dark purple

2014-06-13 12:12:52 AM
I see patterns of light brown and darkish purple, and the colors are quite vivid.  Can't make the colors go away.

2014-06-13 12:14:12 AM

Langston: Bill_Wick's_Friend: Dark almost-brown yellow. Like the colour of a really old spicy mustard.

That's the one I'm getting, too

Impossible.  The headline says that everyone sees something different.  How could you both see the same thing?  Headlines don't lie.

I saw the lithesome naked form of a young Jean Kasem, sprawled out on the back of a majestic white steed galloping across the plain with flames shooting out her nostrils.

How do I know when you see the color blue it's the same as when I see the color blue...

2014-06-13 12:16:59 AM
I saw a pink dragon with purple polka dots and long pointy teeth.

But that might have just been the LSD.

I get nuttin... black and white only....but this worries me because i understand doctors use Benhams Top to diagnose neurological disorders.   Those of us who only see the non illusionary black and white, must be remarkably free from self deception.

No wait... Yes, I can see it now.  The emperor IS wearing a fine set of new clothes.  And Barack Obama IS a good president..... I'm ok now.

Dinjiin: I see two: pale yellow and brown

That's your underwear you're looking at.

2014-06-13 12:28:39 AM
I get both green and very muted red, almost brown. And half the lines are always a stark black.

2014-06-13 12:30:19 AM
deep gray, purplish red. Then is starts to change to some green, and back to red, then the bright blood red and it's gushing around, and then the stars start to sing to me and the tone of the chain saw changes and I see the screaming of the lights and then the moon calls me on my phone and tells me to drip the stereo into the beehive and around and around and around and the palm fronds cry out in the pure joyous agony of the sea being eaten by the giant worm serpent of the sky

2014-06-13 12:31:07 AM
I see alternating bands of purple and pale yellowish green.

2014-06-13 12:33:09 AM
Sort of a rusty salmon pink, and olive.

2014-06-13 12:34:30 AM
I see whatever color I want to see in it. Dunno if that's normal.

2014-06-13 12:37:19 AM
Yellow.

The smaller spinny thing under it is fun. If I speed it up I can see yellow in the middle only ... and if I reverse it I see yellow on the edges only.

2014-06-13 12:38:29 AM
Pus yellow, steadily, and some flashes of purple.

2014-06-13 12:38:38 AM
bands of greens and browns. None of them quite the same

2014-06-13 12:39:04 AM
I see alternating black and white.  That's it.

HawgWild: I didn't see another color. Am I broken? Or perhaps it means I'm not racist?

I can see many things:
Attach ships on fire
My house from here
Clearly now
Shells sold by the sea shore
The lonely boy out on the weekend
Through time
Forever

It takes me way too long to get optical illusion effects, but the 'stripes' try to become a 'grainy' tractiony green while their nonexistence is yellow cloudy shapelessness, after so long the greens try to be blue and remain mostly green/yellow/shapeless, but the central circle begins to look heatlamp/IR red, only when I blink, once the 'idle' perception of the colors hits its 'neutral flywheel'...

I saw a penis. With a giant purple head. I saw purple... And pinstripes. I saw a purple penis with pinstripes. Named Paul. Paul the pinstriped purple penis. That's what I saw. He was perusing the periodicals. Paul the pinstriped purple penis was perusing the periodicals. In Persia.

I think I've taken this as far as I can...

I got purplish-black, but only in the central circle.

I bet it's different sampling frequencies for different photoreceptors in different people. Could also have something to do with the radial distribution of receptors from the center of the eye.

It would be easy to test the sampling frequency hypothesis by making small changes to the frame rate, and seeing if the colors an individual saw changed.

The great variety of colors seen may be the result of variation in display speeds from one computer to another.

Mr. Eugenides: A yellowish gold.

It may be Taupe and Sage as the other farker said, but I've no idea what Taupe and Sage are.

Porn stars, I think.

I had to get close to the screen to see anything. All I got was a small band of teal.

It can also be based on your web browser/current computer speed.  I watched it on a work computer earlier and saw nothing but black and white.  Watched it on a different, much faster computer and saw three different colors.

It seems to explain the theory is that your different rods and cones may not turn off simultaneously and some take a bit longer. White turns them all on, black off. I see only black and white. I'm assuming that Means I'm well calibrated. Since they are thinking of using it to detect disease of the eye, I'm guessing health wise it might be better to not be seeing colors.

SphericalTime: Bill_Wick's_Friend: Dark almost-brown yellow. Like the colour of a really old spicy mustard.

I get this one, pretty close.  It was lighter at first, then darkened.

When I reversed the small one I either got nothing or a dark blue that was almost black, couldn't tell.

I think I see a dark indigo so deep it's almost black, but it's so very dark it might just BE black.  What does it mean?  That deep down I'm a fan of the indigo girls?

Fun is that since my eyes don't work right, I see the colors become intertwining when I take my glasses off.

This is just amazing that so many people have reported so many different colors. I tried two monitors and got the same result, a forest/olive main color, and after a while the negative space becomes relatively magenta, but primarily a deep green chasing the black lines.
I downloaded the GIF to see if it's got any colors, or how to increase the smoothness, this GIF is a very low frame-rate, choppy and epileptic.  Searching for a flash version with better FPS, I found this
http://www.michaelbach.de/ot/col-Benham/index.html
With adjustable rotational speed.
The colors I see don't change from 100RPM to 300RPM. Below 100 it's clearly black and white, must be my brain's refresh rate.
At negative RPM you can get the primary and secondary colors to switch places, This app has a reverse button to do just that.

My colors didn't change across two monitors and ranges of speed, and I'm shocked that so many colors are reported, only a small handful agree with me that it's dark green.

Wow, when I looked at it on a site that doesn't have mobile AIDS - Wikipedia (mobile sites with lots of JavaScript tend to make my first gen iPhone 3G very, very slow), I got an awesome pattern. The stripes seem to appear in color, with blue ones separated by light grayish green from dull red ones. Seriously awesome.

The color only comes out because the gif is very fast on Wikipedia. I wonder if the color gets stronger or changes at different speeds (aside from disappearing at low speeds). I may have to print it out and try it on a physical top to see if the monitor is creating the effect.

Thank you, that link is awesome.  And on that one, I _only_ see dark green.  It starts for me around 250, but only in one spot.  At 300 it is in about 3 spots.  At 400 it goes most of the way around.

Try the link from Zel's post and see if you only get dark green.  I get other colors on the original, but that one, just dark green.  I'm curious if it's based on the size and positioning (it's much smaller on my screen than the other).
