Meh.

She's not hoarding, she's farming.  Doesnt seem much different than beekeepers.  Honey and beeswax are used for food and medicine and we find that OK.  Not that Im down with cockroaches, but it's not that wild of an idea.

I for one am SHOCKED that a Fark headline misrepresented the facts of the linked article.

Ok, what happened to the stereotypical "Asian women look young until they're 60" thing? She the same age as me and looks like she could be my grandmother.

This is what a stereotypical early 40's Asian woman looks like, for reference:

"These are all my children, my babies," Yuan told the Southern Metropolis News.

[...]

Yuan sells the roaches after they are drowned in vats of water and then drying in the sun. "Those dried ones can be sold at 300 yuan to 400 yuan ($48-$64) per jin (1.1 lb). I harvest every two months and dry 10kg to 20kg (22 lbs to 44 lbs) every time."

O.o

Roaches are my worst nightmare. They were teeny, in the odd filthy house I chanced upon where I grew up in CA. Here in the south, mofos are huge. First Commando Roach I met was in Biloxi MS. I stomped it with combat boots and it ran and flipped me the bird. Bugs in general F with me. I have bugs F'ing with me stories for days. They fly in my face.

*shiver*

Why me? I'd gladly observe them behind glass but they jump at me!

Except not only does Yuan not live in the same house, she "sells the roaches after they are drowned in vats of water and then [dried] in the sun", you could suggest that to the cat lady, but the response is likely to be negative.

Yeah, these aren't pets. These are purely  livestock. She probably doesn't even name them.

If I had 100,000 of anything, I'd name them all George.  And maybe name one Nemo.

But that still wouldn't make them pets.  I agree that they are livestock.

China must suck if people keep roaches as pets.

That being said, I had a similar idea about breeding and growing shrimp (as food) but it was waaaayyyy too impractical.

With cockroaches, at least one should be named Archy.
