deprivation exercise.

I see a sort of sea green closest to the black rings and red in between the greenish parts.

my brain was doing those adjustment functions you did with flash.
I s'pose thats because i wanted to get something out of the d/l & 2 1/2min of staring at a beatles record.

At the very least it displays how your attention corrupts, I think it has more to do with ones self considered option of 'scone-science'(subconscious development of an 'ordered consciousness') versus your memory aperture designated for segments of perception of the requirement for fight versus flight,  combinedwith the ambient subconscious's ability to designate patterns and the ability of the consciousness to identify and recollect 'glancing maizes' of the very idea of color.

Could the color configuration of the screen or monitor that the particular person is using contribute to the different shades that one sees? You sometimes sees screens where the white can be tinted yellow, or even blue.

I tried shifting the color from red to blue and it didn't change the color I saw at all.
I saw sort of a burnt orange.

That would involve pupil coordination versus light intensity saturation, your 'perception' of the colors tends to make those kinds of variable attributes, an ambient static background.

Dark green for me. Weird.

I'll try again tomorrow, see if it changes. Gotta try it on my color-blind cousins, too...

SearchN: Kind of wondering this one.. But do the people that see the colors game a lot? Same question for those that don't.

I game a fair amount and am a digital artist. And I didn't see anything other than a black and white spinny thing that as basemetal said, is highly likely to fark with any epileptic not on good seizure meds (which reminds me, it's time to take mine).

HawgWild: I didn't see another color. Am I broken? Or perhaps it means I'm not racist?

HawgWild: Okay, seriously. Where the heck are you supposed to see the colors?

Ishkur: Do I stare at the edges where its spinning fastest, or the middle? Does the colour appear when you look away (like other optical illusions do) or what? I'm not getting anything. How long am I supposed to stare at it.

I'm getting a headache.

SearchN: Weird. All that I see are patterns within both images. No colors.

et al

A physical spinning-top version works better. I have one made of wood (not with me at the moment unfortunately) which turns the broken arcs into a muted earth-toney color spectrum when you spin it. As I remember, the colors intensify a little as the top slows down, and their order is reversed if you spin the top the other way. It actually is a rather interesting effect.

I agree with this entire post.

It seems to depend on the pattern and speed what the effect is. Perhaps also on the monitor. On my computer, now, the wikipedia version has blue patterns interspersed with a drab green (as opposed to the 3 clear colors on my iPhone). The interactive one has 4 colors in 4 clear bands at higher speeds (from ~250rpm up), 3 red stripes on the inside, followed by 3 olive green, 3 lilac, and 3 blue. At 150rpm only the inside 3 rings show a dark red.

Really a weird thing.

NateAsbestos: Because we're all looking at it on different monitors?

I mean, in a proper scientific experiment that would be controlled. Maybe they did that, but this is a Daily Fail link so I'm not going to bother reading to find out.

This, between cool and warm tints, and differing environments, our(internet viewers) actual experience with it is worth absolute dick.

Ideally it may be analog, like looking at a spinning record.

I can see where rapid rotation could cause a hue shift and/or differing personal reactions(the way the stutter in fluorescent lighting really stands out to some and others don't notice it.

Also depends on what people's eyes are currently adapted to.  If someone stares at a red scene for a long time, and another stares at a lushly green scene, they'll likely perceive different colors.(ie when the view is replaced the opposite of the spectrum will tend to appear)

Lastly, when presented with instability, our minds will attempt to fill in the blanks.(ie the quickly flashing faces that appear monsterous and a plethora of other visual phenomenon)

I only see the black and white. I have a weird vision impairment, so maybe that's why I couldn't see any color?

2014-06-13 06:54:34 AM
Took a full minute of staring at it before I saw anything. Then, I saw (in order, center out): black, yellow-brown, green, yellow-brown, red, yellow-brown, black.

2014-06-13 07:05:15 AM
Inside to out I got a very deep vibrant green, a desaturated version of that, a desaturated version of the outside ring, and a very grape jelly purple with a little red. Inverse in reverse.
I had to bump it to 250 to start seeing it, but after my brain got it I could see it on slower ones still. It was also still colored if I couldn't see the whole circle. I'm on mobile and zoomed in to hit the arrows, so I could only see 1/4 of it.

2014-06-13 07:08:01 AM
I only saw yellow :(
