Do I stare at the edges where its spinning fastest, or the middle? Does the colour appear when you look away (like other optical illusions do) or what? I'm not getting anything. How long am I supposed to stare at it.

I'm not getting much change at all except a neon green ring that's about half the diameter of the total circle and that only shows up when I focus intently on the center of the image.

WHAT I DIDN'T SEE WAS ANY COMMENTS FROM PENSIONERS. How can it be a proper daily mail article if they don't include insightful comments from, say Alf, an 85 year old pensioner from Liverpool. I'm sure Alf, a former telephone sanitizer had a lot to say about this.

Anyway, I didn't see anything, I just got a metallic taste. Kind of like the taste you get when you look at pictures of dusty books.

2014-06-12 11:43:03 PM
I saw brown. It took me a while before I realized that those brown lines weren't part of the image, so I kept wondering when the colors were supposed to appear.

2014-06-12 11:45:45 PM
I saw dots, many, many dots of purple then blue.  Then a kind of greenish tint at the edges which eventually became a grey-blue (mostly grey) hazy film in the center.

2014-06-12 11:46:05 PM
I saw both purple and indigo.  Purple in the quadrant that had the solid black color, and indigo everywhere else.

They're my favorite colors.

I am not going to say this very often, and this is not a troll, but....

For a Daily Mail article, that was pretty good.

I mean, it not only showed you the spinning wheel, it also gave you a version to play with.

I didn't read right down to the end where they probably end up blaming the whole thing on immigrants.

However, I do wonder how much different monitors affect the colors people are seeing. Many monitors do not produce colors faithfully.

Correction. I now see different color depending on how close I am to the image. If I am very close (nose distance) I see red. if I am medium distance (hands length) I see a mixture of red and blue (two toned colors). If I am elbow distance I see pale yellow. .

The Wikipedia article has a better animation.   I see all 3 primaries of red green and blue. It'd be interesting to correlate this with that color hue test that tests ones abilities to distinguish colors. I got a perfect score on it.

Waaaaay back in the 1970s, I read an article on someone who made a video display
that used this principle to display in color, using a B&W CRT.  It was very limited,
and could only do things like display pink text on a lime-green background, or vice-versa,
or other complimentary pairs of colors.

If you spin the wheel in reverse, you see the same colors in the reverse order.  Also, if
you have the actual disk in front of you, you can vary the speed.  Different speeds
work better for different people.  Watching it in a video isn't nearly as effective.

Print out one of these:  http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw= 1 259&bih=1044&q=Benham+illusion&oq=Benham+illusion&gs_l=img.3..0i24.124 7.4707.0.5354.10.4.0.6.6.0.95.285.4.4.0....0...1ac.1.46.img..0.10.290. LCaa4CZwJaw
and spin it.  The result will be much better.

deep gray, purplish red. It takes me way too long to get optical illusion effects, but the 'stripes' try to become a 'grainy' tractiony green while their nonexistence is yellow cloudy shapelessness, after so long the greens try to be blue and remain mostly green/yellow/shapeless, but the central circle begins to look heatlamp/IR red, only when I blink, once the 'idle' perception of the colors hits its 'neutral flywheel'...

I got purplish-black, but only in the central circle.

I bet it's different sampling frequencies for different photoreceptors in different people. Could also have something to do with the radial distribution of receptors from the center of the eye.

It would be easy to test the sampling frequency hypothesis by making small changes to the frame rate, and seeing if the colors an individual saw changed.

It can also be based on your web browser/current computer speed.  I watched it on a work computer earlier and saw nothing but black and white.  Watched it on a different, much faster computer and saw three different colors.

It seems to explain the theory is that your different rods and cones may not turn off simultaneously and some take a bit longer. White turns them all on, black off. I see only black and white. I'm assuming that Means I'm well calibrated. Since they are thinking of using it to detect disease of the eye, I'm guessing health wise it might be better to not be seeing colors.

I get this one, pretty close.  It was lighter at first, then darkened.

When I reversed the small one I either got nothing or a dark blue that was almost black, couldn't tell.

I think I see a dark indigo so deep it's almost black, but it's so very dark it might just BE black.  What does it mean?  That deep down I'm a fan of the indigo girls?

kriegsgeist: I bet it's different sampling frequencies for different photoreceptors in different people. Could also have something to do with the radial distribution of receptors from the center of the eye.

It would be easy to test the sampling frequency hypothesis by making small changes to the frame rate, and seeing if the colors an individual saw changed.

This is just amazing that so many people have reported so many different colors. I tried two monitors and got the same result, a forest/olive main color, and after a while the negative space becomes relatively magenta, but primarily a deep green chasing the black lines.
I downloaded the GIF to see if it's got any colors, or how to increase the smoothness, this GIF is a very low frame-rate, choppy and epileptic.  Searching for a flash version with better FPS, I found this

With adjustable rotational speed.
The colors I see don't change from 100RPM to 300RPM. Below 100 it's clearly black and white, must be my brain's refresh rate.
At negative RPM you can get the primary and secondary colors to switch places, This app has a reverse button to do just that.

My colors didn't change across two monitors and ranges of speed, and I'm shocked that so many colors are reported, only a small handful agree with me that it's dark green.

Wow, when I looked at it on a site that doesn't have mobile AIDS - Wikipedia (mobile sites with lots of JavaScript tend to make my first gen iPhone 3G very, very slow), I got an awesome pattern. The stripes seem to appear in color, with blue ones separated by light grayish green from dull red ones. Seriously awesome.

The color only comes out because the gif is very fast on Wikipedia. I wonder if the color gets stronger or changes at different speeds (aside from disappearing at low speeds). I may have to print it out and try it on a physical top to see if the monitor is creating the effect.

Thank you, that link is awesome.  And on that one, I _only_ see dark green.  It starts for me around 250, but only in one spot.  At 300 it is in about 3 spots.  At 400 it goes most of the way around.

When I spin that up to 400 RPM or so, I start to see a variety of colors in the black tracer lines- going outside to inside it goes:

3 black
1 blue
2 light purple
3 green
3 magenta

That's cool in itself, but the freaky thing is that when I hit the reverse button, the order of the colors flip. I still see the same colors in the same positions, but from outside to inside I see:

At the very least it displays how your attention corrupts, I think it has more to do with ones self considered option of 'scone-science'(subconscious development of an 'ordered consciousness') versus your memory aperture designated for segments of perception of the requirement for fight versus flight,  combinedwith the ambient subconscious's ability to designate patterns and the ability of the consciousness to identify and recollect 'glancing maizes' of the very idea of color.

Could the color configuration of the screen or monitor that the particular person is using contribute to the different shades that one sees? You sometimes sees screens where the white can be tinted yellow, or even blue.

That would involve pupil coordination versus light intensity saturation, your 'perception' of the colors tends to make those kinds of variable attributes, an ambient static background.

et al

A physical spinning-top version works better. I have one made of wood (not with me at the moment unfortunately) which turns the broken arcs into a muted earth-toney color spectrum when you spin it. As I remember, the colors intensify a little as the top slows down, and their order is reversed if you spin the top the other way. It actually is a rather interesting effect.

It seems to depend on the pattern and speed what the effect is. Perhaps also on the monitor. On my computer, now, the wikipedia version has blue patterns interspersed with a drab green (as opposed to the 3 clear colors on my iPhone). The interactive one has 4 colors in 4 clear bands at higher speeds (from ~250rpm up), 3 red stripes on the inside, followed by 3 olive green, 3 lilac, and 3 blue. At 150rpm only the inside 3 rings show a dark red.

Really a weird thing.

Ideally it may be analog, like looking at a spinning record.

I can see where rapid rotation could cause a hue shift and/or differing personal reactions(the way the stutter in fluorescent lighting really stands out to some and others don't notice it.

Also depends on what people's eyes are currently adapted to.  If someone stares at a red scene for a long time, and another stares at a lushly green scene, they'll likely perceive different colors.(ie when the view is replaced the opposite of the spectrum will tend to appear)

Lastly, when presented with instability, our minds will attempt to fill in the blanks.(ie the quickly flashing faces that appear monsterous and a plethora of other visual phenomenon)

Nope, you see stripes of color in it, or you don't. Some people just don't see them, do try the video though, as browser lag could make the gif not work. The color comes from the blinking of white/black matching the frequency of the colors itself I believe, so any lag would ruin the effect.

Weird. Am I supposed to see multiple colors? I see red for a bit then it alternates between a nasty shade of yellowish brown-green then back to red.

Reddish brown and blue, but the blue changed to black at times.

Cursory testing reveals that if I stare at the middle long enough, I see the red. It's along the lines of Red #2 when you favorite someone on Fark. This is on a 15" Asus laptop monitor, me with no coffee, sitting on the can in delicate bathroom lighting. For what it's worth, I am color deficient but I generally have no issue discerning green from red. I am 5'10 & 1/2", 188lbs. Stocky build with a great smile and beautiful brown eyes. A Pisces by birth, but a Scorpio in the sack, I'm always up for a good time, whether than means a nice stroll through the neighborhood or an evening of knocking back shots at the club. So, if that sounds hot to you, sorry this is a men only affair, just shoot me an email to my gmail account by the same username. Giggity, giggity, goo.

If you do a print screen, there is nothing there but black lines. Any other colour is the effect.

I see orange brown lines, while the black lines look a sort of blue-gray that contrasts with the orangey-brown.

The black lines also blur somewhat which makes a dull lilac or mauve background behind the black lines.

My guess is that the effect is produced by the time lags in your perception of the moving images like in those effects where you stare at a picture and then see the image in reverse colour after a while when you look away as well as optical illusions where the slowness of your retina creates an effect, such as a wheel turning backwards or a ballerina switching spin direction.

The colours probably are contrasting: orange-purple, yellow-blue, etc. The phantom lines are in a colour contrasting with the black lines. If you add the two colours together, you'd get black: brown and blue make black.

Yes this is dog: I had to get close to the screen to see anything. All I got was a small band of teal.

I got teal, just above the black circle in the center. It was very faint, but it was teal.

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of the night.

Alternately:

A herd of beautiful, wild ponies running free across the plain.

/seriously, though, saw red, yellow and green

Sgygus: The great variety of colors seen may be the result of variation in display speeds from one computer to another.

/a thought

Perhaps, but I'm getting different results from people staring at my screen.  I see a browish red, some dirty yellow, and a bit of olive green.  Others - looking at my screen - are seeing different results.  No color (just black and white), dark green, red.

2014-06-13 09:45:39 AM
I also mostly see only black and white but of I squint enough I get baby colors? light pink and light blue... very light.

brownish red.

a brownish color?

AutumnWind: Yellow.

The smaller spinny thing under it is fun. If I speed it up I can see yellow in the middle only ... and if I reverse it I see yellow on the edges only.

This is exactly what I see as well.  Pale (slightly brown) yellow at the center only when spinning forward, same colour at the edges only when spinning in reverse.

I saw the empty void of reality.

The farked up thing is I only saw nothing but black and white with a blue disc in the middle until people posted that they saw colors along the lines. Then I saw brown/yellow along the lines.

dopirt: WHAT I DIDN'T SEE WAS ANY COMMENTS FROM PENSIONERS.

I got a plastic top like this in elementary school (25-ish years ago)... I've always seen a combination between bright red, reddish brown, and yellow depending on how fast I spun it and how long I stared...

I think I still have it somewhere...

Yellow in the 2nd and 4th groups from the center.
Blue in the 3rd group.

LIttle bit of both!

Starting from the center I see: Dark Green, Yellow, Red. Maybe it affects partially colorblind folks differently?

If all you can see is black and white, it means you ARE a racist.

I'm sorry you're a racist. Get help.

Dark red, cyan, and green.

Same here, was going to say yellowish beige.

Very interesting though.

All I saw were grey streaks, which if the article is correct, means that your and my retinas respond equally to all colors of the visible light spectrum.

I see two different colors. Yellow in the lined portion and purple in the solid portions. Could be my monitor is slightly off but I doubt it since I'm in the printing business and my color vision memory is tuned into to all sorts of color gamuts. In the days of CRT monitors I had to return several because they just never would adjust to be correctly in tune with RGB color specs and everything looked off. Made for a lot of fun when color corrected stuff made it back to the press and looked like crap.

Green and a reddish brown.

2014-06-13 07:00:04 PM
When I focus on the lines, I get yellow at the center of my FOV, with flashes of green off to the sides.  If I relax my focus a bit and try to take in the whole thing at a go, I'm getting a sort of purplish afterimage.

2014-06-13 08:19:40 PM
Mostly black and white. The lines were kind of navy or tan/olive.

2014-06-13 10:28:02 PM
Muted yellow bordering on olive
