Mark Ratner: I weep for the future.

Somebody predicted this very future....back in 1930.

Caption: "The fascinating thing about this vision of the future from a German magazine in 1930 isn't that they envisioned smart phones and Facetime, but that they totally got the culture right: two people sitting at a table and ignoring each other while they look into their phones. Nice that they made it ergonomic and gave it a handle, too. "

What kind of weirdo prefers tinkering around on their phone to drinking, smoking and having unprotected sex?

So much for overpopulation

Watching a movie like the matrix, those cocoons everybody is in are supposed to be horrifying. I think a lot of people these days would want one as long as it came with wifi.

They're on the phone more because it's cheaper than getting in the car and going to see their friends/lovers etc.

They're unable to make money because all the minimum wage jobs are taken up by over-educated Gen X/Y/Millenials and people who are supposed to be farking RETIRED.

Those people are working the minimum wage job to make sure their kids have at least something in their lives, because they can't find real work because "job creators" moved everything overseas for "corporate interests" because "corporations are people too."

miss diminutive: The percentage who attempted suicide in the previous year held steady at about 8 percent.

8 percent? For some reason that seems high to me. I know teens are at the highest risk for suicide and suicidal thoughts, but 8 percent attempted in the past year? Wow.

%98 of that %8 was just for the attention.
Nothing like the thrill of showing your shallow wrist scars off to your besties at school.

I sat near a 30-something couple eating lunch in the food court the other day and they both stared and pecked at their phones the entire time. I don't think they said one word to each other. farkin weird.

ecmoRandomNumbers: Maybe the cell phone is the malthusian control our species needed.

But there's an Idiocracy problem again, where teens too dumb to get trapped by smartphones are the ones that breed.

I hope anyone with suicidal thoughts gets help... but I'm thinking they may be playing a little loose with the stats on this one.  Maybe they're considering "seriously contemplating" as "attempted".

But yeah, I knew a lot of at-risk people when I was in HS, and no way anywhere near 8 percent attempted it.
