Yep

Shortly after 9/11 there were several attacks on Sikhs who live in Lane County, Oregon. The attackers made the assumption that because they wear turbans they must be Muslims.

The final straw that ended a pretty good friendship between me and someone else was when he declared on Facebook that "all them Muslims should be shipped back to where they came from".

I've got a friend who was born in Pakistan. Her family left when she was about three because they are Christian and were "encouraged" by the locals to seek a new locale. She was "one of them Muslims".

My friend from high school whose family came from Persia about 4 generations back was "one of them Muslims".

My Lebanese friend and fellow choirboy (no, literally, we sang in The St. Paul's Choir of Men and Boys together) who died when I was 12 in a horrific car accident would have been "one of them Muslims".

The truly ironic thing about the whole situation is that said Facebook poster is a Catholic Irish-American.

It can take as long as a year (or more) to process and get your replacement document. And sometimes, your application for a replacement certificate may be denied, in which case you're going to spend quite a bit of time appealing it.

The US is a major emigration point for ethnic Assyrians, many of whom who practice one of the various Syriac Christian faiths.  There are also a large number of Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians from the Near and Middle East who have emigrated.

In short, you can't just look at ethnicity and guess their religion.  Unless there is some major cue or they tell you, you just don't know.

Yeah, spent a few weeks in New Mexico, it was beautiful. The reservation towns(Pueblos, I believe) were actually nice, too, which was not the norm in Arizona... I got a little tired of downtown Santa Fe, at first the twisting narrow streets and adobe are charming. After awhile, you want some color and a street that you can pass a dog in, but I really did enjoy NM for the most part.

You know, before I read these two comments, I was ignorant of the Sikh.
I decided to look up the belief system and was really surprised at what I learned.
I'm not saying that I was suspicious of them, but I was ignorant.
I kinda like what they believe, well at least what Wiki says. I'll need to talk to one of these guys before forming a real opinion.
Just sayin' thanks for giving me that little push.

Oil money being funneled into the Wahhabi movement.

I don't think that was it.  I mean, the Iraqi Foreign Minister was a Catholic a while back.  What ever happened to that guy?

Tariq Aziz surrendered to US forces after the invasion, and stood trial for various atrocities committed during the Hussein regime, was found guilty and was sentenced to death by the post-Hussein government, but the new Iraqi President refused to sign the death warrant, leaving him on death row indefinitely.  According to his lawyer, he's in poor/failing health and basically wants to be executed to be put out his misery.

Called that one too.

The more ritualistic an attack is, like carving/branding someone, the less likely it is to be true. In this case, just beating the hell out of someone and robbing them isn't too implausible, but I don't recall any recent "trigger" events that would lead to this... so my guess is a very personal attack by someone who hates the wife or husband or both, and the virulent hate for their ethnicity isn't the root cause. Not sure what the husband does for money, but the attacker may have felt screwed over somehow and gone farking nuts over it. Or maybe he just randomly fixated on them as the source of all his problems. Psychotics gonna psychotic.

Gecko Gingrich: The final straw that ended a pretty good friendship between me and someone else was when he declared on Facebook that "all them Muslims should be shipped back to where they came from".

Back during the Iranian revolution there were several Persian students that I had classes with, and a few that I worked with. They could never go back home, and their families were massacred. Some idiot or idiots shot a couple of their car windows with bb guns. Stupidity is sad, but abject stupidity should be criminal.

When you're creating refugees by waging war in a foreign country, you are sort of obligated to take in at least some of those refugees. Most of the Iraqi refugees ran to their neighbors, like Jordan and Syria, but Europe has hundred of thousands,, and you take your part of the responsibility like a grown up nation too.

Back during the Iranian revolution there were several Persian students that I had classes with, and a few that I worked with. They could never go back home, and their families were massacred. Some idiot or idiots shot a couple of their car windows with bb guns. Stupidity is sad, but abject stupidity should be criminal.

Same sort of situation at my university- some frat boys decided to beat up a Persian guy from my dorm (who had just found out that week that his uncle who was in the Iranian military under the Shah had been executed and the rest of the family had fled the country).  A Chinese guy who had been walking with him past that frat ran into the dorm and told us what was happening.  About 40 of us ran out of the dorm with whatever we could grab for weapons and the cops got there after we had rescued him  stopped us from storming their frat house.  Good thing they did, because there certainly would have been some serious bloodshed and we were ready to tear that place down.

1607. Good luck on your citizenship test, by the way.

I thought you were pulling my leg but I looked it up anyway. I guess you meant Jamestown? That's one good answer, although another good answer would've been when we did the same thing to the Irish. Or expand "we" and say when Columbus landed... or...

You had to look it up?

Why are you equating conservatives with a government that probably was the most socialist in American history? Just look at how the CSA was run, managed, its laws and edicts, etc. Its "southerners aren't over it yet, regardless of political affiliation" norther conservatives worship at the alter of Lincoln

You may have a point - your post may even be an example - but he said similarly themed, though not quite as extreme stuff sober and in person before that.

Also, when we had a beer a few months after (he was really "torn up" that I was so mean to him, but not about what he said though, and needed some "closure") he didn't back down at all.

As a person of Irish descent, I take offense to this. I'll have you know I'm perfectly capable of saying stupid shiat when I'm sober. Or I could. Theoretically.

CSB time:

Right before 9/11, I was dating an Iraqi-American Catholic girl.  Tiny, pretty and very witty.  We broke up in late August, but I still cared deeply about her and I really worried about something bad happening to her when it all happened.  She told me that even though she lived in the South that she wasn't really worried. Luckily, she never had a really bad experience like in the article, although she did occasionally get treated like she was a Muslim even though she wasn't.

However, a few years later, around the time of the US invasion of Iraq, she took a job working in Mexico.  She tried to explain the complexity of how she felt about the situation (much of her family had been killed by the Baathists), but her Mexican co-workers just gave her crap about being one of those warmongering American gringos!  She told me, "It's like I just can't win".

Green chile cheeseburgers!

That looks super familiar. Is it 505 Burgers in Gallup?

Incidentally, Gallup is the Mos Eisley of New Mexico, but Albuquerque is really nice. There are assholes everywhere, but Albuquerque is generally really tolerant and progressive. I suspect that last word will piss some of you off and you won't want to visit. Go south. There's stuff for you down there.

The first (blurry) one was from the Owl Bar in San Antonio, NM. Ate quite a few of those when I was going to school at Tech.

The second one was the first best non-blurry one Google gave me. I have no idea where it was from...

Yep

Shortly after 9/11 there were several attacks on Sikhs who live in Lane County, Oregon. The attackers made the assumption that because they wear turbans they must be Muslims.

ignorant Bigots who attack Sikhs are usually a self-correcting problem as one of the basic tenets of their religion, at least for men, is be armed at all times

Well, yes and no, they were heavily persecuted in 15th century India, therefore they started carrying weapons, or weapon, the kirpan (it's a dagger).

The religion itself is basically peaceful but because both the Muslims and Hindus kept farking with them all the time, they got pretty good at killing 1600's style. Their religion, unlike Hinduism, didn't condemn anyone for harming other people if they're acting in self defense, even though it does suggest human life is supreme or precious. Nothing about the religion itself suggests that violence should be done unto others for any reason other than self defense.

In 1984, two Sikhs were convicted of killing  Indira Gandhi, because she ordered the takeover of one of their sacred temples. (Operation Blue Star)

It's been about 3-4 years since I've read about the history of the Sikh religion, and I honestly don't remember the name of the book I got most of this information from. In other words, there might be glaring inaccuracies in what I just typed, but not because I'm trying to mislead anyone. I either mis-remembered it, or the source material had errors.

Because it's a magical, far away place where the sun is always shining and the air smells like warm root beer and the towels are oh-so-fluffy.  In Albuquerque, the shriners and the lepers play their ukuleles all day long, and anyone on the street will gladly shave your back for a nickel.

On the other hand, it can be surprisingly difficult to find a doughnut shop that has Bavarian cream-filled donuts in stock.

The Kirpan is a ceremonial weapon and, frankly, considering that the ignorant bigots often are going about in numbers and armed with firearms, I highly doubt a kirpan would be all that helpful.

You obviously missed the thread a few days ago when a sword fight broke out in a temple...

There were attacks on Indians in the USA, as well. That was a real head-scratcher--Muslim terrorists do something, so go out and attack Hindus?

I was going to go with something like "Go fark yourself."  Your response shows admirable restraint.  Then it occurred to me that he might have meant "They don't belong here because they belong in their own country" or something, and he was just really bad at expressing himself.

Since he hasn't come back to the thread to explain or defend himself, I guess I should just mark him down as a hit-and-run troll and forget about him.

IF I am remembering all my history correctly, Sikhism is an explicitly militant religion, although as you say violence is supposed to be in self defense and defense of religious freedom.  It came into being in India about the time of the Muslim invasions and was somewhat created to fight those invaders (spiritually it combines Hinduism, some local flavor and Buddhism IIRC)  Most Baptised men take the name Singh (Lion) and both the Kirpan and their version of holy underwear are symbols of the  from the warrior aspects  of the religion.

Militarily, Sikh units of the British Army were feared only slightly less than Ghurka ones for many of the same reasons  Sikhs and Afghans both remember the battle of Saragarhi  where 21 Sikh soldiers held a fort against an attacking force of over 10,000 Afghan Pashtuns

Dinjiin: The US is a major emigration point for ethnic Assyrians, many of whom who practice one of the various Syriac Christian faiths.  There are also a large number of Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians from the Near and Middle East who have emigrated.

In short, you can't just look at ethnicity and guess their religion.  Unless there is some major cue or they tell you, you just don't know.

Yeah.  My grandparents were Marionite Catholics.  During mass, the priest speaks a combination of English, Arabic and Aramaic.  The in-laws from rural Oklahoma just can't wrap their minds around the idea that there are Christians.....from the Middle East.
