Heat by 8 tonight. Why?

MAXIMUM TROLLING!

2014-06-12 01:03:33 PM
Spurs by three.  Foul shots are the determining factor.   Lebron goes off, but no one else does.

34 pts, 10 reb, 7 assist, 3 steals, 2 blocks

under 40% for everyone else

Predictions time?  Spurs lose because Joey Crawford.

2014-06-12 01:25:23 PM
I love how everyone acts like Joey Crawford hurts the Spurs.

a) He's the most notorious pro-visiting-team ref in the league
b) He's the most notorious "f*ck superstars* ref in the league
c) He got suspended for the REST OF A SEASON for ejecting Timmy...guys have been ejected for damn near nothing before and the ref never gets suspended

The fact that you're describing a ref as notorious more than 0 times is proof that he shouldn't be reffing this game.

Sort of.

But considering half the complaining about referees is that stars get preferential treatment and home teams get more calls, you'd THINK Miami haters would want him on the court.

Crawford's already gotten the memo that Timmy D is untouchable.

I don't like that someway, somehow, he makes the game about himself, and it's pretty much always at the detriment of the game.

I'm amazed that he kept his job when he was suspended.  If you're willing to suspend him for that long, just cut him loose!  Are there seriously no refs to replace him?

John Madden does basketball now?

com'on mike, you can do better...try something involving Ray Allen being overrated without Denzel Washington coaching him on or how Chris Bosh not being a first-ballot hall-of-famer is a travesty and an insult to the PF position.

personally, if you are known as a referee, that should raise ten red flags right there.  Referees should be seen and not heard unless they blow the whistle; and if the public starts to know them by name, bye-bye

think about it, how many ref's/umpires do you know the names of in other sports?

2014-06-12 08:36:02 PM
I think the Heat will win after a loss like they always seem to do, but I am getting this feeling that the Spurs steal another game in Miami tonight. The Heat have been helped out a ton by Lewis so far, and I don't think that continues tonight. So unless Mario, Battier or Cole step up for 15ish points tonight, I think the Heat will really struggle.

I really like Sage. Simmons and Jalen are ok, I like their podcasts they do but sometimes it doesn't translate as well onto a pregame or halftime show. Collins is better than Magic "I think the Lakers will beat the Spurs in the first round last year", but he could be replaced and I wouldn't mind.

no one is expecting the spurs to be unconscious the first half tonight. So I am expecting more of a grinder match, which still gives the spurs and deep bench a favorable chance.

I really like Collins, but I don't think he meshes well with the others.  That said, I think I'd dump Simmons and Rose before Collins.  I like Simmons, but just think that he's better when he gets more than 30 second blurbs at a time.

Bad calls against the Heat, Bad calls against the Spurs; no matter what, we will be talking about Joey tomorrow.

Mind you, he's gotta bring his A-game after the Brazil game.

Something about this series though just makes me think that James flat out wills them to a title in 6. Bosh/Wade should bounce back a bit and the role players will play better D.

Personal preference is I prefer a no-call. But I'm more a fan of an overall no-call if it isn't a clear charge/block in any circumstance. Just rather see a let them play then a situation that puts a key player in foul trouble on a 50/50 call. Agree with you on the sideways thing

I agree, but my opinion comes from what passes for fouls in pickup games now-a-days...everyone runs a shell-type offense, barrel into the lane like a full back, throw up a prayer and call foul if it misses

I doubt he was mocking hoops, since the contact made in the Croatia could be called a penalty in basketball. Flopping is much more prominent in soccer, no doubt. Basketball is just catching up with it.

I think it is a case of Heat ran into a team that can play with them and not be intimidated...not quite the Heat's fault, the eastern conference has been weak for a good number of years now.

that and the Spurs are a complete team, which again, isn't needed in the east.

it can though... just happened to look up the all time steals leaders too, and I never followed the Jazz or stockton that much, but damn:

1John Stockton  3,265
2Jason Kidd  2,684
3Michael Jordan  2,514
4Gary Payton  2,445
5Maurice Cheeks  2,310

damn near 600 more than the next guy, but if we go by accomplishment, then Ray Artest/Metta World Peace should be HOF because he is on the top 25 list for steals too

Dude the BBHOF is in a strip mall in Springfield Massachusetts. It doesn't have near the pretense that baseball or football do.

it can though... just happened to look up the all time steals leaders too, and I never followed the Jazz or stockton that much, but damn:

1John Stockton  3,265
2Jason Kidd  2,684
3Michael Jordan  2,514
4Gary Payton  2,445
5Maurice Cheeks  2,310

damn near 600 more than the next guy, but if we go by accomplishment, then Ray Artest/Metta World Peace should be HOF because he is on the top 25 list for steals too

Steals aren't a "you're a top 25 guy and you're in" stat.

6 minute mark in the quarter. Bad time for Spurs....

2014-06-12 10:51:23 PM
Hahahaa! Back up to 20 points!

Come on, Spurs....keep it up.  You seem to have deciphered to code to beat the Heat, so keep it up for this game and next and I will consider the first half of the year a huge win.

Plus, it completely destroys any talk of Lebron being the best ever.

TheManofPA: If Heat fans boo them in the 4th, man, they just flat out don't deserve to see another game with this cast. I have fun taking jabs, but if you get a group of three top tier players who take pay cuts to play in your city....you clap them off the court when the season is done like in hockey.*

*Point invalid if one of them is Kobe, hate that guy

Kobe would never take a pay cut.  he has the self-delusion that you want in your star players (for better or worse)...probably thinks could have won all those championships without Shaq

ColonelCathcart: Does anyone else enjoy watching the Heat pout?

/C'mon that has to be something! said Wade (pouting)

Just Wade. F*ck that guy. Bosh and LeBron catch all the hell, Wade contributes the least and flops the most and doesn't get anything.

Based on the first round, maybe my lil Mavs could have taken down the Heat again this year.

OK, so the question now is, who is Finals MVP? Unfortunately, I don't think Pop is eligible. Duncan?

He's a PR genius (and has been over the past 4 years). Right when people are about to turn on him, he always does the exact right thing and deflects it. Mind you, he's a great player (or at least was/can be), but he's found the perfect situation where he can only gain/never lose. Miami can't even hate on him since he's the one who figured out a way to set up this mini-dynasty.

If any one of the Heat's shooters actually shot like ANY of the Spurs have shot, this series might be interesting.

I guess it's kind of a year for "best teams" beating "best player" in convincing fashion in a championship, though.

I agree, just trying to make a point, if you let everyone in, then it is no longer something of merit, just another attendance certificate.  They could up the bar for candidacy and no one would complain, it is a young sport, they have to start raising the bar for admittance at some point.

I think you probably have to say Parker right now; he's been the most consistent. The way Leonard has come on though....

Oh come on JVG, the Heat are deserving to be here and would have been the favorites (just slightly against OKC)

And lookng at the stats from previous games, if Spurs win this title, I HAVE NO CLUE who wuold be MVP. Parker/Manu/Duncan have flat out even stats across the board.

Duncan is 2 points and 1 board from a record breaking double double

You know lots of people seem to expect Timmy to retire if the Spurs win this series, but I don't think he will. The Spurs can keep this rolling, and Pop has been managing their minutes so well it is reducing the wear and tear on the Spurs. I think Tim and the crew are loving this setup they have going, and the idea of getting a #6 ring would be pretty damn appealing.

2014-06-12 11:03:37 PM

Hyjamon: Spurs by three.  Foul shots are the determining factor.   Lebron goes off, but no one else does.

34 pts, 10 reb, 7 assist, 3 steals, 2 blocks

under 40% for everyone else

Lebron 19

I would have sworn that Duncan/Pop would have retired after last postseason if they won. I was kind of surprised they came back this year and thought that this was going to be one of those "things end badly" seasons for them (in that they barely make the playoffs, easy exit)

Maybe they retire this year, maybe not.

I can see Timmy retiring, going out on top, physical toll on the body, etc.

Pop may stick it out to prove his 'system' didn't require timmy, just role players all around.

I love that the Spurs took this game out of Joey Crawford's hands before he could even get warmed up.

LeBron is probably one of the 10 greatest players of all time, but going 2-3 in 5 Finals appearances isn't doing him any favors in the greatest ever debate.

That's basically "the Rock" pic for these NBA finals

Okay, Pop should call a TO right here. You don't want them getting any sembleance of confidence to pull within 15 with 8 min left. You don't want your stars to have to come back in and risk injury because they aren't ready

Okay, Pop should call a TO right here. You don't want them getting any sembleance of confidence to pull within 15 with 8 min left. You don't want your stars to have to come back in and risk injury because they aren't ready

The discussion is probably Bird. Jordan/Russel are untouchable. Wilt is probably a safe three. Kareem than Magic. If Spurs had won last year AND closed this in 5, Duncan passes Bird and serious consideration past Magic. As is, he probably can't pass Magic. He could be discussed past Bird, but his quiet nature versus the legendary status/mythos of Bird hurts him

Mind you at that level, it's all a stat circle jerk anyhow but that's what's fun about sports (unless you have to eat the JVG cookie)

I don't think it's over as you get a poorly officiated game or if James decides not to pass the whole first half, Heat could take game 5 (and then go right home for game 6) but interesting turn of events.

Points and rebounds are significant, but double-double is a stupid stat. 10 and 10 gets you a double-double. 33, 9, and 7 doesn't.

It's something that has "significance" because of a base-10 system.

Magic and Bird's careers are shorter. Not sure if that helps or hurts their cause. They also each have one more MVP award, which is a big deal.
Duncan was always a winner more than he was ever the obvious choice for "best player on the planet."

15 and 10 is actually pretty shiatty if you're playing 40 minutes a night with below average shooting percentage and rebound rate. Getting the double double is more or less a consolation prize for showing up and having a pulse at that point. Per games are less important that per 36s (which normalize production albeit with a bent towards players with less playing time). Efficiency stats are also quite good (assist/turnover ratio being one example).

Spurs are probably playing the greatest team basketball I've seen in my lifetime.    Maybe the 85 Celtics, but while the Celtics maybe had better players, the Spurs ball movement is unparalleled.    Big, small, 3 percentage, post, penetration kickout, there's no weaknesses.

2014-06-13 12:39:52 AM
Rick Carlisle should get automatically inducted into the HOF just for taking a team with a declining Dirk, Jae Crowder, Samuel Dalembert and the zombie corpses of Vince Carter and Shawn Marion and taking the Spurs to 7 games.

Mike_LowELL: BlueDWarrior: If Pop was that kind of coach he might have been able to challenge the Bulls total win record.

I find it quite amusing that a guy who was a starter for a team that made the second round of the playoffs last year (Belinelli) is getting garbage time in the Finals.

IAmRight: /no one cares if you lose in the early rounds, just ask Jordan

Which is funny, because I can't think of a single time that Jordan ever lost a playoff series.  Wow.  He went undefeated in the playoffs.  Incredible.

He lost in '95 to Orlando, two months after he quit playing baseball. He certainly rectified that shiat in '96.

2014-06-13 01:01:31 AM

Mike_LowELL: I hope this ends the LeBron debate once and for all.  Michael Jordan never beat a team as good as this one.

It's been a waaaambulance fest from the beginning, and the Fark modmins didn't help by refusing to greenlight several threads of Spurs matchups in in these playoffs they estimated wouldn't draw any interest. How the f*ck do you not greenlight a conference finals thread?

LeBron is a great player and a nice guy, but he's not MJ. But perhaps the NBA is just setting us up to see a team come back from a 3-1 deficit in the history of bullshiat. Who knows.

2014-06-13 01:12:53 AM
None of this is on LeBron.  The Heat are a decaying team.  Their role players are old and decrepit, they're the oldest team in the league, and the moves they made to get Beasley and Oden didn't pan out at all.  They just ran into a team that's been dreaming about them for an entire year that is historically deep and well coached.

But Pippen still gets no respect at all for carrying that team for damn near two seasons, winning 55 games that first year.

LeBrons biggest problem is that he has no desire to be a leader. He just wants to play and have a yes man as a coach. But as in Cleveland when the chips are down his teams are so so so rotten. Kobe, Bird, Magic and Jordan can rally the troops. LeBron doesn't want that responsibility. He will be remembered as a great player but I have my doubts as one of the greatest

Yea, the only problem with that is there are 29 other teams who were "dreaming" about the same thing and only one could put themselves in the position to actually do it. Compiling the best regular season record in the league and pushing the trophy holder to a 3-1 deficit in the Finals is no dream, it's what a champion does.

And to say the Heat are a decaying team, as if that's an excuse, is absurd. This notion that the Spurs are old has been thrown out for years, but I don't remember anyone making excuses for them. In fact, Pops took a $50,000 fine for letting Duncan, Parker and Ginobili fly home rather than play the Heat a couple years ago. and listed them on the play sheet as "old guys" as to why they didn't play. LOL.

No, nobody makes excuses. The Spurs are the best team simply because they are, regardless of what the TV audience says.

When the team loses in the regular season it's the players' fault. When they lose in the playoffs it's coach's fault.

Tough call. Seattle's almost too enamored with their all consuming hatred for the Thunder. If they take Miami's team, they might actually have to focus on supporting a team consistently instead of just supporting whatever team the Thunder is currently playing against.

Pumpernickel bread: As for the leaving early...Miami fans are fickle.  It is Miami and there are better things to do after all.  Even when the Hurricanes are competing for national titles in football, their stadium is often half empty.

Heat fans strike me as a bootleg knockoff version of Laker fans. They go to the games, hoping to be seen on TV,
But at least Laker fans don't leave the first level empty with 5 minutes left.

Hell, Jack Nicholson and Spike Lee may be incredibly obnoxious at the Lakers and Knicks games, but they'll stick around till the final buzzer even when their team is getting curb stomped.

It does make the stayers better fans. Those fans care about their team whether they are winning or losing. Leaving early shows that you are only a "fair-weather" fan that isn't man enough to be able to handle a loss.

Leaving down 20 in the 4th is fine.

Your first graph makes no sense.  The Spurs are the team that can do this, and they've been posed since last year.

Rest of it, i said this isn't LeBrons fault.  SA is exposing the rest of the team for what it is.  There's no way a single player can beat these guys right now.

This whole idea that Lebron has to do it by himself and the Heat are old is total BS.

The Heat cruise controlled through the regular season, did well against the west, cruised through the east, but now all of a sudden are too old.

No, the Spurs are a better team, plain and simple.  They were the better team last year too, just choked it up in game 6.

Agree.  Miami was fragile all year.  Early in the season they were winning games by 'turning it on' late in games.  It was working then but I saw warning signs.

The Spurs meanwhile took a while to get humming, but by the time they played the Heat at home in February they completely wrecked them.

I'm curious how the OKC series would have gone had Ibaka played the whole series, but it appeared as if the Spurs figured things out (play a stretch 4 to draw him out).  They still provide the hardest match for the Spurs.

Meanwhile SAS is exposing Miami the way they did the Lakers back in '03, when they just demolished them.  This was after the Lakers had a great run - but their players were aging and the fire was diminishing while the Spurs were building with frustration.  Lakers went and got Payton and Malone because of that series (then got killed by the Pistons in the Finals).

What the Spurs are doing right now and throughout the playoffs is tremendous.
