Yep

Shortly after 9/11 there were several attacks on Sikhs who live in Lane County, Oregon. The attackers made the assumption that because they wear turbans they must be Muslims.

Don't forget that asshole a few years back who shot up a Sikh temple.

vrax: Gecko Gingrich: The final straw that ended a pretty good friendship between me and someone else was when he declared on Facebook that "all them Muslims should be shipped back to where they came from".

I've got a friend who was born in Pakistan. Her family left when she was about three because they are Christian and were "encouraged" by the locals to seek a new locale. She was "one of them Muslims".

My friend from high school whose family came from Persia about 4 generations back was "one of them Muslims".

My Lebanese friend and fellow choirboy (no, literally, we sang in The St. Paul's Choir of Men and Boys together) who died when I was 12 in a horrific car accident would have been "one of them Muslims".

The truly ironic thing about the whole situation is that said Facebook poster is a Catholic Irish-American.

People sure say stupid shiat when they're drunk.

As a person of Irish descent, I take offense to this. I'll have you know I'm perfectly capable of saying stupid shiat when I'm sober. Or I could. Theoretically.

Those fringey things worn on the shoulders of third-world dictators, doormen and other wearers of silly uniforms. I don't know how you make them anti-Muslim. Maybe put a picture of Mohammad on them.

Because it's a magical, far away place where the sun is always shining and the air smells like warm root beer and the towels are oh-so-fluffy.  In Albuquerque, the shriners and the lepers play their ukuleles all day long, and anyone on the street will gladly shave your back for a nickel.

On the other hand, it can be surprisingly difficult to find a doughnut shop that has Bavarian cream-filled donuts in stock.

I'm not condoning the violence against foreign immigrants, but did they really HAVE to come to America, specifically? I mean there are more, probably more tolerant countries that are accepting of Catholics. Unless they were here before 9-11, but if I were someone of their race or even similar to their race, I would strongly reconsider coming to America after 9-11, and in the wake of the damn near decade long war in the Middle East to boot. Yeah not the best time period to be of Iraqi descent and living in America.

Sofa King Smart: I was visiting my son this past weekend and my wife and I attended the sunday service at St James Catholic church in downtown Seattle... 10am service had not only a priest, but also a rabbi and a gentleman that they identified in the program as a sufi muslim interfaith leader.  Each said a prayer for peace as part of the ceremony (it was supposed to coincide with Pope Francis meeting with Peres and Abbas)... and it was the most inspirational thing I have witnessed in a church in my entire life.  If all religious services could be more like that I would probably be a more 'religious' person.

I was at the Papal audience in Rome after Pope Frank got back from the mid-east.  It was kind of inspiring.

Rent Party: JesseL: Rent Party: You know, back in the day, Catholics were pretty safe in Iraq, a well represented and respected minority, in fact.  I wonder what happened to drive them out of their native country?

Oil money being funneled into the Wahhabi movement.

I don't think that was it.

I mean, the Iraqi Foreign Minister was a Catholic a while back.  What ever happened to that guy?

He was sentenced to death for "persecution of Islamic parties," but the Iraqi President has refused to sign his execution order.

ignorant Bigots who attack Sikhs are usually a self-correcting problem as one of the basic tenets of their religion, at least for men, is be armed at all times

I was under the impression that they were decorative to the extent that many are pinned into their sheaths, rendering them inoperable as a weapon.

The Kirpan is a ceremonial weapon and, frankly, considering that the ignorant bigots often are going about in numbers and armed with firearms, I highly doubt a kirpan would be all that helpful.

You obviously missed the thread a few days ago when a sword fight broke out in a temple...
