No, but some kids in a famine-stricken region of Nofoodistan will really appreciate the donation of those shirts.

I care and would like to see the US win, but realistically, the #1 ranked team and the #3 ranked team in the world are in our group. The beatable team? The one that's recently beaten the US in the World Cup.

It isnt about whether we win or lose.  Nobody who is a true soccer fan cares about that. Its about enjoying the beautiful game. Or about being avant garde in a sassy ironic way for many US fans

I was going off this:  http://www.fifa.com/worldranking/rankingtable/, looks like they updated it since the last time I looked, now the rankings show Germany as #2 and Portugal as #4. My point still stands, though

Official FIFA rankings are 2 and 4.  Rate them however you want, if the US makes it out of pool play, I'll call this World Cup a major success.  I don't know how FIFA selects the pools, I can only assume it's completely random.  I can't see any other way that Germany, Portugal, and USA would be put in the same pool.

2014-06-12 09:48:06 AM

mainstreet62: Well, THAT makes a HUGE difference.

It's a pretty significant difference.

If you look at the betting odds, the #1 team is 11/4 and the #3 team is 6/1.  So the odds makers are saying that Brazil is 2x's more likely than Germany to win.

Then the difference between #3/4 Germany and #6/7 spain is 6/1 vs 22/1, which again is pretty significant.

But in reality, the issue isn't that the US is in a tough group, it's that they aren't very good.  Almost any group is a group of death to them, because they're between a low 3rd tier team.

Ghana actually has better odds of winning than the US, so the gambling community things the US is worst in the group.

It was based on the rankings in October 2013. Portugal were considerably lower then.

Sure.

I mean, let's face it. If the United States is supposed to become one of the elite teams in the world, the best way to do that is to face a trial by fire that is this year's group stage.

I think they can get 4 points. Maybe 6 if they are incredibly lucky against Portugal (it has happened before).

But I'm counting on 3 points off Ghana, and they eliminated the US last time.

It's an incredibly difficult group. I'm glad it is. If the US gets through the group stage, that's major progress.

That's what I'm saying.

In 2002 we:

Beat Portugal 3-2
Tied South Korea 1-1
Lost to Poland 3-1

Passed the group stage and made the round of 16, where we:

Beat Mexico 2-0 in the Round of 16 (that day was super fun, I worked around a sea of Mexicans at the time right out of college, they were very displeased and sad).

Lost to Germany 1-0 in the Quarterfinal, who eventually went on to lose to Brazil in the Final

So yes, anything can happen. Who knows what would have happened in 2002 if the score of the Germany game got flipped around? We would have had another shot at South Korea in the semi final.

If we were serious about winning we'd put soccer fields in the inner city so those kids could learn the game. Then we'd be unstoppable like in most every other sport. Plus African Americans could introduce some style to the game so it gets away from scarves and holding hands with little kids.

Why am I not surprised that a guy who subscribes to the theory that African Americans are just genetically superior athletes has apparently not been in an inner city in the last 10 years?

2014-06-12 10:14:17 AM
The USMNT is better now than it has ever been.  We even have a HUGE advantage over our opponents in that the time zone change won't screw us up (it will for everyone else in the group...it always does).  Add to that the fact that 2 or 3 contenders flame out spectacularly in every World Cup, and if history is any guide, it will be European teams this time.  Germany and Portugal are among the best, but no reason why one or both of them can't turn into a bucket of fail for 3 games.

We absolutely can make it out of the group, and my God that would be awesome.

We can also play the 3 best World Cup games we've ever played and still go home.  That wouldn't be a failure by any stretch.  I'm just happy that we're finally legitimately respected.

I'd count on zero points there, and hope that we might get one? Possibly three, but unlikely.

Keep in mind that, say, Portugal can flame out entirely, and it's still more likely than not that the USA won't advance. We'd have to beat Ghana.

Um African Americans are genetically superior athletes when it comes to certain skills.

Do you think it is a coincidence that almost all world class sprinters are black? That almost all wide receivers and defensive backs are black? That the all-time stolen base leaders (who played with black players) are black?

I think we'll beat Ghana.  We're a LOT better than 4 years ago, and they are a little worse.  And frankly, playing Germany last is another huge advantage.  By the time we play Germany, they'll likely have 6 points, won't play anyone who has a yellow card already, and may not play as hard as usual.  We could absolutely get a result in that case.

Here's how the USA gets it done.

Beat Ghana for 3 points.
Portugal game is irrelevant but if Ronaldo is hurt or gets reinjured, that's 1-3 points for the good guys.

Germany, having taken 6 points already, parks the bus and they draw 0-0.

5-7 points and good enough for the knockout stages.

2014-06-12 10:34:56 AM
I think he's A:playing with the team psychologically and B: stating a fact. He may be saying this just to create a dialogue among the player to come together and be a little defiant. Kind of like leaving Donovan off the roster. Instead of 22 guys thinking "we've got Landon, we'll be ok" now he has 23 guys thinking "Shiat! No Landon, I'd better bring my game up a couple more notches."

Plus if we do manage to get out of the group stage, I don't think anyone will be more optimistic than Klinsman.

Pretty much.  Monday is going to be crazy.  Klinsy is right, it basically is like a World Cup Final for us.  Win and we're actually in pretty good shape.  Draw or lose and we're pretty well hosed.

Yeah, but if you mix genetics with money and training in a top country, you'll get better athletes.

Could you imagine Lebron James as a target forward or somebody like Allen Iverson dribbling towards you? But they played basketball instead of soccer.

How is it racist? We're the best in the world at every sport black people like. In fact, the only sports we don't dominate are ones where there isn't the requisite fields or equipment located in our cities. Baseball, golf, skiing, hockey, sailing, etc...  Sorry if pointing out the obvious is racist to you. I wouldn't say that.

The United States had some amazing chances to score in that game, but didn't. The German goalie was in a perfect location at least twice on some great US chances to score..

Germany also hit the right post on a shot, if I remember correctly.

I thought it was an extremely competitive, well played game by the US and Germany back then. It really could have gone either way.
